Shape variability of proximal and distal human tibia.
Brzobohatá, Hana
The aim of this study was to detect and describe the trends in shape variability of proximal and distal human tibia related to sex, age, social status and time period. The variability of its shape and form was analysed first in an early medieval sample, then in two modern populations, an early 20th century sample and the contemporary Czech population. Finally, data from the whole studied time span were analysed. The initial raw data were acquired by optical scanning and computed tomography (CT) scanning of the lower limbs; the three-dimensional bone surfaces of the contemporary tibias were segmented from the clinical CT scan sequences. Geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistical methods were applied to study the variations in shape and form quantitatively. Proximal and distal tibias were evaluated independently, and the potential influence of sex, age at death and time period were investigated. In the early medieval population, we also explored the relationship between tibial morphology and presumed social status derived from the respective grave location within the settlement. Because traditional morphometric analysis revealed statistically significant sex differences in the parameters of both tibial extremities (e.g., Steyn and Işcan, 1997; Šlaus et al., 2013), we thus assumed the...
The Changing Legal and Social Status of the LGBT People in the U.S. Since 1990
Sochacký, Jakub ; Hervey, Norma (advisor) ; Young, Ralph (referee)
This paper deals with the role of American courts, specifically their decisions, regarding the rights and social status of LGBT people, which is an acronym standing for lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. The main finding is that court decisions in favor of LGBTs make lives of such people even more difficult, because authorities in states where such decisions are taken often try to circumvent these decisions using legislative powers. However, in the long term, it seems that courts manage to initiate debates about LGBT-related topics with various arguments that the American society is forced to consider. It appears that in such debates common sense prevails over prejudices and myths. One such myth that was widely accepted by society was that when a child lives with a homosexual in a common household, such child was going to become homosexual him- or herself. This paper also explores an analogy between current efforts of LGBT people to reach full equality and secure anti- discrimination measures for themselves and the struggle for civil rights of African-Americans. Both these groups have faced treatment which suggested that they are second-class citizens. One of the ways society expresses this second-class citizenry is by denying LGBTs access to the institution of marriage arguing it...

Černý, Jakub ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Moravec, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis presents an analysis of the communication in the TV program "Show of Jan Kraus". In the theoretical part we define and describe the term "talk show". A list of most popular programs of this type in Czech Republic is given for comparison. This part of the work contains also a chapter on medial dialog as a specific communication situation. We describe here a confrontation style, which is typical for the medial dialog in a talk show, a role of moderator and spectators, social status of the guests and also a question of politeness, which is the mains subject of the communication analysis in this work. The practical part is divided in two chapters. In the first one the show is analysed from the general point of view. We describe its structure, medial presentation, difference to other talk shows, and all its specific features. The second chapter deals with the question of communication, especially the performance of the moderator, Jan Kraus, and his way of discussion with the guests. The thesis investigates many points of a talk performance. The main point is the politeness, or rather impoliteness. The aim of the thesis is to find out, when this happens in the speech of the moderator, and which forms of the impoliteness are mostly used.
Attitudes towards unmarried mothers and their children in the Czech lands from a historical perspective
Kuprová, Barbora ; Hamplová, Dana (advisor) ; Šubrt, Jiří (referee)
The intention of this study is to approximate the attitude to children born out of marriage and their mothers in the years 1750-1849. The nominal excerpts from parish registers were used to find numbers of births and proportion of illegitimate children at the manor of Škvorec, the area located at the eastern border of Prague. The proportion of children born out of marriage is compared with contemporaneous regulations that could influence attitudes and behavior of contemporary society. The study also investigates the social status of born children, their fathers and godfathers. The results show that the position of unmarried mothers and their children has improved in the followed period. The results suggest that many unmarried mothers already lived with their partners in the companienate marriage in that time.

David Daneš Social Status Inconsistency in the Czech Republic: What does the first decade of 21st century suggest? Abstract This thesis deals with the multidimensional concept of social status and mainly with the phe- nomenon of unbalanced position at several stratification scales - social status inconsistency. The work provides a comprehensive overview of the use of this concept in foreign and subse- quently in the Czech sociology with background of interpretation of classical theoretical con- cepts and approaches to social stratification as such. Then the author's own analysis of data from the ISSP surveys is presented. Author refines existing research's results and also de- scribes the progress of the core metrics of status inconsistency in more than a decade, which for this purpose so far not been analyzed. Analysis based on the operationalisation established in the Czech sociology showed that rising trend of status consistency described by Czech au- thors in the nineties does not continue. Even the degrees of status consistency doesn't keep that level. There are two significant declines during the late nineties and around 2009, which are also decline in performance of the national economy (GDP) - the relationship of the two variables being tested.
