Influencing International Relations in the South China Sea Based on the China's Food Policy

The South China Sea region is an important area of international events. In this area, the strained relations between China and the neighboring states sharing the given sea and the United States are reflected. Within the framework of the international political discussion, a great deal of attention is directed, for example, to the issue of Taiwan, mineral deposits and international trade. However, not much attention is paid to the importance of marine fisheries for China's expansionist actions, which is the focus of this work. This thesis deals with the question, "How does China's food security affect international relations in the South China Sea?" Using the approach of neo-Malthusian theory, it is possible to monitor the food demands of the Chinese population in the context of food security affected by a degrading environment. Using analysis and subsequent synthesis, sources and information related to food and international relations are examined. The results of the work indicate that China is food-insufficient in the long term and its protein supply is strongly influenced by protein imports, fishing and fish aquaculture production. From food security to food sustainability: the attitudes of the FAO

Tracing the evolution of the food system paradigm, this research investigates the transition from a narrow focus on food security to a comprehensive food sustainability approach. The study analyses the behaviour of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as source institutions, and their potential influence on the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) strategies in addressing global food security challenges. Spanning from 1990 to 2019, the research examines key official documents from the institutions and relevant literature to unravel the interconnectedness between these institutions and FAO's paradigm shift. The findings shed light on the complex dynamics and interactions of international institutions and their role in shaping sustainable development policies within the food security realm.

The diploma thesis deals with monitoring the development of food security in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The specific criteria for the selection of three states were the HDI indicator and the geographical location of the selected states. Through individual indicators from different pillars of food security, the work evaluates the most significant factors that cause food insecurity in the monitored countries. The theoretical part of the thesis explains the basic facts and the background of the problem, contains an explanation of key terms and terms, and defines individual causes and consequences of food security at the level of selected countries. The work also describes the most used indicators measuring food safety. The practical part based on the development of monitored indicators (average protein intake; average protein intake of animal origin; prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity; prevalence of severe food shortage; percentage of the population using basic hygiene services; percentage of the population with access to drinking water; percentage of children under 5 years, suffering from stunting; prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age; variability of food production per person; political stability and absence of violence/terrorism) in the period 2009-2019 examines the factors that influenced changes in these indicators. In the work, it was found that the most important factors influencing the development of food security in the observed states of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe are climatic conditions, political and economic situation, low education of the population and infectious diseases. These factors slow down the economic growth of countries and prevent growth from developing to developed countries and result in food insecurity and consequences.
Hunger games: Discourses of the G7 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa

The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition was launched in 2012 as the main G7 initiative to combat hunger in Africa. Its proclaimed objective was to facilitate cooperation between selected African countries and private sector companies by promoting pro-market reforms and investments in African agriculture. However, it quietly disappeared from public space around 2015, seven years before the end of its programming period. The New Alliance can thus be considered and analysed as a case of failed policy, which has not achieved its declared goals. In this thesis, I examine the discourses of this initiative in official documents of selected G7 countries, focusing on how this initiative was constructed and framed in the wider context of their approaches to global food security and hunger. The selection of the analysed countries (USA, France, and the UK) reflects their distinct positions on the New Alliance. This analysis is supplemented by discourse analysis of western and African civil society actors who took an active role either in a New Alliance project or the anti-New Alliance campaign. Food Security and Machine Learning: Opportunities and Challenges

The emergence of the effects of global warming, as well as the ongoing depletion of fossil fuels and fertile soil pose a serious threat for the future of the agricultural industry. Alternatively, the continuous population growth mainly in the less developed regions highlights the future need of approximately 70-110 percent increase in the overall output of contemporary food production. While the current conventional agriculture deploys a multitude of technologies including the precision agriculture framework, the future needs of the population exceed the projected capabilities of the industry. Machine learning as the current fastest growing technology represents the potential remedy for the emerging issues, yet the extent of successful implementation remains uncertain. The thesis aims to uncover the potential future implications of implementation of machine learning based technology in agriculture through the use of the new scenario building methodology. Potential for Agricultural Trade between China and Central and Eastern Europe within the 16+1 Framework

The goal of the following paper is to analyse the trade potential for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and China in the trade of food products. Even though the trade in food products is comparably low, there are several reasons why it is worth a deeper analysis. Food security is having an important role in the Chinese domestic politics. Due to environmental, socio- economic and demographic changes, China cannot be self-sufficient and is therefore dependent on food imports. Since the introduction of the One Belt One Road Initiative and the 16+1 framework, China aims to improve the cooperation and trade in food commodities with participating countries. CEE can be a reliable partner because it produces high quality products with comparative advantages. With the help of the Gravity Model, the effects of the 16+1 framework was estimated, as well as the trade potential. Following the results, the introduction of the 16+1 framework has a positive and significant effect on agricultural trade between CEE and China. However, only five countries have potential to increase their food exports to China, while the remaining eleven already exceed their food exports. China on the other hand, is exporting below its potential in most of the cases.
Food security and staple crops

Nowadays, with growing population especially in developing countries, hunger and poverty are a huge problem. To reduce or eliminate hunger and poverty, the concept of food security was introduced. This concept describes an ideal situation to be reached. The first part of my work introduces this concept and introduces four basic pillars of food security. Food security is closely related crops, so the second part of my work focuses on selected staple crops that play a role in realizing the food security concept. These crops are rice, corn, potatoes and wheat. The concept will be fulfilled when all four pillars are met simultaneously. There are many obstacles in the way, from economic to climate ones. Changes need to be adapted whether through change in agriculture (more mechanization and electrification) or by improving the conditions of the farmers themselves. Improving the infrastructure will allow the consumer base to be broadened and thus revenue increased. The result is that everything depends on the crops themselves which have the potential to eliminate hunger. In the beginning, it is important to select a seed, to grow a crop that can provide income and that will not grow at the expense of farmers' livelihoods.
