Source authenticity and handling of photos in the printed newspapers MF Dnes and Lidové noviny
Boháčová, Anna ; Lábová, Sandra (advisor) ; Součková, Barbora (referee)
This Bachelor's thesis examines the topic of the change of photojournalism in the area of working with sources of photographs on title pages of printed journals in relation to the current standing of media both worldwide and in the Czech Republic. Its theoretical half introduces key concepts such as gatekeeping, agenda-setting, or reporter values, which affect the selection of media content during editorial routines. It then focuses on the field of photojournalism and the phenomena that change established standards due to the rise of the internet and digitisation. It specifies how the rise of participative journalism and multiskilling can change the work of photojournalists and in the end even the process of selecting a titular photograph. Afterwards, it describes the subject of study, which are the printed journals Mladá fronta and Lidové noviny. The practical half of the thesis then uses two methods to achieve valid findings. Quantitative content analysis is used to look at a research sample of photographs from title pages of the journal in three periods - years 2000, 2010, and 2019. Data are then described and illustrated using graphs. This information is then expanded upon using qualitative semi-structured interviews. The positive attitude of photojournalists towards manifestations of...
Navigating Narratives: Framing the Sino-Norwegian Relationship in Norwegian News Media since 2016
Solheim, Malene ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
in Czech Když Norsko v roce 2010 udělilo Nobelovu cenu za mír čínskému disidentu Liou Siao-povi, čínská vláda reagovala zmrazením diplomatických vztahů.
Analysis of product placement in Czech films from 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022
Holan, Ondřej ; Kruml, Milan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to confirm the assumption that with the advent of streaming services, Czech filmmakers will be forced to use product placement more often to increase their budgets after many viewers will go to the cinema less often. It was assumed that the products would be shown in the films in connection with the main character, who would actively use the item for a long time. The defined period for the research was between 2010 to 2022 in order to examine the effect of the enactment of product placement in Czech law and also to examine the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the film industry. The given time span was divided into five consecutive periods each three-years apart. Due to the number of films planned for analysis, the method of quantitative content analysis was used. A significant number of hypotheses have not been confirmed. Only the assumptions that there will be a noticeable increase in the frequency of product placement, an increase in the frequency of unique brands, an increase in the percentage ratio of dominant shot to the remaining shots, and a higher frequency of unique brands in films with lower budgets have been confirmed. The main reasons for the non-confirmation of hypotheses include a small research sample, comparing several periods at once, the situation...
The Role of Latin America in the Spanish Presidencies of the EU
Nováková, Martina ; Menclová, Barbora (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the role of Latin America in the Spanish presidencies of the European Union. Latin America and Spain have specific relations, and this thesis examines whether these relations are also projected on the European level through the Spanish presidencies. Part of the research is also EU-(CE)LAC summits, given that they took place during all the researched presidencies. The thesis examines what role Latin America played in the Spanish presidencies of the EU in the years 2002, 2010, and 2023 and how the role evolved throughout those years. The main research method used is comparison. The comparison is based on criteria that emerge from the analysis of the primary sources. These sources are mainly the official documents of the European Union, the programmes of the Spanish presidencies, the declarations of the EU- (CE)LAC summits, and speeches of the Spanish Prime Ministers. The research found that the programmes of the presidencies and the rhetoric of Spanish Prime ministers proved the gradually increasing importance of Latin America in the Spanish presidencies of the EU. However, the results of the presidencies and the results of the EU- (CE)LAC summits merely indicate this role but do not prove it. The overall summary of the thesis is that Latin America played...
Geopolitical risks and commodity prices: The case of Canadian recourse companies
Zhuk, Heorhiy ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Kočenda, Evžen (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of geopolitical risks and commodity prices on the stock returns and volatility of Canadian resource companies from 2004 to 2023, with a focus on the oil and energy sector, gold sector, and other minerals mining sector. Employing a comprehensive analysis of non-segmented and segmented data which has three distinct periods-2004-2009, 2010-2018, and 2019-2023-this study addresses the nuanced effects of geopolitical risk (GPR) in times marked by both economic stability and major global disruptions. The findings reveal that GPR significantly influences stock return volatility and mean equation, and also has a sector specific difference with oil and energy sector being the most effected one. The local Canadian GPR index was found to exert a more substantial impact on both the mean and volatility of stock returns compared to the global GPR index, emphasizing the importance of local geopolitical events in the Canadian market context. This thesis contributes to the empirical literature by highlighting the sector-specific responses to GPR and commodity price fluctuations, offering valuable insights for policymakers, regulators, and investors. It underscores the critical need for incorporating commodities in investment portfolios and adapting investment strategies to account...
The impact of the U.S. invasion on Iraqi education during 2003-2010
Jaškina, Anna ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This thesis examines how the 2003 US invasion reshaped Iraq's education system from 2003 to 2010, highlighting the pivotal role of education in the country's reconstruction. Beginning with Saddam Hussein's era, marked by politicized schools but also notable educational achievements in the 1980s, it subsequently delves into the disruptive effects of the Gulf War and UN sanctions on Iraqi society. The thesis then analyzes the upheaval caused by the invasion and occupation, particularly focusing on its repercussions for primary, secondary, and tertiary education, as well as its social impact on children and adolescents. Additionally, it evaluates the role of international humanitarian aid, with a specific focus on initiatives led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Ultimately, the thesis contends that while the US invasion significantly impacted Iraqi education, pre-existing conflicts and poorly executed reconstruction efforts compounded the challenges. It underscores the urgent need to prioritize the restoration of education and healthcare as fundamental steps towards rebuilding Iraqi society.
