Beránková, Barbora ; Pokorný, Jan (advisor) ; Hraba, Zdeněk (referee)
Throughout Czech history theatre played a pivotal role in the formation of Czech language and culture. Theatre embodies much of what makes Czech culture unique in Europe, but also ties Czech Republic together with its neighbours who share a similar cultural heritage. This thesis first analyses the development of the institutional and legislative framework of theatre and its financing. In following chapters this thesis offers an overview of the different legal forms of theatres, both profit and non-profit. Specific situation of the theatres still owned by state is examined in detail, explaining and illustrating many of the difficulties and obstacles caused by this form of legal existence. The process of transformation of allowance organizations is then described and evaluated using examples of selected transformed theatres. As a connected issue, the perceived difference between profit oriented and non-profit theatres is examined, which leads to exploration of the relationship between the cultural economic policies and the social importance of culture. In this context, the system of financing of theatres is then explained, detailing both tax legislature and the funding of theatre from public sources. In the closing segment, some ideas for improving the current system of funding are offered for...

Hnilica, Jiří ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Lenderová, Milena (referee) ; Ory, Pascal (referee)
This work seeks to answer questions concerning the role France played in shaping the Czechoslovak elite in the first half of the 20th century. The study rests on three basic pillars. The first is a study of the framework in which Franco-Czechoslovak relations developed in the area of culture, cultural and educational policy. The second pillar is the question of France's direct involvement in Czechoslovakia - by means of solid structures created in connection with the establishment of the new state, and with the development of active French cultural policy after 1918. On the one hand, the French Institute in Prague, which, in the period under study, wanted to be more than a mere cultural centre, its ambitions primarily concerning scientific cooperation (language, philosophy, history, law, medicine, economics, chemistry, technical disciplines). On the other hand, the French Real Grammar School in Prague, the example of which gives a very good study of the competitive limits of cooperation between the two countries in the field of secondary education. Despite the growing number of students, this private institution (nationalised in 1937), never stopped addressing a key question: is it a Czechoslovak school teaching in French or a French educational institution operating in Czechoslovakia? The third pillar is...

Frajtová, Věra ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This Bachelor thesis aims to analyze the principle of democratization of culture in the conception of André Malraux, the first French Minister of culture, who held the office between 1959 and 1969. Democratization of culture has represented one of the main pillars of French cultural policy since its origins in 1959 when the first French Ministry of Culture was established. The first chapter explains under which circumstances this Ministry of Cultural Affairs was created. Also, it presents the state institutions that were affecting the cultural domain during this period. It shows how democratization of culture was set up as a priority of the newly established Ministry. The second chapter analyzes the official speeches by André Malraux and tries to define the main points of his conception. Next, the chapter shows how these crucial aspects were transformed into the political program of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The last chapter presents the project of maisons de la culture, new cultural centers symbolizing the whole Malraux's era. Realization of the project brought to light some difficulties that became the sources of criticisms of Malraux's policy. These criticisms shown in the last part of the work serve till today as an important reference for the development of French cultural policy.
Cultural Policy of the United States and the USSR after World War II.
Vorlová, Tereza ; Reiman, Michal (advisor) ; Vykoukal, Jiří (referee)
After the Second World War the United States and the Soviet Union started off with almost opposite models of cultural policy, eight years later in the midst of Cold War their cultural policies were as close as they ever would get. Cultural policy had changed; this thesis analyzed the quality and direction of this change. In the Soviet Union the post-war ideological campaigns have changed the nature of Soviet cultural policy in the sense that punishment was no longer lethal. The purpose of these campaigns had become redefining what Soviet culture should look like. This policy, however, was not practical, but rather rhetorical. The ultimate goal was not to affect culture, but rather to demonstrate what it should and should not look like. Cultural policy proper was overshadowed completely by cultural policy as display. In the United States the House Un-American Activities Committee attacked the most prominent and loud center of American culture - Hollywood. In this case again, the purpose of this policy has not been to exert actual influence on culture, but rather to insist, that there are parts of culture that can be "un-American". In the American case this policy was even more "as display" than in the Soviet Union, simply because the HUAC could not be the source of actual restrictive cultural policy. Overall...
The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)
Dušek, Petr ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Rigorous thesis "The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)" deals with propaganda in the sports journalism. Its aim is to evaluate how the Czechoslovak press reported about successes of one of the best domestic athlet Emil Zatopek at the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki. I defined a hypothesis, based on specialized literature and observation, that journalists exploited Zatopek's triumphs for propagandistic reasons, and presented the successful athlet as a socialist hero. I verified this hypothesis by means of quantitative content analysis of the journals Rude pravo and Lidova demokracie. I defined two secondary hypothesis as well: The news coverage of the Olympic Games in 1952 was more propagandistically damaged than the Olympic Games in 1948, and the news coverage by Rude pravo of both Olympic Games was more propagandistically damaged than by Lidova demokracie. In the analysis I measure the propagandistic damage of the articles, the photos and the representations of Emil Zatopek. The whole research has a deep theoretical background, which includes a definition of propaganda, an outline of the cultural policy 1948-1952, and a definition of the "hero" concept based on different conceptions from both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Alternative Culture in the Czech Republic after 1989
Chorvátovičová, Iva ; Munková, Gabriela (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
This thesis describes the phenomenon of alternative culture in public policy. The first part seeks to define what alternative culture means and builds on the research mainly from sociology and cultural studies. Very useful are then specific theory of social deviance, the theory of subcultures and postsubcultures. At the same time, the paper looks into the past, before 1989, when the alternative culture phenomenon was clearly defined, standing outside the mainstream culture and the alternative culture was illegal. Through the analysis of some events and political cases from the recent past, there could be seen both differences between alternative culture and an attitude to it before 1989, but also some important parallels with the current situation of alternative culture. Alternative culture is later specified by current alternative underground subcultures: freetekno - DIY, squatting and street art. In the case of these three controversial subcultures, the paper deals with an attitude of public policy to these subcultures through the extremism policy. The next part the paper deals with the contemporary cultural politics in the country. Briefly, it describes and outlines the current situation and possible areas for innovation in the context of alternative culture. In the last phase this thesis deals...
