Media Education and Misinformation at the First Stage of Primary School

This master's thesis deals with the connection between reading and media literacy and the potential use of this connection in primary schools during of not only the Czech language lessons, to develop these literacies within the cross-curricular topic of media education. The first part of this thesis explains important concepts related to reading and media literacy and everything related to this topic. In the practical second part, the knowledge gained from the theoretical part is utilized to create a methodology and working sheets. The methodology serves as a guide for teachers on how to work with the worksheets with students in the second educational period of the first grade of primary school. The created worksheets should contribute to the development of media and reading literacy for students attending the 4th or 5th grade of primary school. Jak učit o fake news?

This diploma thesis examines the phenomenon of fake news and focuses on the pedagogical aspects of teaching about it. Initially, it presents the fundamental elements that underpin the phenomenon. The thesis explores the formation of news and its transmission to recipients, followed by an exploration of the concept of fake news. Furthermore, the thesis provides a historical overview of fake news, divides it into distinct periods, while also considering the impact of technological advancements on information dissemination. The discussion then delves into cognitive and social biases, highlighting their influence on individuals' susceptibility to fake news. The thesis subsequently introduces various literacies (information, media a digital) that can aid in combatting fake news, also presents initiatives of international agencies such as UNESCO and the European Commission, as well as the national strategy outlined in the Education Framework Programme. Additionally, the thesis examines existing methodologies that address the pedagogical aspects of teaching about fake news. Building on the theoretical part, the thesis develops teaching units that cover relevant topics related to fake news. These units encompass activities such as role-playing, critical analysis of texts, exploration of cognitive biases and the historical context of fake news. Most of these teaching units have undergone practical testing to ensure their effectiveness.
Perspectives on the Media Literacy in the Czech Republic

The bachelor thesis consists of two parts. A theoretical part that explains the terms used to implement the work and describes its theoretical basis, and a practical part in the form of written interviews with respondents from the field of media education. The theoretical part introduces the interview genre and describes its possible methods, approximates the requirements of media education contained in the framework educational programs and recommended expected outputs, and presents projects focused on media literacy. The practical part of the work consists of interviews with Přemysl Danda, PhDr. Jan Jirák Ph.D., Michal Kaderka and PhDr. Radim Wolák.
New media as a means of obtaining information among secondary school students

This diploma thesis entitled New media as a means of obtaining information among secondary school students deals with the role of new media in obtaining information among students of the second year of grammar schools and non-grammar school types of secondary schools. The aim of the thesis is to find out what news consumption looks like among secondary school students, whether they get information only through new media, or if some of them turn to traditional media as well. The theoretical part of the thesis describes what new media look like today, or whether they can be an easier means of spreading disinformation. Part of the work is devoted to how different authors view media literacy. The topic of the theoretical part is also the news consumption of young people - what means media literacy, whether young people are able to distinguish between information and disinformation, and that problematic media use can, in the worst case, end up in cyberbullying. The analytical section is devoted to a questionnaire survey, which was carried out among students of the second year of secondary schools in seven regions. 314 students in the respective regional towns participated in the research. Filter bubbles and the knowledge of filter bubbles among Facebook users

The media are an integral part of today's world, political and cultural events and are a key tool for creating worldviews. At the same time, they can also function as one of the basic building blocks for shaping the social core of a person, and thus also society and its values. It is necessary for the media to be the subject not only of ordinary conversations, articles and reports, but also the subject of study at an academic level. Facebook is one of the most dominant social networks today. At the same time, the developers themselves do not hide the fact that algorithms work on its platform, which monitor users' personal preferences and data, there are posts they spend the most time on, and based on this data, they create a personalized environment full of posts that the algorithms themselves deem appropriate. According to their own judgment, do the algorithmic practices of Facebook users lock them into information loops called Information bubbles, or do they only improve the quality of their time spent by filtering relevant or irrelevant content? Media education and literacy of future teachers of health education at the Fakulty of Education of Charles University

Master thesis Media education and literacy of future teachers of health education at the Fakulty of Education of Charles University deals with the issue of their readiness to teach this area in schools. The aim of the thesis was to find out to what extent students of the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Health Education are ready to implement media education in schools. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical definition of media education and literacy and related terminology. Furthermore, I have included in my work the historical development and gradual inclusion of this issue in Czech curriculum documents. In the practical part, using quantitative and qualitative methods, research was conducted with the participation of 34 selected students, which focused on the readiness of future teachers to teach media education in schools. The data arising from the questionnaire survey were graphically processed and commented. Furthermore, the views of four respondents on the issue of teaching on this topic are part of my thesis. The research revealed that most students had been marginally exposed to media education during their undergraduate studies, but felt this preparation was insufficient for their future teaching practice. Use of tablets by preschool children according to the level of education of their parents

The master thesis focuses on the influence of the highest achieved education of parents on the use of tablets by their children. The thesis aims are to review the theoretical background from three main areas (media, preschool child, and leisure). First, the reader gets acquainted with the basic concepts in the field of media and their characteristics, and the disposition of the preschool child in general. Last but not least, the thesis will introduce media's impact on the children, and their leisure time. The practical part contains a research survey to find out the possible influence of the highest achieved education of parents on how preschool children use tablets. In the end, the research survey results are confronted with the established hypotheses and connected with theoretical knowledge.
Youth media literacy and media use as percieved by teachers

The Master's thesis deals with the view of teachers on complex issues related to the media literacy of adolescents and the concept of media education. The first part of the work provides the necessary theoretical background, on which the empirical part stands and defines key terms related to the topic. The first chapter outlines the approaches by which it is possible to understand teacher's personality and identity. Among other things, the importance of the role that teachers play in the educational process is emphasized here. The second chapter narrows its focus to the concept of media literacy and media education. The third chapter of the thesis deals with the way how young people use the media and deals with related risks that they may encounter. The thesis includes an empirical study as well, which was realized among teachers working at elementary schools. The aim of the survey was primarily to find out and describe how teachers perceive the usage of media and how they evaluate the level of media literacy of their pupils. The discussion and the conclusion of the work then summarize the findings.
Media education in chemistry teaching

This thesis deals with the integration of media education into chemistry teaching. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part develops media education as a tool to obtain media literacy, didactics approach in teaching of media education and methods used in those teachings. Undisputable part of the first part of this thesis is the position of media education in curricular documents in the Czech Republic and investigation of a real state of media education teachings at Czech primary and secondary schools. The results of the investigation showed that the skill of media literacy of students in the Czech Republic is rather below average. The investigation also showed that the most common form of implementation of media education teaching is integration into other educational areas. Second part of the thesis contains a questionnaire among teachers of science subjects focused on integration of media education and educational materials which were prepared after evaluation of first part of the thesis, and which are a practical demonstration of a relationship between media education and chemistry subject.
