Measuring the performance of academic libraries and the impact of the measuring on improving the quality of services Abstract The topic of the dissertation thesis is performance measurement in academic libraries. Measuring the performance of libraries is essential for their effective management, and it can also be used in the design and improvement of their processes and services. Statistics are the basis for measuring the performance of libraries. In the environment of university libraries, there was a need to revise the entire data collection process. The main goal of the dissertation was therefore to prepare a new annual report template for the Association of Libraries of Czech Universities, which would reflect the current needs of university libraries, and to propose a system of statistics for the collection of statistical data, which would take place in an online environment. A partial goal was to prepare a code of conduct for the system. The work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, the issue of measuring library performance and its use in practice is presented, and existing quality standards and various research methods used to monitor library performance are described. Analysis of web information resources in the field of education

The purpose of the thesis is to search out, analyse and evaluate an open access and commercial electronic information resources in educational theories available on WWW. First and sekond part determinates topic of education, describes his development, problems, nomenclature, experimental method and information support. The objective of the thesis is to analyse and evaluate selected bibliographic and full-text databases, digital libraries, portals, subject gateways and catalogs. Online services are especially emphasized. Analyses are elaboration in the Czech education theory context. Final summary evaluates results of analysis.
Czech libraries on the social network service Facebook

The goal of this thesis is to find out how the Czech libraries present themselves on the social network - Facebook. It consists of five sections and conclusion. The first section describes a current status of the internet and the social networks, possibilities of communication and feedback in these environments and defines the "new generation" of the libraries' users. The second section describes Facebook's social network in greater detail. The third part describes integration of the Czech libraries into this environment. The fourth section consists of analysis and practical piece: the survey and its conclusions. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of gathered information on presentation of the Czech libraries on the Facebook social network and survey carried out on the group of the Czech Libraries Web Administrators on this network.
Plagiarism Prevention as a Goal of Information Education: Possible Solutions in the Environment of Academic Libraries in the Czech Republic

Cílem diplomové práce je představení problematiky plagiátorství a autorské etiky, jakožto předmětu informačního vzdělávání v prostředí vysokoškolských knihoven. V úvodu práce budou vymezeny základní pojmy a nastíněny jejich vzájemné vztahy. Na základě výsledků dotazníkového průzkumu budou podrobněji popsány aktivity, které v oblasti prevence plagiátorství vyvíjejí knihovny na veřejných vysokých školách v České republice. Charakterizovány budou i vybrané zahraniční projekty s důrazem na situaci v USA, Velké Británii a Skandinávii. Na základě publikovaných zkušeností především ze zahraničních knihoven bude uveden přehled aktivit, kterými mohou vysokoškolské knihovny přispět k prevenci plagiátorství u studentů. V závěru práce budou nastíněny možnosti systematického začlenění vybraných aktivit do programů informačního vzdělávání na českých vysokých školách.
Education by reading and education towards reading

Tématem práce je výchova dětí, mládeže, dospělých a starých lidí k četbě, a také snaha o výchovu těchto skupin pomocí četby. Cílem diplomové práce je zjištění stavu a způsobů čtenářské výchovy v České republice. Jednotlivé způsoby výchovy se od sebe liší v závislosti na věku jedinců, na způsobu výchovy v rodině a ve škole. Dalším faktorem ovlivňujícím čtenářskou výchovu je způsob chování v dospělosti a schopnost začlenění se do sociálních skupin. Praktickou částí diplomové práce jsou dotazníky vytvořené pro žáky 1. - 5. tříd základních škol. K vyhodnocení nejsou použity grafy, vzhledem k tomu, že bylo částečně použito i otevřených otázek, a proto i statistiky jsou zpracovány pouze částečně.
The Place of the Library within the Organisational Framework of Universities in the Czech Republic and USA: A Comparison Study

