Meanings of the word populism and their changes in czech political debate 2013-2021
Staněk, Jan ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The thesis "The Meanings of the Word Populism and Their Transformations in the Czech Political Debate 2013-2021" deals with how the term populism and its derivatives were portrayed in the Czech media between 2013 and 2021, with a focus on the periods of political campaigns before the elections to the Czech Chamber of Deputies. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the main concepts addressed by contemporary academic research on this phenomenon are summarized, including the theory of populism as a thin ideology, political discourse, and socio-cultural phenomenon. Furthermore, the contemporary context of the examined period is presented, including the main political actors, the course of election campaigns, and the topics that appeared in the political and media debate during the investigated period. The methodological part introduces the research method used, which is Berelson's content quantitative analysis, and outlines its basic limitations. The practical part first presents the research itself and its parameters, including predetermined hypotheses and research questions it works with. Subsequently, the results are presented, confronted with the hypotheses, and an answer to the research question is sought. Among the main findings of the practical part of the thesis is the revelation of a...
Populist Trends in Republican Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches
Benson, Sophie ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Bibliographic note BENSON, Sophie Elisabeth. Populist Trends in Republican Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches. Mater thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Sociological Studies and Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism. Supervisor prof. Mgr. Anna Shavit, Ph.D. Abstract Populist rhetoric was quantified in all US Republican presidential nomination speeches between 1968 and 2020 utilizing Paul Taggat's model of Populism as an index to discern the viability of populist rhetoric as an effective campaign strategy in light of the shrinking core demographics of the Republican Party. The data found underscored the 2013 Growth and Opportunity Project conducted by the Republican National Convention (RNC) that the core demographics of the RNC were shrinking in electoral relevance and that the RNC was not persuasive with demographics that existed outside of their core constituency. This research showed that while populism is an everpresent phenomenon in RNC campaign rhetoric it is not sufficient in compensating for the depleting electoral strength that once guaranteed definitive electoral victories. Additionally, neither the degree of populism recorded in the speech nor in the audience response thereto correlates to the electoral outcomes. While populism is a powerful...
Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its European policy 1986-2007
Ježková, Simona ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
This master's thesis, titled Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its Approach to European Integration 1986-2007, analyses an era of twenty-plus years in which the party, led by Jörg Haider, underwent a major ideological shift. The FPÖ abandoned its original liberal pro-European position and, in the 1990s, became a Eurosceptic populist movement akin to the far right. This work aims to assess whether these shifts can be described using the theories formulated by Paul Taggart and Aleks Szczerbiak and by Nick Sitter - who postulate that a party's participation in government is among the factors influencing the degree to which it is Eurosceptic. They suggest that a party's rhetoric regarding the European Union tamps down if the party participates in the government, becoming a part of a coalition government or supporting a minority government. During the period examined in this thesis, the FPÖ was a part of three governing coalitions. It was also a period of significant events which enable us to analyse the FPÖ's conduct - in particular, the Austrian accession to the EC/EU, the adoption of treaties modifying the functioning of the EU, the Austrian presidencies of the Council of the EU in 1998 and 2006, the European Parliament elections and their representative's activities in the EP, the process of...
Mass protests in Romania and France: a comparison of contemporary anti-establishment movements
Boudová, Kristina ; Bauer, Paul (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Mass protests in Romania and France: a comparison of contemporary anti-establishment movements Author: Kristina Boudová Abstract This thesis examines the divergence and convergence of two populist social movements: The Yellow Vests in France and #rezist in Romania, both of which emerged in response to political and economic grievances. The movements converge in their critique of elites, corruption, and social inequality while defining said elites differently. Through a comparative analysis of the movements' origins, goals, strategies, and outcomes, this research identified similarities and differences between the two movements in terms of their populist features. The findings shed light on the complex nature of populism as a political phenomenon that can take different forms in different regions and contexts.
Populism as a threat to liberal democracy and the role of media
Němečková, Zuzana ; Agha, Petr (advisor) ; Urban, Michal (referee)
1 Populism as a threat to liberal democracy and the role of media Abstract This master's thesis focuses on concept of populism as an ideology. The first part of this thesis is concerned with the analysis of a hypothesis that views populism as a threat to liberal democracy and this hypothesis is then proven on various individual aspects of liberal democracy as is defined by Andrew Heywood. Next, this thesis is concerned with some critics of the concept of the liberal democracy itself such as Carl Schmitt or Chantal Mouffe. As shown on the example of an article by Belgian political scientist Chantal Mouffe it refutes the concept of left-wing populism as a ,,good" populism. Then, it concerns with some of the critical remarks of Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes that were outlined in their book The Light that Failed: A Reckoning. The next subchapter is concerned with some explanations as to why people are voting for populists - this includes the crisis of representation, then language used by populists and finally the desire to be recognized. The last three subchapters of first part concerns with three different countries as representatives of three different types of populism, more specifically it concerns with Hungary (right-wing populism), Spain (left-wing populism) and the Czech Republic (technocratic...
The Polish model of the populist party: a new perspective on the populist radical right
Greger, Vojtěch ; Kofroň, Jan (advisor) ; Guasti, Petra (referee)
The Polish model of the populist party: a new perspective on the populist radical right Master's thesis Bc. Vojtěch Greger Abstract The rise of the populist radical right (PRR), a group of parties critical of the established norms of Western liberal democracy, in the 2010s, manifesting itself in events such as Brexit or the illiberal takeover of Hungary, has been a subject of considerable attention both from academics and the general public, and has been viewed with great concern. Academic studies of the PRR have often elevated the nativist elements in such parties' rhetoric while paying considerably less attention to the economic appeals thereof. However, in recent years, literature highlighting the importance of economic deprivation in fomenting support for Eurosceptic and PRR movements has begun to appear. This thesis is predicated on this literature's argument that the electoral successes of the PRR are very often driven precisely by economic deprivation and the discontent stemming from it. To illustrate our argument, we examine the electoral support of the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party in the 2015 and 2019 elections using ordinary least squares regression (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR). Our findings show that structural economic factors, mainly the share of workers employed in...

In the theoretical part, the thesis will focus on digital communication as a "new tool of political communication" and define key concepts and theories related to digital and political communication and marketing. The starting point will be the works of political scientist Chytilek (2012 or 2019), who specializes in political marketing, and the works of Matušková (e.g., 2006), an expert on political and electoral marketing. In the practical part, the method of analysing rhetorical and visual means will be used to map the use of populism for political purposes in the pre-election period, the issue of "fake news," and strategies of populist rhetoric on...
