Reflections of holocaust in contemporary children's literature
Kupcová, Markéta ; Činátl, Kamil (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the reflections of holocaust in contemporary Czech literature for children as a set of representations of the Czech Holocaust memory adapted specifically for a child audience. In the first chapter the thesis presents its methodological background within the field of memory studies and literary science. In particular, Gil Eyal's concept of the will to memory, whose four dimensions - the command to remember, mnemonic substance, mnemonic operations, and the function of memory - inspired the selection of chapter contents. Drawing on interviews and the authors' websites, the second chapter presents the personalities, goals, and motivations of those who implement the command to remember. In addition to the author of each work, it also traces the work of the participating illustrator. It also identifies the two significant mechanisms that influence the width of the reception of the emerging representations of the Holocaust. The third chapter introduces, following Eyal's concept, the content of works on the Holocaust for children, which relates to the reality of the subject matter - historical personalities and events. In addition, it identifies some established motifs and themes in the corpus of works. The fourth chapter examines the methods of handling the previously...
Prague high school student's interest or lack of interest in political events in the Czech Republic
Libová, Gabriela ; Stracený, Josef (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
The main goal of the work was to find out what attitude students of high schools in Prague have towards political events in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part, I focused, among other things, on questionnaire surveys processed by the organization Jeden svět na školách and on the image of the young generation portrayed in the media. I suggested several options for making the classes of political science more attractive and better motivate students to be interested in the topic. In the practical part, I used the questionnaire method and compared the obtained data with my hypotheses. Other methods were analysis, and comparison of sources and obtained data.

Didactic treatment of the problems of contemporary democracy for teaching of social sciences
Záleský, František ; Dvořáková, Michaela (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
This master thesis deals with the issues of modern-day democracy and its didactic treatment of the way the school subject Social studies is taught at gymnázium schools. At first, the subject of democracy is discussed from many different angles, and those are compared to one another. Due to its didactic focus, the thesis partially uses school textbooks as a source. After that, great attention is given to four particular problems of the current democracy and a couple of different ways to view them. The discussed problems are inequality, education, populism, and epistemic disfiguration. Moreover, the thesis features an analysis of the approach to the subject in general education programs for gymnáziom schools. This analysis is followed up with another analysis, which deals with the treatment of the subject in the selected education programs at four different gymnázium schools, which are then compared to one another. In another subchapter, the thesis dissects the amount of attention that is paid to the problems of the current democracy in textbooks for secondary schools. These textbooks are then compared. It was discovered that general and school education programs lack a critical approach, definition of the problems, and their connection to the present day. The second part of the thesis includes...
Reflections on Complicity in the Holocaust in the Public Media Space: Reactions to the Lidice Case and the Polish Holocaust Law
Ryšánková, Marína ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
(in English) The aim of this master's thesis is to explore how the Holocaust is portrayed in various contexts and reflected in the public media. Specifically, the study examines the Czech and Polish perspectives on Holocaust involvement, societal perceptions, media coverage, and statements by politicians and historians. The research is based on one case study from each country. In 2018, Poland enacted a law to address the naming of concentration camps, asserting that Poles were not involved in the Holocaust. The Polish Holocaust law received global criticism. In 2019, the Lidice case emerged, involving a historian's claim that a Lidice woman reported her Jewish subtenant. This study compares reactions to both cases.
Education in Kolín Area during the Normalization Period
Procházka, Jakub ; Fapšo, Marek (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
The aim of the thesis will be to analyze the change in conditions at primary schools in Kolín during the normalization period. The research will focus mainly on the history of everyday life in several schools and common problems that the pedagogical environment at that time had to deal with. To accomplish the goal, it uses a range of historiographical, heuristic and methodological procedures. It will assign a smaller role to oral history methods such as interviews and questionnaires. It will be aware of the complications arising from the selectivity of respondents' answers. For this purpose, it will draw knowledge from the works of oral history experts Pavel Mücke and Miroslav Vaňek for interpretation. Other sources will include school chronicles, ONV Kolín Council files and articles from regional newspapers. At the end of the work, the appendices will present the statements of individual witnesses, to whom, however, anonymous names will be assigned to protect their privacy.

The liveliness of the St. Wenceslas myth: from the 1990s to the present
Nelibová, Johana ; Izdný, Jakub (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to capture the view of the person of Saint Wenceslas in the context of the 1990s and the first two decades of the new millennium. The author will focus on the statehood that Saint Wenceslas, as a symbol of the Czech state, represents and answer the questions of how the state treats the person of the saint in the public space and who Saint Wenceslas is for contemporary society according to the official state narrative. The author will look at Saint Wenceslas on three levels that are closely related to the state's influence, and which are of great importance for keeping the Saint Wenceslas myth alive and representing the official narrative recognized by the state. The first level is the view on the institutionalisation of Saint Wenceslas, i.e. the way he is thematised in anniversaries, in exhibitions or in the state representation itself. The second level is the popularisation of the Saint Wenceslas theme through the production of the public service media (Czech Television and Czech Radio), which were established by law and whose task is to develop the cultural identity of the people of the Czech Republic and to disseminate the democratic values declared by the state. The third level is the presentation of Saint Wenceslas in school education. Through her work, the author...
Presentism - the challenge of the school history teaching
Šormová, Julie ; Činátl, Kamil (advisor) ; Fapšo, Marek (referee)
(in English): The thesis deals with the issue of presentism, which is a current topic of academic debates at many levels. In the first part of the thesis the author sheds light on the complexity of the debate and introduces definitions of presentism. The topic is studied from a didactic perspective and it is examined at the level of practical manifestations in historical thinking. The research is based on the examination of school exercises and observation of the manifestations of presentism through new media, specifically TV series. The author asks whether (and in what forms) presentism manifests itself in TV series and whether (and in what forms) it manifests itself at the level of pupils' historical literacy. Furthermore, the thesis addresses the issue of the connection between the two levels of manifestations of presentism, and whether the influence of TV series on pupils' historical thinking can be identified. Methodologically, the thesis is inspired by contemporary didactic theory, especially the concepts of historical thinking, and also takes into account historiographical works that deal with the issue of time perception. The core of the thesis is represented by the second and third chapters, in which the author analyses the manifestations of presentism. The second chapter deals with the...
