Notions of Sexuality and Gender Identity in the Marvel Company Production
HORVÁTH, Roman
The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of forms of sexuality and gender identity in the production of the Marvel company and focuses on comics. It examines the representation of sexuality and gender identity in comics. The stereotyping of the depiction of female heroines is also analysed and focuses on the representation of masculinity, femininity and queer signs. At the same time, it seeks to analyse gender stereotypes in the construction of female heroines using the psychoanalytic concept of male gaze. The development of these topics is also interspersed with socio-cultural context. The aim is also to view and analyse the possible impact of emancipation movements and historical events to comic book creation. The work can be split into two parts, of which the first theoretical part contains chapters focusing on the theory of comics from the comic book theorist Scott McCloud. It also focuses on the formal elements of comics supplemented by the theory of Martin Foret. The following parts are devoted to the methodology of comics, based on the theory of Michal Uhl. In the following chapters, there are topics such as the corporeality of the heroes and their representations, the history of Marvel and issues of gender, identity and sexuality. The next part is already devoted to the analysis of comics, which by its nature is rather a compilation of partial texts. The analytical texts focus on Captain America, Black Widow, X-Men and Mutants in the overall context and a group of Young Avengers heroes, which explore themes such as the interconnectedness of propaganda and embodiment, feminism and emancipation of female heroines, queer themes as a metaphor for mutantism and stereotypical representation of gay heroes.

This master thesis provides an analysis of theoretical concepts regarding LGBTQ* adolescents, gender socialisation and institutional education. I followed three main research questions: It attempts to find answers to the following research questions: 1) How do people who are working at school counselling centres perceive questioning youth or LGBTQ* adolescents? 2) Which tools of prevention do the schools have in the areas of sexual and gender identity based discrimination or bulling and which ones do they actually use? 3) What does the systemic support of schools in the field of homophobia and transphobia prevention look like? Semi-structured interviews conducted with school counsellor and school psychologists have been chosen as a main research method. The selection of communication partners is limited to Prague and the surrounding area and includes both public and private schools. The bachelor thesis deals with a co-occurrence of trans identity and autism, which has been a subject of academic interest in recent years. Its aim was to find out how these people relate to their dual diagnosis, what are their experiences with professionals, and whether they relate to autistic or trans communities. The theoretical part addresses three areas. The first part introduces the basic concepts related to trans issues and the process of transition in Czechia that most trans people go through. It also mentions the sources of stress that have psychological impacts on these people. The second section defines autism, introduces the concept of neurodiversity and briefly mentions gender differences in autism. The third part then describes the findings on the co-occurrence of autism and trans identity, the theories in consideration and the recommendations of the clinical guideline. The empirical part describes the conducted qualitative research. Two online interviews, one unstructured and one structured, were done with each of the three respondents. Záveská, Dominika ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Hejlová, Denisa (referee)
Diploma thesis 'The Perception of News Values among Female Journalists and Female Public Relations Workers' is concerned with the relationship between gender and news values. It compiles theoretical basis for the analysis. Using qualitative and quantitative methods aims to examine the perception of news values and the process of news selection among female journalists and public relations workers. It reveals, whether there are some differences between these two groups, what kind of differences it is, and what the reasons that underlie them are. Some researchers assume that there are differences in the personal value system of these women - female news workers are considered to have a more masculine perspective and qualities tied mostly with men (maybe as a result of professional socialization, or as personal characteristics). The first part of research contains of a questionnaire survey, which examines some demographic and professional characteristics, as well as the evaluation of news values and topics. The quantitative analysis of its results indicates some mild differences in characteristics and in the evaluation as well. Some differences could be understood as approval to the above mentioned assumption. Other could be linked to different nature of both professions. Another finding is that...
Psychological aspects of the transformation of gender role of transgenders in Czech context
Čechová, Helena ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Hrubý, Radovan (referee)
The thesis presents the processes of gender role transition and sex reassignment from the perspectives of psychology, medicine, and sociology. Its main focus is on the various aspects influencing the psyche of a person undertaking transition. The thesis investigates why trans identity is commonly viewed as a pathology and the impact of pathologization on the self-perception of trans people. Furthemore, the traditional outline of the transition process in Czech sexology is compared to some current international approaches. A section of the text addresses psychotherapy as a key factor in transition. A significant component of the thesis is that it takes a sociocultural viewpoint on gender identity and gender roles. One of the goals is to understand how medical experts dealing with trans identity conceptualize transition and how trans people themselves conceptualize it. The overall aim is to investigate how both of these sides influence each other and what psychological aspects enter the processes of gender role transition and sex reassignment. Key words: transsexuality, transgender, sex reassignment, gender identity, gender role.
Analysis of Gender Unconventional Characters in Japanese Anime and Manga
Pleskačová, Valérie ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Oravcová, Anna (referee)
In this thesis, I analyse gender unconventional characters of Japanese manga and anime. The topic is based on my long-lasting interest in this type of pop culture. Manga and anime, on which I build my research, were written in late 90' by Masashi Kishimoto and become the most popular manga of millennium. I use qualitative method through analysing documents, which are written parts of manga and video records of series Naruto/Naruto Shippuuden. I choose fifteen characters based on their gender roles and identities from these series. Next, I analyse every single character by constructing system of categories, based on which I connect categories to attributes of masculinity and femininity. To anchor my research, I use thesis and works, which are focused on gender in manga and anime and gender stereotypes applied in west cultures, which are written for example by Ann Oakley, Sandra Bem or Deborah Cameron. Object of research is to find out, if there are any regularities in making gender of each character, or if it is just a chaos, which has no measurable background. The conclusion of the thesis will be devoted to the limits of work and to future research of manga and anime.