The aim of this master thesis was to describe and asses the place of the library within the organizational framework of universities in the Czech Republic and USA. Aim of this thesis is to describe and evaluate the current position of library in organizational structure of colleges and universities in the Czech Republic and USA. First chapter sums up the current situation. For Czech universities in public school sector the corresponding elementary data, relevant legislative scope and position in organizational structure of public universities are emphasized and presented. For US universities the current status is presented with a particular example of five public universities. Second chapter is about current trends in evolution of university libraries in Czech Republic and USA with an emphasis on position in university or college structure. Third chapter is the essential part of the thesis. It contains report about survey performed with representatives of Czech public universities and representatives of given libraries. Last chapter presents parallel research done in USA.
Seniors and the issue of digital divide

Tato disertační práce se zabývá tématem digitální propasti, která je řešena z hlediska seniorů a práce s internetem. V dnešní době rozmachu technologií a jejich penetrace do všech sfér života je nezbytné, aby starší lidé nebyli digitálně vyloučeni a mohli plnohodnotně využívat všech výhod a zjednodušení, které internet a technologie přináší. Prostředkem k získání digitálních kompetencí je vzdělávání v oblasti informační gramotnosti, které může být poskytováno prostřednictvím sítě knihoven. Práce představuje celý teoretický rámec problematiky, nicméně hlavním přínosem je výzkumná a aplikační část. Výzkumy probíhaly v kvalitativní i kvantitativní rovině a přinesly odpovědi zejména na otázky, jakým způsobem dnes senioři internet využívají a o jaká témata jeví největší zájem z hlediska svého dalšího vzdělávání. Kvantitativního výzkumu se účastnilo více než 750 osob a na základě výsledků dotazníku bylo možné navrhnout metodickou příručku pro vzdělávací lekce. Příručka obsahuje návrh deseti lekcí s tématy, která jsou podložená získanými daty. Dvě z těchto lekcí byly otestovány v rámci evaluačního výzkumu. Příručka existuje ve formě e-knihy a je volně šířena mezi knihovny a další instituce.
Information behavior and learning in the context of new media: Digital games and simulations as complex systems for information representation

This dissertation considers digital games and simulations as complex systems of information representation and explores their specific aspects influencing the process of knowledge acquisition. It focuses on process of mental model creation, information behavior and situational emotional and cognitive engagement. The methodological approach is grounded in variety of disciplines including information science, educational science, new media studies and computer science. The main method used is educational experiment. The use of digital game-based and non-digital game-based educational intervention is compared to similar program based on traditional schooling methods and classic lectures. The experiment outcomes are divided into four large segments exploring influence of digital games on process of mental models creation, motivation for future information behavior, situational emotional experience and social interaction.
The practice of bachelor students of the librarianship

The bachelor's thesis provides information about general high school library and information practice recommendation, that is based on document "European Curriculum Reflections on Library and Information Science Education". The thesis brings information on the text of The Institute Curricula and gives the analysis of students internships that run over at three high schools in the Czech Republic (universities in Praha, Brno and Opava). The introduction describes a genesis of the Bologna Process initiatives and their development. In the next part, there is a brief introduction to the European Curriculum Reflections. The text itself is a conclusion of the EU project inspired by discussions around the Bologna Process. Subsequently, the chapter 11 titled "Practice and Theory: Placement as a part of the Curriculum" is introduced. The third chapter of the thesis focuses on students' internships that run over at the abovementioned high schools. The relevant information obtained from the Library and Information Science university teachers are presented, followed by results compilation and comparison. Use of electronic information resources in the Czech language and literature classes at high schools

This diploma thesis is focused on information education and using electronic information sources in Czech Language and Literature classes at Czech secondary schools. It consists of three parts. The first, theoretical part addresses information literacy in the Czech Republic, national information education policy and contemporary trends in using modern information and communication technologies in the classroom. The second part includes an overview of open online information sources for Czech Language and Literature classes which could be used in the classroom. The thesis also includes an inquiry into the use of electronic information sources in Czech Language and Literature classes at secondary schools. The research was conducted at two general secondary education schools - Jiráskovo gymnázium in Náchod and Gymnázium Broumov.
