Legal issues of establishing European political parties
Skalická, Pavlína ; Svoboda, Pavel (advisor) ; Pítrová, Lenka (referee)
The goal of this diploma thesis is to define the European political parties. The thesis has been divided into five chapters, which are further subdivided. The reason why I have chosen this topic is quite simple - to analyse the current status of the European political parties and introduce them to wider audience not to be confused anymore with political groups in the European Parliament. In the first chapter the thesis brings a brief definition of the legal constitution of political groups in the European Parliament. For many years there has been confusion between the concept of a European political party and political group, so the thesis defines the political groups and its position in the European Parliament in order to create a basis for their differentiation from the European political parties. The second chapter is devoted to create a definition of the European political party and to bring the legal regulation of the European political parties. The thesis focuses also on the variability of their legal base in the treaties of the European Union (legal base before the Treaty of Lisbon, legal base in the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe and legal base in the Treaty of Lisbon). The third chapter is dedicated to legal issues of the European political parties. Emphasis was put on...

Málek, Jan ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Škrábalová, Lenka (referee)
Text of the thesis focuses on the activity of the Group of the European People's Party in the European Parliament. It focuses on this issue from three different perspectives. The first perspective presents a theoretical approach on the concept of europarty as transnational political actor that has developed on the basis of the development of the European integration and the development of the European institutions. The second perspective focuses on the work of the European People's Party, as a classic example transnational European party structure. It refers to its historical development and formation in the context of strengthening the position of the European Parliament. It also encompasses the Group of the European People's Party and its influence in the European Parliament in historical perspective. At the same time reveals the inner structure, program policies and operation mechanism of this parliamentary faction. The third perspective focuses on the analysis of the cohesion of the Group of the European People's Party in the seventh term of the European Parliament. The group cohesion is viewed as one of the main characters determining the strength and importance of the parliamentary factions. The analysis is based on the theoretical assumptions of British political scientist Simon Hix. In...
Legislative Process in the European Union: European Citizens' Initiative
Houda, Ondřej ; Knutelská, Viera (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This thesis is embedded in the theoretical approach of multilevel governance and presumption of the rational behaviour of actors. Using the method of process tracing it aims to uncover the legislative process in the European Union. It is a single case study and as a case was chosen the negotiation of the regulation of the citizens' initiative. Various actors were involved in the negotiations, this thesis focuses on the main one - European Commission, European Parliament, the Council, interest organisations and national parliaments. The thesis presumed, that all actors will try to push through their interests based on their rational choice. This presumption was verified, although the success rate of the players varied a lot. As the most successful should be considered the European Parliament, who defended the interests of the individuals and the Council, which apparently represented the interests of the governments of the member states (especially in the issues of lowering the bureaucratic burden). The interest organisations showed their positions clearly, however the Commission did not take their positions much into account while preparing the draft regulation. The position of the national parliaments was different then presumed. Although the thesis expected them to be directly involved in the...

Applying the second-order elections model on the European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic
Lubinová, Tereza ; Kubát, Michal (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The bachelor thesis Applying the second-order elections model on the European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic deals with the theory of second-order elections and the possibility of its application to the European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic, which took place in 2004 and 2009. The first part of the work attends to origin and development of theories of second-order elections. The basis of the research of this theory was the first direct elections to the European Parliament in 1979. Based on the analyses of these elections the first comprehensive theory of second order elections was created by Karlheinz Reif and Hermann Schmitt. This theory was subsequently modified in consideration of the increasing elections. The second part of the work analyzes elections to the European Parliament in the Czech Republic in terms of the theory of second-order elections, i.e. verifies hypotheses resulting from this theory to the elections in 2004 and consequently in 2009. The final chapter is the comparison of obtained results, which verifies whether elections in 2004 show the same results as the elections in 2009. The aim is to verify the validity of hypotheses and based on that assess whether the European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic correspond to second-order elections.
Political Development of the Latvian Pro-Soviet Communists: Alfred Rubiks and Tatyana Zhdanok
Meissner, Jan ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the political evolution of two Latvian politicians, Alfred Rubiks and Tatyana Zhdanok, both of whom are currently members of the European Parliament. Also, both of them fought actively against the Latvian independence in the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, when the USSR began to crumble. This paradox is highlighted by the fact that both of the politicians are banned by law from participating in general and local elections in Latvia. The first chapter introduces the reader to the circumstances, causes and consequences of the polarization, dividing the society and politics into two groups, the sympathizers and contestants of independence, in the former Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic in the late 1980s. Understanding of those factors is crucial to the analysis of the political biographies of the two politicians, as they affected their political evolution significantly. The following two chapters are formed by the proper analysis of the two political biographies of Rubiks and Zhdanok. They provide answers to questions: How did the socio- economic origin of the two politicians influence their political carrier? What was their position during the transformation mentioned above and what were their key arguments? In what role did they appear on the political...

