Seniors and the issue of digital divide

Tato disertační práce se zabývá tématem digitální propasti, která je řešena z hlediska seniorů a práce s internetem. V dnešní době rozmachu technologií a jejich penetrace do všech sfér života je nezbytné, aby starší lidé nebyli digitálně vyloučeni a mohli plnohodnotně využívat všech výhod a zjednodušení, které internet a technologie přináší. Prostředkem k získání digitálních kompetencí je vzdělávání v oblasti informační gramotnosti, které může být poskytováno prostřednictvím sítě knihoven. Práce představuje celý teoretický rámec problematiky, nicméně hlavním přínosem je výzkumná a aplikační část. Výzkumy probíhaly v kvalitativní i kvantitativní rovině a přinesly odpovědi zejména na otázky, jakým způsobem dnes senioři internet využívají a o jaká témata jeví největší zájem z hlediska svého dalšího vzdělávání. Kvantitativního výzkumu se účastnilo více než 750 osob a na základě výsledků dotazníku bylo možné navrhnout metodickou příručku pro vzdělávací lekce. Příručka obsahuje návrh deseti lekcí s tématy, která jsou podložená získanými daty. Dvě z těchto lekcí byly otestovány v rámci evaluačního výzkumu. Příručka existuje ve formě e-knihy a je volně šířena mezi knihovny a další instituce.

Information behavior and learning in the context of new media: Digital games and simulations as complex systems for information representation

This dissertation considers digital games and simulations as complex systems of information representation and explores their specific aspects influencing the process of knowledge acquisition. It focuses on process of mental model creation, information behavior and situational emotional and cognitive engagement. The methodological approach is grounded in variety of disciplines including information science, educational science, new media studies and computer science. The main method used is educational experiment. The use of digital game-based and non-digital game-based educational intervention is compared to similar program based on traditional schooling methods and classic lectures. The experiment outcomes are divided into four large segments exploring influence of digital games on process of mental models creation, motivation for future information behavior, situational emotional experience and social interaction.

Development Tendencies of Information Science Education in world and in Czech Republic

This PhD thesis focuses on the development of Library and Information Science Education. The pivotal aim of the thesis is the identification of trends in education of information science worldwide and their comparison with trends in the Czech Republics. The thesis pays attention to the description of salient tendencies in general education as well as in the education of information science with particular consideration to USA and Europe. The concept of information ecology underlying the thesis presents a theoretical point of departure. The concept is used as an appropriate tool to structure benchmarking analysis of study programs. The concluding part deals with two analyses of Library and information science schools. Phenomenological Deep Interviews with Czech educators investigate perception of developmental tendencies emerging in curricula. Sense of Community in school settings surveys impact of social climate to student experience with received curricula.

Information Seeking in the Mobile Environment

Jindra Planková, Ph.D. Abstract The dissertation thesis deals with information seeking in mobile environment using smartphone. For this purpose, a qualitative research is conducted, devided into two consecutive research activities. In the first activity are used semistructured interviews to collect the data and the grounded theory is used for data analysis. In the second activity are used methods "thinking aloud" and practical information seeking based on model scenarios. Results of the second research activity are evaluated by thematic analysis and task analysis. The findings have broadenend and deepend the state of current knowledge concerning the information seeking in the mobile environment. We consider exploration of limiting factors that affect information seeking in mobile environment as one of the most beneficial result as well as discovery of two extreme styles of information seeking in mobile environment. Ontology of knowledge organization

The aim of the research documented in the thesis was to design an ontology for the knowledge organization domain. Three requirements specifying areas of ontology use have been identified: making of statements for a knowledge base for knowledge organization, indexing of resources in the domain and interlinking with content-relevant ontologies. The design was elaborated by the method of reengineering the first version of ontology, created in the framework of the NAKI research project Knowledge base for subject area of knowledge organization in 2013-2015. The second version of ontology is based on the DOLCE foundational ontology, specifically on the reusing of its selected classes and predicates, including the axioms associated with them. The reengineering of the content of the first version of ontology was done by the domain and facet analysis methodology. The outcome is divided in two interlinked modules - axiomatized heavy- weight core ontology and light-weight terminological ontology. The ontology offers a solution to the compatibility of Czech and world terminology, it applies an extended concept of domain beyond the scope of memory institutions, and it presents a partial contribution to the development of the theory of knowledge organization. Abstract This doctoral thesis investigates information science, public policy, and law, via established system theory, to uncover how information education, and particularly information literacy, can be better developed in the Czech Republic. The theoretical focus is on concepts of information literacy, information education, and information competencies. This is complemented with case studies, investigating existing policies through grounded theory. The novel contributions to knowledge arising from this research are: (1) a new three-wave staged model of the evolution of literacies; (2) a promising methodology for creating and implementing effective literacy policies respecting these three waves; (3) three specific proposals, grounded in constitutional rights and obligations, for overcoming the lack of political and public interest in further developing information literacy at a national level.
