František Gellner. Text - Image - Context
Kořínková, Lucie ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee)
The Ph.D. thesis deals with the Czech author František Gellner. It deliberately endeavours not to exclude any of the segments of his both literary and visual work out of consideration, but to present them all in their heterogeneity, yet in mutual connections. Works of Gellner's art are therefore interpreted in novel ways, especially in consideration of the contexts of the period from which they origin (and above others those contexts that have become obscure and forgotten in the nearly hundred years since the original publication of Gellner's work). The first chapter summarizes the previous critical reception of Gellner's work and at the same time deals with this author's image in the Czech cultural milieu. Analysing some of Gellner's manuscripts, the second chapter aims to describe the specific type of the author's creativity. The third chapter is devoted to the problem of ambiguously constructed national identity of František Gellner and to the impact it had on the ways he dealt with the themes of Jewishness and anti-Semitism. The fourth chapter describes the various relations between Gellner's works and the periodicals these were prepared for. The next chapter is dedicated solely to Lidové noviny, as this was the newspaper periodical with which Gellner co-operated most intensely; the detailed...
Film as a Medium of Cultural Memory: Cinematic Representations of the Post - War Expulsion of Germans and its Changes
Řehořová, Irena ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee) ; Klimeš, Ivan (referee)
As a result of the development of visual media and the related tendency in social sciences described as "pictorial turn", many disciplines have incorporated in the field of their research also the study of phenomena that used to stay out of their attention. In sociology, this tendency resulted in the emergence of a new sub-discipline, referred to as sociology of the image or visual sociology. The subject of this dissertation falls within this sub-field: the attention is focused on movies, which today stand as a powerful media of cultural memory. The main goal of this project is to describe the specific practices of cultural remembering following from the nature of the film medium, and to explore the significance of the film as a source of sociological cognition. In the first part, film is recognized as a cultural/social phenomenon, which shouldn't be understood only as a product of individual authors, as there are many institutions and other subjects (which together form a cinematographic field) who also contribute to the making of a film by defining its possibilities and thus influence the way how particular events are represented. The second part of the work presents different theoretical approaches that map the nature of relation between film representation and reality - they describe the...

Heroldová, Karolína ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Mikulová, Soňa (referee)
The thesis follows up the subject of Jews and Shoah in Czechoslovakia and Austria and their representation at the beginning of the 60s. By this time, the Eichmann-trial took place in Jerusalem. Finding out, how and how much did the trial influence the presentation of Jews and Jewish victims in cultural memories or rather policy of past of both societies in comparison is aim of the thesis. On this basis, it is possible to reveal both differences and similarities between the two societies. Even if they seem to be completely different because of being sepparated by the Iron Curtain. The thesis devides into two parts. First part deals with the situation in post-war Czechoslovakia and Austria till the beginning of the 60s. It shows, how were the societies "set" when the Eichmann-trial came - what were the "prejudices", what was the policy of past dealing with. Second part includes the analysis of press-articles taken from different Austrian and Czechoslovakian newspaper and magazines (daily, weekly and monthly). From general to concrete is the way of the analysis which enables to show as the wider frame of the reaction as answers to the concrete questions. Outcomes are evaluated as continuously, as in the final conclusion.
Gaelic Athletic Association and Irish Football Association in the cultural memory of the citizens of Northern Ireland
Razím, Tomáš ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and the Irish Football Association (IFA) were founded in the 1880s and throughout the history have become more than mere sport organizations. Mainly because of the violent history of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, both associations became entrenched in the respective cultural memories of the two competing identities of Northern Ireland. The large-scale violence ended in 1998 with the signing of the Belfast Agreement that was meant to bring peace and inter-communal cooperation to the region. This paper analyses the development of the two associations after 1998 in the context of the theory of cultural memory created by Jan Assmann. It concludes that the IFA has changed profoundly since the end of the Troubles. It left its post in the unionist-protestant cultural identity and now represents part of the new Northern Irish identity which transcends the social division and is still in an early stage of development. The GAA, on the other hand, went the other way and decided to strengthen its position among nationalists and Catholics in spite of its anti-sectarian and anti-racist ethos and gestures. This difference stems mainly from different history and structure of both associations and the fear of the GAA of becoming marginalized by the British sports if it...

Krčmářová, Jana ; Bittnerová, Dana (advisor) ; Horský, Jan (referee) ; Beneš, Jaromír (referee)

Abstract: Corresponding with the tradition of current ecological and historical anthropology the study concentrated on reconstruction of transformation of one of the key complex human ecological relationships - modernization of agriculture. The process of agriculture modernization was enlightened with analysis of its local progression in the Czech Republic and in the light of mechanisms of cultural memory.. The establishment of modern industrial agriculture was described as forgetting of contemporary used agricultural knowledge during the application of new ideal agriculture form on the contemporary agricultural ecosystem. The new form was derived from the principles of modern economy, sciences and the availability of new technologies and was pushed forward by expert and economic elites and state. The form was applied on the biocultural system-landscape cultivated in majority of cases by thousand years present locals. The dialectical relationship between the new form, its application and the...

The Cultural Space and Memory in the Work of Viktor Fischl
Štychová, Michaela ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Špirit, Michael (referee)
The aim of this work is to show, how the collective, or rathert he cultural memory is realized in the work of Viktor Fischl in the term of the Holocaust, in which way is the traumatic experience objected in "remembering" in particular Fischl's books, how the characters deal with this experience. Theoretical framework is mainly based on Aleida and Jan Assmann's essays and studies and Maurice Halbwachs's important and inspiring book Collective memory. The main focus of this paper is based on its practical part in which the author tries to clarify and verify conceptions of cultural memory in literary texts. The emphasis is put on those post-war Fischl's proses which reflect the Holocaust exactly from the perspective of author's time, spatial and also empirical distance. This distance creates a very specific form of remembering and its narration. In the conclusion the findings are summed up and generalized. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Memorial sites. Topography of the present memory of the nation and its reflections
Čermáková, Barbora ; Devátá, Markéta
The methodology deals with a methodological capture of the phenomenon of memorial sites as basic elements of memory studies. It shows how rules (criteria applying to inclusion) are determined, as well as the importance of naming exceptions (assessment from the viewpoint of the whole complex of memorial places, correlation of memorial places). The methodology also elaborates the description and documentation of memorial places and presents techniques that can be employed to process collected data, which are a necessary prerequisite for a professional analysis and interpretation.
