The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization
Herold, Miroslav ; Petráček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee) ; Royt, Jan (referee)
The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. The recatholicization of this kingdom and its associated countries enabled the growth of St John's veneration, which by the end of the 17th century had already begun to spread vigorously beyond their borders. At the beginning of the 18th century, this...
The Theology of Holiness According to St John Paul II
Bušková, Magda ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Červenková, Denisa (referee) ; Svatoň, Robert (referee)
v anglickém jazyce: The primary focus of this study on the theology of holiness, according to St John Paul II, is to explore how he understands and interprets Christian holiness and what perspective he brings to the subject. The study offers a brief view of the saints he beatified and canonised, followed by insight into the moments of his life and spirituality, exploring, in line with the approach of spiritual theology, the appeal to understand him from within. The study's approach further reflects the theme of holiness from the position of selected texts of the Second Vatican Council. It intentionally takes into account the post-conciliar interpretation of Karol Wojtyła to consider the roots of his theology of holiness. The research of the theology of holiness in John Paul II's magisterium follows within selected encyclicals, especially Redemptor Hominis, Dives in Misericordia, Dominum et Vivificantem, and Redemptoris Missio, to explore aspects and characteristics he emphasised. The basic thesis and the study's golden thread is the approach of Christian holiness described as the union of Jesus Christ with a Christian in the Holy Spirit and the realisation of such union in the Church. Klíčová slova v anglickém jazyce: St John Paul II, holiness, union with Christ, Holy Spirit, mission, kingdom of God
Theoretical, Practical and Research Aspects of Catechetical Work with Adults in the Context of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church
Matějková, Veronika ; Liguš, Ján (advisor) ; Noble, Ivana (referee) ; Kaplánek, Michal (referee)
1 Abstract The aim of the presented thesis was to compactly document and evaluate the theoretical, practical and research aspects of catechetical work from the perspective of practical theology with adults in the CzHCh from its foundation (1920) to the present (2018). In this paper we used a mixed method, i.e. a combination of qualitative and quantitative questioning, according to the Danish theologian Van der Ven. Specifically, the method of historical-critical analysis of the source material was predominant in the second chapter, mainly analysing all available printed (books, scripts, journal articles, congregational documents) and other CzHCh sources dealing with adult catechesis in the CzHCh. The analysis of the sources was combined with discursive analysis and a diachronic method tracing the changes or development of phenomena between periods. In the third chapter, using an empirical-exploratory method, we presented the research with an author-designed questionnaire survey. Some of the data were supplemented by authorized interviews with memoirists. This work can now serve as a basic practical-theological analysis 2 for the development of adult catechesis in the current CzHCh, for the future IX. Ordinary Assembly of the CzHCh (2024). At the same time, this work is a contribution to the field of...

Canonization of Saint Thomas Aquinas Abstract This thesis inquires into the canonization process of Thomas Aquinas, in relation to specific circumstances and general usage of the era on the field of canonizing saints. While at the grave of the reverend master, miracles were produced and the popular cult was rising, on western universities, a doctrinal dispute has flared up which touched Thomas' doctrine, as well. The case has not be resolved untill nearly fifty years, when the pope John XXII has shown interest in canonizing one important personality of Dominican order. The choice fell on Thomas. The minor friars, protected by the roman king Louis IV the Bavarian, oposed but the pope got his purpose through, and so Thomas' learning became the leading stream in theology and thinking. The aim of this thesis is to approach period specificities of the cult of saints and canonization processes, to outline a brief history of Thomas' way to canonization and following occurrences, and to try to figure out broader context of the process, evaluating the importance of particular aspects at the same time. The thesis is based on canonization documents and relies on relevant sources and specialized literature.
