The Diploma thesis "Devotion and iconography of st. Mary Magdalen" - Two biblical characters have been associated with Mary Magdalene since the time of Gregory the Great; the unnamed sinner and Mary of Bethany. According to the Bible Mary Magdalene was one of the women who accompanied Jesus during His ministry. She was the woman from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons. She washed Jesus' feet with her tears and ointment. When Jesus was crucified she was there standing under the cross. She was present at His funeral. On Easter Sunday she went to the grave of the Lord to anoint His body. She discovered the empty tomb and saw the resurrected Jesus, who appeared to her as a gardener and sent her to announce His Resurrection to His disciples. She is considered "the apostle of the Apostles". According to an old French legend she was put in a boat without sails or oars and sailed to Marseilles, where she preached the gospel. Then she retreated to a cavern. There she lived as a recluse for thirty years. Every day she was lifted by angels up to heaven. She was buried in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume. This thesis aims to introduce the readers to characteristic aspects of britannic folklore and to try to trace them afterwards in the book La Légende de la mort chez les Bretons armoricains by Anatole Le Braz. To this purpose is used a typology of three chosen characters, namely the character of death Ankou, night laundress and rector. On the basis of the analysis it is possible to remark the influence of those aspects on popular tellings. Firstly the thesis presents the author and his life. Then it briefly shows important historical events that led to britannic renaissance, in other words to the time, when Anatole Le Braz lived and wrote his books. The following parts concentrate on cultural interferences of Celtic and Christian faith and on extraordinary strong state of Death. The main part of the thesis consists of chapters dedicated to the description of Ankou, night laundress and rector, including analysis of some legends, in which those characters are situated. Pilgrimage legends in Bohemia in the Baroque period
Andršová, Tereza ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
In this paper I deal with the cult of Virgin Mary in Bohemia in the period after the Battle of White Mountain, when there was a very significant rise in the Marian devotion and pilgrimage sites. Around the half of 17th century a substantial change in the social order occurred due to the Battle of White Mountain and subsequent consolidation of Habsburg power. This paper deals with the legends concerning the origin of the pilgrimage sites and the books of miracles. I based my interpretation mainly on the theory of Victor Turner. I was influenced also by a book by Mary Douglas Purity and Danger. I use the examples of Svatá Hora and Stará Boleslav to show how Marian pilgrimages respond to the socio-political changes. Pilgrimage legends managed to link different periods of Bohemian history and thus to legitimate the reinforcement of Catholicism as well as the Habsburg reign. They also managed to bridge social differences and release the social tension, since they involve people from all social classes and articulate a state where the social hierarchy is abolished.

Once upon a time, there was a stranger on the road
Vondráčková, Kristýna ; Listíková, Renáta (advisor) ; Ébert-Zeminová, Catherine (referee)
v anglickém jazyce: This thesis mainly analyzes the five-part novel Gargantua and Pantagruel written by the French author Francois Rabelais. Emphasis is based particularly on an inclusion of Rabelais's work in historical and literary context of the period of transformation between medieval and Renaissance society. More specifically, it deals with the author's humanist opinion and his critique of contemporary society, which is the main line of the work itself. The aim of our thesis is especially an attempt to outline the various possible meanings of the terms « road or path » and « stranger » in Rabelais's work and explain the role of these thematic concepts in the author's concept of criticism of society.
