Epistemic and root possibility meanings of can and may in written English
Remešová, Petra ; Dušková, Libuše (advisor) ; Hornová, Magdalena (referee) ; Klégr, Aleš (referee)
The study is concerned with the English modal auxiliaries CAN and MAY and their morphologically past tense forms COULD and MIGHT.1 It is essentially a small-scale corpus-based investigation into possibility meanings of these modal auxiliaries in contemporary written British English, taking account of stylistic variation. The investigation focuses on assigning appropriate readings to contextualized occurrences of modal auxiliaries and is thus primarily based on discussions of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. The study attempts to present a general account of possibility senses of CAN/COULD and MAY/MIGHT and reviews the issues relating to their use and distribution on the basis of a semantic and quantitative analysis. However, frequency of occurrence is meant to provide merely a supplementary view of the qualitative analysis, focusing on the role of context in interpreting modal meanings. Among the modal-specific questions that the treatise addresses are those concerning modal semantics, syntactic co-occurrence patterns, stylistic variation, and pragmatic inferencing. It is important to note that the study does not attempt to provide an exhaustive and systematic semantic description of CAN/COULD and MAY/MIGHT. Based on interpreting particular contextualized occurrences, it primarily investigates...

Diploma thesis "Vliv řízeného tréninku na habituální pohybovou aktivitu pacientů s diabetes mellitus 2. typu" in the theoretical part deals with Type 2 diabetes (DM2T), its complications and possibilities of its therapy. Emphasis is put on physical activity as the main non-pharmacological mean influencing insulin resistance. Furthermore, we examine habitual physical activity, meaning energy expenditure in daily activities. The objective of the practical part of this thesis is to determine the level of habitual physical activity of DM2T patients and to show how it is influenced by stationary bicycle exercises. The impact of regular physical activity on the health indicators, physical fitness and anthropometric parameters, is examined. The sample of patients includes 20 individuals with DM2T, who have completed insulin therapy and currently are cured with peroral antidiabetics and regime measures. Pedometer and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) are used in order to monitor habitual physical activity. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Theatre criticism in the magazine "Divadlo" ("The Tbeatre") in 1953
Kunderová, Radka ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Herman, Josef (referee)
This master thesis deals with a so far not explored area - a detailed analysis of the Czech theatre review criticism under the totalitarian communistic regime. The criticism in the magazíne "Divadlo" (1949 - 1970), the main theatre periodical in the fifties (from 1957 together with "Divadelní noviny" ("The Theatre Newspaper")) has been chosen as a sample. The analysis focuses on the year 1953 when the Soviet dictator J. V. Stalin and the Czech president Klement Gottwald died and that is why this year is generally identified with the first liberalization in Czechoslovakia as well as in the other Sovietized states. The aim of the master thesi s was not only to precisely describe the reviews, but also to find out, whether they changed after these fundamental events in the political and social development. The essay consists of two basic parts: the first one handles the historical context, both the social and in the area of theatre, resumes the history of the magazine "Divadlo" and shortly describes the theory and history of social realism unti11953. The second part focuses on the detailed qualitative analysis ofthe texts. The chapters about history show briefly the character of the theatre sphere which hinged on the policy ofthe state and the Communist Party. The magazine "Divadlo" was created one year after...

"The reception of Robert Paxton's book La France de Vichy by French press and French academic community"
