Four Elements in Czech and Portuguese Phraseology
Truplová, Anna ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is to assess the degree of equivalence between Portuguese phrasemes containing the four elements (water, earth, air, and fire) and their Czech counterparts. The theoretical part is dedicated to the Czech and Portuguese concepts of phraseology. Its historical development in both language areas is outlined, as well as the definition of basic concepts, criteria for recognizing phrasemes and their classification. Furthermore, this part of the thesis deals with the circumstances of the emergence of phraseology and its relationship with other disciplines. The theoretical part concludes with a chapter outlining the origin of the symbolism of the four elements. This is followed by the practical part, which consists in creating a list of Portuguese phrasemes and their Czech counterparts and afterwards examining their degree of equivalence. A distinction is made between full equivalence, equivalence based on the presence of the same base word, partial equivalence, idiomatic equivalence, zero equivalence and false friends.
The Subjunctive and Indicative Mood in Object Clauses in Italian and Portuguese
Rudolfová, Michaela ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Mrva, Jan (referee)
The use of the subjunctive and indicative moods is a crucial chapter of Portuguese and Italian grammar. However, there are certain differences in both languages, therefore the aim of this thesis is to compare in which situations the use is identical and where it differs. Due to the breadth of the topic the thesis focuses specifically on object clauses. We begin by providing the general definition of object clauses. We explore their form and then proceed in detail to which tenses and moods may occur in this type of subordinate clause. Afterwards, we concentrate on the specifics of object clauses in Italian and Portuguese contexts respectively. Firstly, we define the situations in which the indicative mood is used in this type of clause in both languages. Secondly, we move onto subjunctive contexts, starting with situations where the use is identical and then proceeding to the differences. Finally, we verify these differences via corpus analysis.

Svobodová, Petra ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
Diploma thesis "Involvement of the People's Republic of China in Africa' deals with the evolution of China-Africa cooperation in the three specified time periods. Mainly it deals with the time period of the last nearly sixty years. This time period was subsequently divided into the period of the Cold War, 1990s and the last period is representing the year 2000 up to the present. Even though the diploma thesis deals with the African continent as a whole unit, the special emphasis was put on the four specific countries - namely Angola, Nigeria, Sudan and Zimbabwe. It analyses how the mutual cooperation has changed during these three different time periods and what has been the main components of China-Africa relationship. Primarily cooperation in the economic (foreign direct investments, foreign aid, balance of trade etc.), the political, but also the military sphere is analysed. The emphasis is also put on the Chinese status of a genuine alternative to the Western donor block, especially its policy of non- interference and aid without conditions. Diploma thesis also briefly touches on the approach of the traditional Western countries towards Africa (Washington versus Beijing Consensus). Positive and negative sides of mutual cooperation is also discussed.
Connection between notation and quality of consecutive interpretation
Svobodová, Petra ; Abdallaova, Naděžda (advisor) ; Čeňková, Ivana (referee)
The topic of notation, an important tool used in the process of consecutive interpretation, is discussed primarily in prescriptive works. Claiming that notes are a significant back-up for the interpreter's memory, the works suggest several principles that interpreters should observe in order to produce an optimal piece of notation. Nevertheless, detailed studies analyzing the influence of notes on the interpreter's performance are scarce. Many specialists have an unfavourable opinion of the possibility of an objective evaluation of interpretation quality; on the other hand, the interpreters' performance is subjected to day-by-day assessment by the market. In this area of research, it is difficult to carry out experiments and evaluation because of the small size of samples, unauthentic laboratory conditions and the individua! nature of both the notation and performance.
The analysis of Boris Antonenko-Davydovytch's of early novels
Svobodová, Petra ; Chlaňová, Tereza (advisor) ; Morávková, Alena (referee)
In my diploma I concentrate on the analysis of short stories by Boris AntonenkoDavydovych, the Ukrainian writer, whose works belong to the first half of the 20th century. I especially aim at Davydovych's prozaic works from the 1920s which had been affected by revolution changes and after-revolution-chaotic reality. First I introduce the literary process and time when the author was active and I chronologically name the sequence of Davydovych's prose. In the first chapter I analyze the single stories at large while focusing on the action that is later divided into partial chapters and focusing on the most important plots and expressive characteristics, I explore the composition issue, the characters themselves, time and space point of view and also the author's style, the method of his narration and his choice of lexical and figurative instruments. The second chapter concerns the topics of Davydovych's stories. His works from the 1920s map the historical topics of the World War I and the year 1905, the civil war and the famine in the years of 1921-23, the after-revolution reality. The third chapter focuses Davydovych's stylistic range that does not divert from realistic mantinels. Though his work is also influenced by revolutinary impressionism, neoromantism and symbolism. The fourth chapter deepens the view...
