Prostitution Policy in the Czech Republic: Agenda setting
Bodocká, Anna ; Hejzlarová, Eva (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on understanding the process of prostitution policy-making in the Czech Republic using agenda-setting theory in relation to the basics of prostitution policy in the country. The Czech Republic is one of the countries that do not have its legislation, therefore the thesis also describes and explains the situation that has preceded the proposals for the regulation of prostitution. The research is based on secondary data in the form of public policy documents, academic publications, or media reports in connection with the agenda-setting of prostitution policy in the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2019. The thesis focuses on three time periods, which match the legislative attempts to regulate prostitution. This is based on the conceptual scheme of the thesis, which includes components of the formation and subsequent agenda-setting. Finally, it focuses on the overall explanation through the model of "The four 'P's". The text relies on the public policy frameworks described in the theoretical section. It presents the agenda-setting of prostitution policy in the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2019, which was not successful and had no spillover to the next phase of the policy process.
Framing of alcohol in the Czech press and its comparison in the period before and during COVID-19 pandemic
Andresek, Šimon ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on how the topic of alcohol consumption was framed in the Czech press in two subsequent periods: 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. The emphasis is put on comparing the findings from both research periods, both in terms of frames and other variables studied, such as the topic, the source cited, or the relationship between the sex of the protagonists and the narrative(s) present. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the influence of media content on public sphere, through the description of the phenomenon of agenda-setting. Then the framing itself is presented, both through the perspective of the agenda-setting theory (as a subset of it), but also as a completely autonomous phenomenon. Different perspectives on framing are presented which are then illustrated with several spatiotemporally distinct studies that address the media framing of alcohol use. The analytical part consists of two methodological components - qualitative and quantitative content analysis. First, qualitative content analysis is used in order to find and describe issue-specific frames at the forefront of the generic conflict frame. Subsequently, the presence of the described specific conflict narratives in both research periods is quantified and the findings are compared. The results suggest that alcohol...

Furthermore, it covers theoretical concepts of media studies such as agenda setting and framing theory. The thesis also gives a summary of the current situation regarding renewable energy sources in the Czech Republic and describes significant events of the analysed period that were related to renewable energy. The methodological part of the thesis presents the research goals, the characteristics of the quantitative content analysis and the research design. The main findings of the thesis are the fluctuation in the number of articles during the years studied and the significant increase in media attention towards renewable energy in 2022. Most frequently covered energy source was solar energy. The actors cited were mostly elites such as politicians, industrialists and entrepreneurs. Visual framing of the war in Ukraine
Zítko, Tomáš ; Lábová, Sandra (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The thesis "Visual Framing of the War in Ukraine" examines how Czech and foreign newspapers construct the media image of this conflict in published photographs. The theoretical focus of the thesis is mainly on framing theory and its visual dimension, agenda setting and peace journalism, using this normative direction as a starting point for the frames analysed in the practical part of the thesis. The analysis combines quantitative and qualitative approaches The aim of the quantitative part of the analysis was to fill in the previously missing data on the visual framing of the war in Ukraine by Czech and foreign media. A comparisonof setting Donald Trump's agenda in the US presidential elections in 2016 and 2020
Kratschmer, Adam ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The importance of social media in U.S. politics is on the rise and influences what journalists write about, which can affect what readers consider important. During the last presidential election, Twitter became an important communication tool for one of the candidates, Donald Trump. The first part of this thesis examines Trump's communication strategy on Twitter during both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. Specific Twitter tools that may have influenced the resulting number of responses are analyzed. A higher number of reactions to tweets caused them to reach journalists more often, who reported the content to their readers, thus giving Trump's account more attention. The second part examines the intermediate agenda-setting effect between the most circulated US newspapers and Trump's tweets, and tracks how often Trump, and his Twitter account were referenced in selected media outlets during both presidential campaigns. Using quantitative content analysis, it was found that the use of the twitter account varied significantly during the campaigns and different tools received different responses. It also showed that there were common themes, but also very different themes. When comparing mentions, it was found that Trump and his twitter account were mentioned significantly less than in the...
The Portrayal of the Greek Economic Crisis in Czech Media
Mrňáková, Nicole ; Tsivos, Konstantinos (advisor) ; Klimeš, David (referee)
This thesis deals with the way how Czech newspaper reported about Greek debt crisis and which frames were used to illustrate Greece. In the theoretical part the history of Greece is described, since independence till the debt crisis. The historical context captures difficult times of Greek history which contributed to the spiral of dept crisis lasting from 2010 to 2018. In the following part some of the important concepts concerning agenda setting, gatekeeping and frame analysis are compared. Some of the important foreign studies concerning frame theory and even framing of the Greek debt crisis in Czech media are depicted. The methodology of the thesis is formed by a qualitative analysis of the articles from two peaks of the crisis - the first half of 2010 and the first half of 2015. In the first period the frames used by Czech media were predominantly following the German point of view and the point of view of the European creditors. Journalists only rarely reflected the real life of the Greeks which was quite different from the used stereotypes. The second period was marked by the world affairs like the immigration crisis or invasion to Ucraine and the sanctions against Russia. In many cases the framing of the crisis concentrated on the character of the Greek nation and its moral judgement as a...
The Social Housing Act through the lens of the Multiple Stream Framework
Dubišarová, Pavla ; Angelovská, Olga (advisor) ; Novotný, Vilém (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to describe and explain the process of advocacy of the Act on Social Housing in two different governmental periods, to find out the reasons for its failure and what strategies the actors used to promote their interests. The Act has been discussed in political discourse since 2007. During the government period of Bohuslav Sobotka, the agenda was pushed through and the substantive plan for the law was subsequently created. In the second government term of Andrej Babiš, work on the substantive plan was abandoned soon after the government was formed, and towards the end of the term there was an effort to push through the part dealing with the Act on Affordable Housing together with the Act on Public Benefit Housing Companies. In both periods, advocacy efforts were unsuccessful. Considering how complex and ambiguous the issue of the housing crisis and the actors involved in it are, I chose the Multiple Stream Framework for research. To analyse the policies, I used thematic analysis to examine secondary data such as public policy documents, strategic documents, expert studies and media outputs. The second type of data I used in my thesis were expert interviews. The results provide information on what strategies were used by the different actors, what were the main disagreements...
Media image of Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar in selected press from the period of split of Czechoslovakia
Matějková, Kristýna ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
Czechoslovakia underwent a challenging transition from a communist regime to a democratic system in the 1990s. Some Slovak citizens perceived this period as their chance to seek emancipation. This desire, nourished by some political figures, started the division process of the Czechoslovak federation, which resulted in a series of bargaining between the two national prime ministers, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar. The citizens of the federation were waiting to see how their protracted meetings would unfold. And the only intermediary that could regularly bring them information, were the media. Nevertheless, through its important role of informing the public, the media also has a considerable power to influence what people consider important and what they think about. The way in which the media covered all events that led to the breakup may have had an effect on the public opinion on the existence of Czechoslovakia. This diploma thesis offers a view on how selected Czechoslovak press in 1992 portrayed the main characters of the final split of Czechoslovakia, focusing on the perception of Václav Klaus in Slovak media and Vladimír Mečiar in Czech media.
