The Media as a Theme in the Arts Across the History of the Czech Media

Like newspapers, books, cinema or music, fine art is a medium of human communication, and the carrier of a message. Its role as a specific means of communication has transformed throughout history, along with the role of mass media. Before the rise of mass communications across all of society, this function was to some degree facilitated by works of art. A work of art is itself a medium of communication, while at the same time it can also represent other media - in various stages of the evolution of arts and culture the mass media themselves became the subject of art. This can be defined as the meta-communication of one medium with another. The present dissertation focuses on the research and work of Czech artists engaged with visualizing the means of mass-media communication (periodicals, radio, television) and its actors (the recipients and producers of media content). The relevant works of art for this thesis (paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures) are the focus of a qualitative analysis resulting in an overview of the evolution of this subject matter since the advent of mass media, i.e., from the emergence of the first printed periodicals to the 1960s. Difference between czech media's relation to Africa and the rest of the world on the example of formation of independent Kosovo and South Sudan

The bachelor thesis "Difference between Czech media's relation to Africa and the rest of the world on the example of formation of independent Kosovo and South Sudan is analysing the approach of four major broadsheets to Africa. The thesis is using a quantitative content analysis in order to describe characteristics of the international news in the chosen broadsheets during two different months. The recived data will be then confirmed by analysing a specific case of independent Kosovo and South Sudan. In the first half, the thesis is focusing on a brief description of recent history of both states which will be analysed later on. The historical background will help to understand the situation in both countries which as in information that will be used to analyse the articles in the observed period. In the theoretical part, some concepts of media theory are presented as well as they are used throughout the thesis. In the second half, the methodology is presented in order to detrmine a plan which will be followed during the analysis. In this chapter, the hypothesis is clearly described. Kraus Magazine in Terms of the Political Economy of Communication: A Critical Analysis of a Year of Existence of the New Concept in the Czech Media Market

This diploma thesis researches the Czech printed magazine Kraus which was launched in November 2011 and ended in July 2012. The magazine was unique due to its media format of so called personality magazine. Kraus magazine was the first personality magazine in the Czech republic and no such other has been released since then. The thesis tracks and analyzes the existence of the magazine in Czech media market, while following the perspective of the critical political economy of communication. In order to put the Kraus magazine into a broader context of the political economy of communication, one part of the thesis is focused on foreign personality magazines such as Dutch Linda or American O, The Oprah Magazine. The successful Dutch Linda magazine was explicitly a pattern for Kraus, being published by the same media production company Sanoma Magazines. Another part of the thesis characterizes the public media image of Jan Kraus, a well-known Czech TV host, whose name and face the first Czech personality magazine bare. Marketing strategy, influences of the media management and ownership, advertising, internationalization, concepts such as commodification and structuration and more are the main interests of critical political economy and the key areas of this study too. Transformation of the st. Wenceslas symbol and cult in Czech press around the breaking points of the Czech 20th century history

The thesis deal with transformations of st. Wenceslas symbol and his cult in the Czech press around breaking points of Czech 20th century history. It asks about impact of contemporary policy and incidents on presentation of st. Wenceslas symbol, then about parts of st. Wenceslas cult and finally about connection of this symbol with other national symbols. The thesis is based on the assumtion that national identity is constructed through collective memory of members of the nation, appropriate symbology and history interpretation. Research uses qualitative metods (discourse analysis). Sample is made of Czech (mostly) statewide press articles that are related to st. Wenceslas and his cult, from the period around the st. Wenceslas day (28th September), in several years intervals around appointed breaking points (1918, 1938, 1939, 1945, 1948, 1968 and 1989). It has been found that 1. st. Wenceslas symbol represents unchanging connection of the church and the nation in the case of Catholic perspective, 2. in danger it mobilizes and symbolizes the statehood and the strength of the nation in case of the nationalistic use and 3. it can support legitimity of new established regime. Bachelor thesis "The Media Image of the Centre Against Expulsions in Polish and Czech Daily Newspapers in the Years 2003 and 2004" deals with a comparison of four Polish and Czech daily newspapers and their approach to the subject of the Centre Against Expulsion which is an institution initiated by the German Federation of Expellees. In the first part the thesis treats the circumstances leading to the creation of a foundation which is supposed to promote the idea of the Centre and describes the debate that was started about this issue. The merits of the thesis are based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the dailies Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Wyborcza, Právo and Mladá fronta DNES. By this analysis the thesis monitors how much space the newspapers devoted to the topic, to which opinions they gave a chance to be heard and what was their attitude to the question. It also deals with the chosen lexis and other categories that can show the approach to the issue. On this basis the thesis compares the Polish and Czech newspapers. The Diploma thesis "Thomas G. Masaryk's journalistic activity" aims to analyze Masaryk as a journalist. The thesis describes the process of Masaryk's evolution from childhood and school years through his university studies in Vienna and Leipzig till his move to Prague, where he worked at the local university. It emphasizes all the major aspects that formed his personali-ty. It focuses mainly on his position in the magazines Athenaeum, Čas and Naše doba, which then influenced many events. The issue is settled in the historical and cultural social context of the second half of the 19th century.

Image media in the Czech prose between 1989 and 2009 aims to describe methods of recording media in artistic literature. The aim of our study is to analyze different points of view while viewing the media. Thesis is directly linked to the knowledge of the subjects Media and Culture. The theoretical part deals with the literature development and media in the time identified by us. We are aslo noticing the journalist role in our society and their self-appraisal. In the analytical part we divide individual books into chapters. Our criteria for their creation is the role which the media have, and discribed methods - for example satire. Within detailed analyzing of the books, we came out from literary theory, especially we use knowledge of narratology. We also lean on information from the media development scene and research focusing on journalists and their position in society. Our thesis is the first work on this topic. We therefore give a basic overview of the captured media. As a second dominant theme during the work, we chose a subject of reporters description. Our work brings the knowledge of the evaluation of their work and their self-esteem, most authors in our text are journalists.