Buňková, Jana ; Matuchová, Klára (advisor) ; Morgan, Craig Alan (referee)
This diploma thesis is a sociolinguistic analysis of speeches rendered in English by members of the European Parliament. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze the stylistic patterns in speeches of members of the European Parliament based on gender, as a sociolinguistic factor. This thesis is based on three main linguistic disciplines: grammar, stylistics and sociolinguistics. The practical part is based on a research of 100 randomly chosen members of the European Parliament, 50 men and 50 women, whose speeches rendered in English, were transcribed and analyzed by the quantitative method used for a comparison of linguistic features. This thesis predominantly focuses on grammatical analysis of parts of speech and syntax. It also deals with hyper- sentential links: cohesion and coherence. This thesis also includes profiles of MEP which, together with other sociolinguistic researches, help to interpret the results of a grammatical analysis. The practical part is concluded by profiles of hypothetic MEPs who are likely to render their speech in English.

Coufalová, Kateřina ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
Regional political parties and the European Union: Case study of Spain Abstract The diploma thesis "Regional political parties and the European Union: Case study of Spain" focuses on the area of the regional parties on the stage of the European Parliament, a subject which has not been analysed thoroughly in the past. Special emphasis is placed on the analysis of this phenomenon on the case of the Spanish historical regions (Catalonia, Basque Country, Galicia) which are a recognizable proof of the remarkable institutional strengthening in the framework of a regionalized unitary state. The methodology of triangulation was used for the analysis of this issue as the data of the diverse type (i.e. electoral results, party's material etc.) have been put together through different methods (as a qualitative and quantitative content analysis, deductive and comparative approaches) with the aim to reveal the complete character of the issue and to reach the objective results as possible. The study focuses on the analysis of the regional parties on the European level through their cooperation in the European federations of the political parties as well as the framework of the political groups in the European Parliament. The emphasis is also placed on the analysis of the own work of the members of the European Parliament...
Democratic deficit of the EU: options of evolvement
Tomášová, Tereza ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
Diploma thesis " Democratic deficit of the EU: options of evolvement" deals with democracy and democratic legitimacy of the European Union. It represents a particular concept of the EU's democratic deficit, which is ambiguous term, but generally indicates a lack of democracy- particularly the lack of popular participation in the governance or a lack of democratic legitimacy of EU institutions and decision-making. The aim of my work was, according to the hypotheses to determine what is causing the EU's democratic deficit, whether it is a serious problem that should be addressed at European level, and if so, what are the possibilities for minimizing or further evolvement. To explore this issue further, I examine the theory of democratic legitimacy in the introduction and divide it into the "input and output" legitimacy. Subsequently, I also introduced methodology and the current debate on democratic deficit in the leading periodicals, dealing with the EU and think tanks. The second part deals with the history of the democratic deficit and its various definitions, follows with a presentation of my two hypotheses dealing with the question whether or not the EU's democratic deficit is a problem. In the third part, my two hypotheses are tested on the project of the Single European Sky, which aims to...
