The Import and Distribution of Gramophone Records under the Normalization in Socialist Czechoslovakia
Andrs, Jiří ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Michela, Miroslav (referee)
This work engages in the import and distribution of the audio storages, concretely the gramophone records to Czechoslovakia. A gramophone record - differently to other audio storages like reel-to-reel tape records or later the cassettes - was meanwhile also an artefact that personified an attractive exoticness of the western world and because of its format and graphical elaboration it represented a valuable object of popular culture. The work is based on the assumption that the development of Czechoslovak musical subcultures depended largely on the distribution of gramophone records. That is why author focuses his attention on the unofficial import of the LP records by private persons. The very limited state-controlled import of this product will be also partly taken in account. An important question within this work is the import of the west-made music from other socialist states. In many of those countries licenses of those LPs were released much more often than in CSSR. Compared to the original western LPs it was easier for Czechoslovakian citizens to reach them - because of better possibilities to travel to socialist countries and yet because of a relatively low prices of eastern presses. Student also tries to revise the common notion (typical for both academic and non-academic sphere)...

The geographies of religion from a feminist perspective
Klingorová, Kamila ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Daněk, Petr (referee) ; Rochovská, Alena (referee)
This dissertation is based on the postsecularisation thesis which highlights the increasing role of religion nowadays. In the postmodern society, religion is understood not only as an objective truth, but also as the individual experience of a person. In relation to societal changes, a new paradigm has appeared - the new geographies of religion - which incorporates the individuality of a person into the discussion about religion in space. The study of religion as an individual experience could be significantly enhanced by feminist approaches which enable the inclusion of personal experiences. Therefore, the thesis contributes to the current direction of the geographies of religion connecting these with feminist approaches. The contribution of feminist approaches is assessed from the theoretical and empirical point of view. Feminist approaches develop themes of hierarchy, everydayness, emotionality, and embodiment, and thus contribute to the research on religion in a postsecular context. The empirical goal of the thesis is to consider the creation of sacred place and how religion frames the everyday experience of women. The thesis seeks to enrich Czech cultural geography with religious experience as another element forming space. The methodological framework uses the potential of a combination of...

Kotasová, Eva ; Marková, Alena (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee)
The present thesis deals with the media image of women's everyday life in the socialist era. It focuses on the period of time between 1970 and 1975, i.e. on the so called early normalization. The aim of the study is to find out in what way the everyday life of the given period is interpreted by the magazine Vlasta. The main value of the analysis is that it reveals the idealistic presentation of the socialist women's way of life, and their common problems and worries. The analysis of the articles we perform is focused on family and home care, child upbringing both at home and in institutions, man's role in the family, physical and mental health, cosmetics, fashion, etc., i.e. all the aspects belonging to and forming everyday life. Through these topics, which are popular among women, the magazine discreetly created the ideal of the socialist woman. In the messages concerned with everyday life it was passing on the values, stereotypes and even ideological principles of the socialist society of that time. The main aim of the analysis is to create a complex picture of this everyday practice in Vlasta magazine. Key words Everyday life, woman, socialisms, normalization, Vlasta magazine, family care, home care, child care

Zábrodská, Kristina ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (referee) ; Burešová, Jana (referee)
The doctoral thesis Gastronomy as a part of life style in the Czech national print media in the period between the wars in Czechoslovak Republic presents the results of eight years long research of food journalism in the Czech press between 1918 and 1938. This period called First Republic is often seen, due the positive sentiment, as a modern, democratic and prosperous state. The reality is a different. This text presents just a little part of picture of life style during First Republic which is gastronomy. That mirrors the economic and social level of the society. This text reflects critically the historical facts. The assumption, that print media pay regularly attention to the gastronomy as an integral part of life is important idea of this research. The content analysis proofs, that food journalism had its own section in the analyzed daily print, although media didn't used this kind of terminology. Five national newspapers (Lidové noviny, Národní politika, České slovo, Právo lidu and Venkov) were issued in the period 1918-1938 and newspapers Rudé právo established 1920 are included in the analysis. The selection of these (media) reflects the whole social-political spectrum of the audience. It could be assumed, that the selected newspapers represent the whole plurality of opinions. The analysis...
Period cuisine in the Czech reenactment depicting the period of the first half of the 14th century.
Svobodová, Alena ; Šalanda, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Štemberk, Jan (referee)
Traditionally, medieval cuisine belongs to the realm of historical or cultural anthropology, as the diet reflects the customs of different social classes, ethnic groups and religious regulations (fasting, kosher meals). Meals are part of ritual and change according to economic and social change. The present work deals in a somewhat unconventional way with the question of how period cuisine is cooked today. The increased interest in research on medieval everyday life and courtly society in the last two decades has expanded the level of knowledge of life at the time and made this information available to those interested in history from the general public. Few things are more everyday than the preparation and consumption of food. Yet today, as centuries ago, something as ordinary as cooking seems to have been pushed out of the main field of vision, off the stage on which history is performed. Or is it otherwise? Period cuisine is something more, it brings to life the roots of our eating habits, our culture, and then as now, the communal meal is the cement of the social group. The object of this paper is to introduce the reader to period cuisine of the first half of the 14th century, and to show the different approaches to period cooking at living history events as paths that, while sharing a common...
