Gaelská atletická asociace (GAA) a Irská fotbalová asociace (IFA) vznikly v 80. letech 19. století. Postupem času se staly více než pouze sportovními organizacemi, staly se významnými objekty v kulturních pamětech dvou antagonistických identit v Severním Irsku. K tomu přispělo především období násilného konfliktu mezi oběma komunitami, známé jako Troubles. To bylo ukončeno v roce 1998 podpisem Belfastské dohody, která měla obě komunity sblížit. Tato diplomová práce analyzuje vývoj obou asociací po roce 1998 v kontextu teorie kulturní paměti, jak ji vypracoval Jan Assmann. Shledává, že především IFA prošla mnoha významnými změnami a ztratila svou pozici v unionisticko-protestantské kulturní paměti. Místo toho však získala zcela nový status v rámci identity severoirské, která překlenuje dosud rozdělenou společnost a stále se vyvíjí, představuje nicméně nadějný potenciál do budoucna. GAA se oproti tomu rozhodla posílit svou pozici mezi katolíky a nacionalisty, a to navzdory několika gestům a aktivitám, které doprovázejí její protisektářský a protirasistický étos. Hlavním důvodem tohoto rozdílu je odlišná historie i struktura obou asociací, především pak obava GAA, že by mohla být marginalizována na úkor britských sportů, pokud by se vzdala své pevné pozice v kulturní paměti nacionalistů. Největší vliv... The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and the Irish Football Association (IFA) were founded in the 1880s and throughout the history have become more than mere sport organizations. Mainly because of the violent history of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, both associations became entrenched in the respective cultural memories of the two competing identities of Northern Ireland. The large-scale violence ended in 1998 with the signing of the Belfast Agreement that was meant to bring peace and inter-communal cooperation to the region. This paper analyses the development of the two associations after 1998 in the context of the theory of cultural memory created by Jan Assmann. It concludes that the IFA has changed profoundly since the end of the Troubles. It left its post in the unionist-protestant cultural identity and now represents part of the new Northern Irish identity which transcends the social division and is still in an early stage of development. The GAA, on the other hand, went the other way and decided to strengthen its position among nationalists and Catholics in spite of its anti-sectarian and anti-racist ethos and gestures.
