Controversy about Šumava: Strengths and weaknesses of the ecological principle of consensus
Chomátová, Eliška ; Stöckelová, Tereza (advisor) ; Čermák, Daniel (referee)
The thesis is based on a qualitative research realized in summer 2008 in several municipalities in Šumava. Focus groups organized within this research aimed at the relationship of different stakeholders to the Šumava National Park and more generally to nature and environmentalist thoughts and actors. The research design and the data gathered are presented in the introduction. Then the theory of general principles of consensus is described, which serves as the main theoretical framework for the study of focus groups participants' arguments. Using particular arguments, I show that against the protection of nature as it is realized by Šumava National Park Authority, critical citizens build their arguments on values that are considered legitimate and important in Czech society. The next part of the thesis studies the ecological principle of consensus as a new general principle of consensus: I discuss the conditions for existence of such a principle, its form in the controversy about the management of Šumava and the implications its form can have, supporting broader acceptance of the principle or, on the contrary, its rejection. An important point there is the relationship between expertise and participation, which are, together with the concept of nature, main elements of the ecological principle of...
Railways in the news media
Dolejší, Milan ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The Railway in the News Media takes the railway topic as a specialized one of those the media deal with as a part of its general news.. The rail-news usually does not possess its own section - in contrast with some other specialized news topics, the railway news usually does not possess its own section. The railway topics occur in the economic, domestic or even the regional sections. Nevertheless, there are people specializing themselves in this topic in editorial staffs. Therefore, it is questionable whether the reservations about the quality of the rail-news are justified. This work attempts to research these processes. It deals with the professionalism of the rail-news processing. The work monitors impartiality of the news on the one hand and using of language and semiotics on the other hand. The basis of the work is a quantitative analysis of media contents dedicated to railway in selected printed media. The output is a summary of accuracy of reporting on operational, technical and historical facts about railway and of terminological correctness. It also examines the balance of railway subjects coverage in media. The research results in Czech news media making mistakes in specialized topic news. However. the mistakes are not too serious. Approximately one quarter of analyzed news contents were...
Advisory bodies and expertise in the Czech politics : epistemic communities and the influence on the reforms of higher education and pension system
Merklová, Kateřina ; Polášek, Martin (advisor) ; Vargovčíková, Jana (referee)
Advisory Bodies and Expertise in the Czech Politics - Epistemic Communities and the Influence on the Reforms of Higher Education and Pension System Master thesis Bc. Kateřina Merklová The Master thesis Advisory Bodies and Expertise in the Czech Politics - Epistemic Communities and the Influence on the Reforms of Higher Education and Pension System concerns with the relation between politics and expertise. So-called epistemic community represents the knowledge interpreter that we consider an independent actor in the political process. In the theoretical part of the text, we have explained the original definition of the concept as well as its critics and case studies that cover various contexts. Following most of the authors, we have applied a looser definition of the concept and deconstructed its rigid criteria. The empirical part of the thesis presents a case study (N=4) based on comparative methods that analyzes variable influence of four particular epistemic communities (the authors of the White Paper on Tertiary Education, Bezdek's Committee, Bezdek's Committee II, and the National Economic Council) on policy-making process and its sources. Regarding our intention and research questions, we have chosen two qualitative methods - in-depth interviews and content analysis of relevant texts. We have...
System analysis of braking truck - trailer combination
Haring, Andrej ; Kubjatko,, Tibor (referee) ; Řehák,, Miloslav (referee) ; Semela, Marek (advisor)
The dissertation deals with the issue of braking of articulated vehicles, especially articulated vehicles consisting of a tractor and a semi-trailer. This configuration was chosen with regard to the number of accidents and their consequences, and often also does not suit the technical condition of the tractor and semi-trailer, which is closely related to the safety of operation of these combinations. In the case of road accidents, the consequences are often very serious, whether it is personal injury or material damage. Investigating these accidents is a relatively demanding process, requiring a high degree of expertise as well as the necessary technical equipment. In contrast to these requirements, the availability of sources from which the necessary information can be drawn is relatively low. The available resources are mostly in a foreign language and are usually solutions to partial problems, not systemically comprehensive literature. Therefore, it is possible to say a "constant demand" for the available professional literature dealing with issues related to the solution of traffic accidents not only of combinations of vehicles, but of commercial vehicles as a whole. From the point of view of the importance, or topicality of needs arising from expert practice, the dissertation is thematically focused on braking of combinations of vehicles. There are several key reasons to focus on articulated vehicles. First of all, this is due to the specific character of the vehicle itself, which consists of two communication-linked brake systems. Other reasons are that the information contained in the dissertation, whether it is descriptive information, assessment of the technical condition of the systems, or the measurement results themselves, can be partially or even fully used for stand-alone towing vehicles or trailers. However, not all problems related to this issue can be solved within the dissertation. Therefore, in the dissertation, significant influences are selected, the solution of which, given the frequency and severity, the author considers essential. From the title of the dissertation it follows that this is a system analysis of the braking of combinations of vehicles. The system concept of solving a problem situation and selected problems are a guarantee that really essential parameters are selected within the content possibilities and scope of the dissertation and the system approach to their solution allows a "general" application in solving similar problems. The aim of the dissertation is a system analysis of the influence of selected parameters on the overall braking effect and stability of commercial vehicle combinations, analysis of input parameters on the decision logic of electronic brake system control unit, where procedures but also conclusions can be applied in similar cases with similar input parameters and decision criteria. Another partial goal is to develop a framework methodology for determining the technical condition of individual components of brake systems of commercial vehicles, which will be possible to apply especially in trucks, where electronically controlled systems are installed. Here, too, a systemic concept is applied, which will enable a wider use of this methodology.
Gastronauts of Eastern Europe: Experiencing and Digesting Luxury Gastronomy in the Czech Republic
Hajdáková, Iveta ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee) ; Eyal, Gil (referee)
This dissertation is based on a research of luxury gastronomy conducted in two luxury restaurants in Prague. The main focus of analysis is on gastronomic experience as an affective commodity and a vehicle of social, economic and political transformation. The study examines how affect is produced, commodified and how value is generated in luxury "experiential gastronomy." It also analyzes the role of affect in transformation of individuals, the society, consumption practices, entrepreneurial practices, and labor. It shows how experts on gastronomy educate the public on appropriate consumption practices and eating habits. Eating and dining serve as "technologies of the self" (Rose 2004) through which individual and social health and well-being are achieved. Cultivated affect becomes a vehicle of the "purification from socialism" (Eyal 2003) and also plays an important part on the formation of ethical consumer and citizen (Muehlebach 2011). The fact-finding process in civil proceedings by expert opinion
Ševčík, Petr ; Frintová, Dita (referee)
The dissertation deals with the problem of proving by expert opinion in civil court proceedings. The scientific goal of the thesis is to present a legal analysis of expert evidence in civil court proceedings and inherently related problematic theoretical and application aspects, which relate in different ways both to the persons of the parties and to the experts, and last but not least to the court as an instance a unit which decides the dispute between the parties with the help of an expert opinion. The main working hypothesis of the dissertation thesis is the fact that the valid legal regulation of expert evidence in civil court proceedings is in many respects obsolete and inadequate conditions, which in turn brings to the practice a number of problematic moments, some of which are liable to endanger and the overall interest in a fair decision on the matter itself. The task of a historic passage was primarily to define the questions that continually reappeared over time and whose resolution authors and legal practice approached in different ways at different times. One typical example is the institute of the expert witness, in that this institute was first embedded in the rules of civil procedure of Austro-Hungary, was abandoned under socialist law and has been resuscitated in connection with...
