Online harassment among male and female journalists in Nepal and its impact on their work
Manandhar, Akriti ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
Online harassment of journalists is a growing concern worldwide as more journalists report burnouts, fatigue and desire to quit journalism. This research was based on in-depth interviews of five male and five female Nepali journalists. It aimed at investigating the forms of online harassment journalists face in Nepal, the impacts it has on them and the strategies they employ to deal with it. It was of research interest to examine differences in harassment experiences of male and female journalists. Results showed the common forms of harassment journalists face are cyberstalking, sexual harassment, gendered harassment, manipulation and intimidation. Due to this, journalists decreased social media usage and self-censored themselves on it. It led to fears of physical harm, judgement and being discredited. Most interviewed journalists ignored it considering it a part of their job. Complaining about harassment bore no positive results. Women from the sample faced comparatively more sexual and gendered harassment, with harassment being more personal and of higher intensity. This had adverse impacts on some female interviewees leading them to quit social media and the profession altogether, which further increases gender gap in the heavily male-dominated industry. Younger and less experienced journalists...
Media and its impact on secondary victimization and victim blaming of the victims of sexual violence and harassment
Folprechtová, Josefína ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the news media and the way they cover the acts of sexual violence and harassment and its victims. The aim is to describe how Czech media contribute to the secondary victimization of the victims and to so-called victim blaming, which is an accusation that the victim is to blame for the act committed. The theoretical part explains the context and concepts related to crime victims, which are important for understanding the practical part. It defines sexual violence, explains the term victimization and the types of victimization, as well as the phenomenon of victim blaming and rape culture, whose existence is often supported by the news media. The thesis is also devoted to media framing and journalistic ethics regarding the coverage of crimes and crime victims. In the practical part, the thesis explores articles published from January to April 2022 in selected Czech online media - both serious and tabloid - in which the media refer to the victims of sexual violence and harassment. It observes how the media informed the public about the victims and how it contributed to the secondary victimization and victim blaming by using certain controversial words and phrases.

Sexual harassment of Czech university students in 2018 - comparison with 2008 research
Dvořáková, Dominika ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
The principal objective of my thesis was to find out what changes in sexual harassment of university students have occurred since 2008/2009 when the research project Sexual harassment at university: occurrence and perception was carried out. In the theoretical part I describe the term sexual harassment, specifics of the university environment and at the end of the theoretical part I show negative effects of sexual harassment and outline possible ways how to prevent it. In the methodological part I describe the research itself. I interviewed a total of 946 students using a questionnaire survey to find out what forms of sexual harassment students most often face, whether women perceive annoying behaviour more critically than men and whether they have more experience with it and also how students define sexual harassment. The analysis of the results showed that there were no major changes in the total share of students who experienced the sexual harassment by their teachers compared to the previous research. At the same time, some types of harassing behaviour have become more frequent (e.g. abusive behaviour due to being a man or a woman, ridiculing students' appearance). Keywords: sexual harassment, universities, education, gender stereotypes
The Battle for the Meaning of sexual Harassment: Analysis of Media Reactions to the Conference Legal Aspects of the "Me Too" Campaign
Pechačová, Alžběta ; Kobová, Ĺubica (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to find out how the frame of sexual harassment is created in the context of a discourse conflict brought about by the conference "Legal Aspects of ‛MeToo' Campaign", which took place in Prague in March 2018. My analytical sample consisted of four op- ed pieces of the protagonists of the conference and five op-ed pieces of the critics of the conference. I chose critical discourse analysis as my analytical tool to find out how each side of the discursive conflict constructs the discourse of sexual harassment. In my research I identified these discourses in the texts of the protagonists of the conference: Sexual harassment is just a sexual behaviour, Colonization of sexual harassment by legal discourse and Construction of the Subjects. In the articles of the critics of the conference I identified following discourses: Sexual harassment is an abuse of power, Construction of the expertise on sexual harassment. The protagonists of the conference co-created hermeneutical and testimonial injustice towards victims, while the conference critics co-created testimonial justice but neverthless contributed to furthering hermeneutical injustice towards victims.
Thomas versus Hill and Kavanaugh versus Ford: Shifts in the cases' media framing by the The New York Times
Abstract The way or ways the media captures individuals or events are referred as framing. This is a depiction of the situation for the public who accepts or rejects it. These are certain aspects of perceived reality and their emphasis. In this work, a content analysis of articles presented by one of the most famous American dailies - The New York Times - in the cases of appointing candidates...
Sexual harassment in the media on the example of the American television channel Fox News
Kytková, Barbara ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
The thesis Sexual Harassment in the Media on the Example of American Television Fox News aims to describe the sexual harassment affair in the American television company Fox News and compare it with similar cases in other American media organizations. The 2016 case led to the dismissal of Roger Ailes, the company's longtime director, and set off a wave of accusations of sexual harassment in other media, leading to the discrediting of several moderators and prominent figures in the American media. The main goal is to find out whether sexual harassment is a known, systemic phenomenon in America or not. Sexual harassment is also associated with the world-wide anti-sexual harassment movement Me Too, which emerged shortly after the Ailes scandal broke out. Therefore, I want to refute or confirm the hypothesis whether most cases of sexual harassment in the media began to appear only after Me Too became a world-famous movement. The main research method is a search of selected media, such as the New York Times, which has dealt extensively with the case. One of the main results should also be to find out whether harassment has always led to the release of the culprit and whether the victims have received apology or compensation from the media.

Šubrtová, Zuzana ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
This master thesis focuses on the issue of sexual harassment in the media sector from the female journalists' perspective. Our goal was to investigate the emotional experience of journalists who were victims of sexual harassment. The methodology of research was thematic analysis. We analysed testimonies from eight respondents who currently work or worked in journalism. Few interesting concepts arise from the analysis, such as role of the power asymmetry or sexual objectification of female journalists. In conclusion, we defined specific aspects of sexual harassment in described sector and impact on the journalists' work reality.
