Analysis of Czech television news before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021
Slancová, Markéta ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Karel, Kryštof (referee)
This thesis examines compliance with the normative requirements imposed on Czech television broadcasters by Act No. 231/2001 Coll. on the Operation of Radio and Television Broadcasting and on Amendments to Other Acts. It focuses on the requirement of objectivity and its compliance in the period before the parliamentary elections. In particular, it focuses on the postulate of impartiality as part of the scheme of objectivity as defined by Jörgen Westerstahl in 1983. The sub-objectives of the thesis were to find out how much attention was given to individual candidates by the TV stations examined in this study, whether the journalists' speeches separated facts (news information) from opinions (commentaries) and, finally, whether the journalists' speeches did not contain explicit evaluations. For this purpose, a quantitative content analysis of six episodes of the main news broadcasts broadcasted during the three-week period before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic held in the autumn of 2021 was used. Specifically, I selected three episodes of Události broadcast by Czech Television and three episodes of Hlavní zprávy CNN Prima NEWS. It was found that Czech Television did not give any space in the examined pre-election coverage to the candidates standing...
Graphic elements in news programs of Czech television channels
Novotný, Jan ; Podzimek, Jan (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the form of graphic elements in the main news programs of the most-watched Czech stations. Using visual analysis tools, it explores how digitally generated headlines, bars, jingles, infographics, and other elements contribute to the effective communication of daily news. It also aims to find out how much the appearance of tv graphics differs between the programs. The semiotic analysis, which combines the approach of multimodal social semiotics and the concept of distinctive features, reveals that Czech television stations often use the same visual communication tools, therefore the graphic processing of elements in individual programs is remarkably similar in some regards. On the other hand, in connection with the recent visual rebranding of some of the programs, there are also frequent attempts of the programs to differentiate themselves and to avoid clichés in the appearance of the news. Because of that, discussion outlines the potential advantages and disadvantages of both of these approaches.
The motivation of participatory journalists in czech TV news programme
Šedivá, Tereza ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The following Master's thesis is focused on participatory journalism. Participatory journalism has become an interesting and important part of media production since the invention of Web 2.0. In recent years, the concept of listeners and viewers creating professional news has been used by radio, television and online media all over the world, including Czech television and its ČT24 news programme. Czech TV launched a project called iReportér in 2015. People can send photos or videos of what is happening around them through a mobile application or a website. These materials, checked by editors, may be later used in a broadcast, on the website or on Czech TV social media profiles. The theoretical part of the thesis will explain main concepts necessary for understanding how participatory journalism works. For example, what is convergence, who are the produsers, what is Web 1.0., 2.0. and 3.0. It will describe what the advantages of participatory journalism are and how it is different from citizen journalism. One section will focus on ethics and another on examples of participatory journalism projects abroad and in the Czech Republic. In the practical part, the author will present applied research methods. After that, the author will evaluate data from the questionnaire survey and from in-depth...
Theory vs. practicality - current state of television reportage on the ČT24 and CNN Prima NEWS channels with focus on the parlament election of 2021
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The goal of this magister thesis is to find out how much the current appearance of the genre of the "television news reportage" corresponds with theory. It also compares how much, if at all, it differentiates between the two main Czech news television channels - ČT24 and CNN Prima NEWS. The theoretical part describes the historical development of the genre, its current form according to theories and the "ideal" work methods of reporters. The practical part does not follow these problematics by the traditional way of content analysis, however - it instead tries to approach it "from the inside", through the optics of active journalists. Using grounded theory, it examines a sample comprising of six journalists, three from each media outlet. The target is to find out whether their view of the "reportage" genre corresponds with theory and whether or not they know about eventual connections. Using questions like "what makes a good 'reportage' in your opinion" or "what does your usual workday look like", it does not only confront theory with reality. It also compares the two media outlets in between one another. It mostly focuses on the experiences of chosen reporters during the parliamentary election of 2021.

Media Image of Compulsory High School Diploma in Mathematics in Chosen Media
Kalášková, Jana ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Odstrčilová, Klára (referee)
The compulsory mathematics matriculation is a long-standing topic of discussion among the professional and lay population. The amendment to the Education Act, mandating compulsory mathematics graduation for all secondary school students, was first introduced by former Education Minister Marcel Chládek. For the first time, the matriculation exam was to be compulsory for students taking their matriculation exam in the 2020/2021 school year. Now students can choose between a foreign language and mathematics. The topic of this thesis is the issue of the compulsory mathematics matriculation exam and its media portrayal, in my case in the news coverage of Nova television and Czech Television, where I will examine the coverage of the topic in the main evening news of both media. The aim of my thesis is to find out how the examined media portrayed the issue in the period from June 2013 to June 2020, how many reports were devoted to the topic, how long they were, which people are associated with the topic and which parties expressed their views on the topic.
The Potential of Latent Class Analysis: the Czech Television Audience Case Study
Pospíšilová, Petra ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee)
The thesis "The Potential of Latent Class Analysis: the Czech Television Audience Case Study" deals with latent class analysis and it's potential as a segmentation method. Three different approaches are examined - latent class analysis for joint data from six research waves, simultaneous latent class analysis for each wave separately and latent class analysis for joint data transferred into dichotomous form. The results of all three methods are compared through secondary analysis of data from case study focused on audience's perception of the Czech Television; their strong and weak points are described and the most suitable solution is chosen. Based on these findings, four identified segments of the audience are then interpreted from the point of their characteristic features and sociodemographic parameters. This paper is supported by works of classic authors in the area of latent class analysis; the thesis refers to their findings that also served as basis for composition of the research hypotheses.
