The position of scene-setting adverbials in English and Czech. A comparison on the basis of parallel texts

The subject of the presented paper is the analysis of the position of scene-setting adverbials based on parallel texts. The aim of the study is to find out the most typical position for placing of such adverbials realized by verbless construction and to determine the factors influencing the position in both languages with respect to differences between the Czech and English word order. The theory is based on the functional approach described in Brno linguistic school and is applied to 200 examples from the corpus Intercorp. Out of the given number of examples, exactly one hundred tokens belong to the translation direction from En to Cz and the second half to the opposite direction of translation. With respect to the English word order, which takes over some of the grammatical functions resulting in relative rigidity, scene-setting adverbials are usually placed in the final position. However, it is assumed that most languages have a tendency to place the most important information to the end of the sentence. It follows that one of the goals of this work is to describe the factors allowing these adverbials to be placed in this position with no effect on the communicative dynamism of the adverbials themselves as well as on other sentence elements. Content analysis of men's lifestyle magazines

The aim of this study is to examine the contents of men's lifestyle magazines such as Maxim, Esquire, FHM, and one women's lifestyle magazine Glanc. The author used two analytical procedures: qualitative analysis by experts group and quantitative content analysis of sentences in the selected articles of the chosen magazines. The analysis pointed out the differences between the perception of content and the actual content. If the reader has some impression of the text, it does not mean that a more detailed analysis of sentences will reach the same conclusion. Effect of text is highly individual matter - this thesis came to the conclusion that although men's lifestyle magazines can be controversial for some people, upon closer examination the magazines cannot be clearly labeled as chauvinistic, cynical, ironic or tabloid. The author devoted to these categories in detail in the quantitative part of the analysis. Pragmatic and Stylistic Analysis of the Horoscopes in Periodicals

The thesis entitled "Pragmatic and stylistic analysis of the horoscopes in periodicals" deals with the horoscopes from linguistic point of view; the greatest attention is paied to the pragmatic and stylistic aspects. The goal of the thesis is to identify the typical features of horoscopes on the basis of pragmatic and stylistic analysis. The research material comprises of 1752 astrological predictions taken from sixteen different periodicals. The author and the recipient of horoscope are characterized in each chapter and selected attributes of the target group are studied in each chapter as well - age, gender, social roles and status. It is dealt with the intention of horoscopes; its impact on recipient and strategies used by authors of horoscopes are analyzed too. The thesis presents the way vocabulary and other language tools are used in horoscopes to communicate intention of their authors. The analysis also deals with themes of horoscopes.
Old Czech legends and their current treatment

Resumé The thesis is focused on the processing of old Czech legends in literature for children. The aim is to show how the writers adapted legend the children. The initial treatment the Old Czech Legends by Alois Jirásek. The theoretical part deals with legends, its types, legends in the folk tradition and legends in children's literature. The practical part is interpreted five books of legends from children's literature. Interpretation shows different ways that authors use to approach reputation child readers, or even shift the topic, if any. The conclusion summarizes the findings arising from the interpretation.

Theoretical part consists of the given list of authors I was inspired by or about the production of the authors I was inspired by. Next theme of the theoretical part of the work is about the relationship of the human and the landscape and about their positive as well as negative interface. Practical part of the work contains packet of sketches which displayed the detail of figure in the public transport, "tryptich" of paintworks with the group of people and some presentation of my own photographs by the help of use of templates. The Left and the Right in MF Dnes and Právo (how both newpapers define, depict and present the left nad the right 6 weeks before general elections in 2010

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the front pages of two main Czech newspapers - MF Dnes and Pravo. The front pages are analyzed six weeks before the General elections in 2010. The thesis aims to specify how each newspaper defines and informs about the left-wing and right-wing politics and which topics does it connect with both spectrums. Dissertation also touches the political aspect of the definition of the left and the right with a respect to historical development of both spectrums. Afterwards the dissertation compares both newspapers and tries to figure out, in what topics they differ when defining the left and the right wing. The analysis approaches both newspapers the same objective way, not looking at their political inclination.

Taboo and noa in communication. Realization of linguistic taboos in the print media. This thesis deals with issues of the taboo and noa in language and communication. The core of this thesis is to identify the essential tabooed themes in contemporary society and ways of their linguistic realization in the print media. In the theoretical part of this thesis is the first explained substance of the terms such as taboo, noa, communication and linguistic taboos with regard to the interrelations between these terms. In the empirical part are then defined tabooed themes occurring in the concrete texts of the diary Mladá fronta DNES and Blesk and of the periodical Rytmus života and ways of their linguistic grasping. The thesis focuses above all on the manifestations of speech restrictions in the lexical plan of the language.
