Sexual and excretory vocabulary and contexts of its usage in Romani
Dužda, Jan ; Beníšek, Michael (advisor) ; Kubaník, Pavel (referee)
This thesis deals with usage of special vocabulary - "sexual and excretion" - in different contexts in a Roma community in Rokycany. This thesis is actually analysis and it focuses on searching for equivalences and differences in Romani language. The author compares these expressions with Czech language as well. The sexual and excretion vocabulary is used in different contexts and it is often used in tabooed situations. The usage of those linguistic instruments depends on a speaker's status in the community. Final section of bachelor thesis analyses the presence of sexual and excretory vocabulary in different realms of Roma art. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Analysis of Crisis Communication in Retail Chains
Pralovszká, Sára ; Ivan, Michal (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on an analysis of crisis communication in food retail chains, using pragmatic linguistic methods. In the theoretical part I deal with speech acts theory from the viewpoint of John L. Austin and Emile Benveniste, Grice's Cooperative Principles and the Theory of Argumentation. I use all these methods in analyzing press releases published by retail chains in the case of a negative food affair. I am therefore interested in the way those linguistic tools are used by the authors in the press releases in order to communicate most effectively in a time of crisis, so as to prevent the loss of either costumers or the good name of the company. I will also focus on the most frequent mistakes made by the authors of press releases. The aim of my thesis is to find out whether it is possible to find some repetitive mechanisms used in the communication of different crisis topics. The main hypothesis is that although there are different crisis situations which need to be communicated, communication methods used in individual press releases are similar and they often recur. Key words: pragmatics, speech acts, cooperative principles, argumentation, crisis communication, food affair, press release.

Mašková, Tereza ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Hejlová, Denisa (referee)
This diploma thesis Comparative analysis of communication of the brands Louis Vuitton and Estée Lauder across selected periodicals in 2013 deals with the forms of communication the selected luxury brands on the platform of magazines use for addressing their existing and also potential customers. The theoretical part defines luxury and luxury brands Louis Vuitton and Estée Lauder and media, namely printed magazines Elle and Marianne, which together constitute the necessary basis for the subsequent research. Methodological part looks at the key persuasive, semiotic and pragmatic approaches, which, using verbal and non-verbal communication elements, participate in the construction of the examined texts, and submits related basic concepts, which are then used in the analytical part. Here, first, is realized a detailed description and analysis of the selected types of communication followed by the comparison and final evaluation of the findings obtained. Comparison in that is made not only within the individual magazines, respectively types of utterances placed in them, but also in connection with the specifics of the selected luxury brands. This diploma thesis aims to describe the selected utterances, analyze the contents they communicate, compare them and finally reveal the key communication methods...
Parental experience with children with language impairment
Podpěrová, Helena ; Kucharská, Anna (advisor) ; Špačková, Klára (referee)
This bachelor thesis processes the data that was collected using a questionnaire Children's Communication Checklist - 2 (CCC-2), which was developed by D. V. M. Bishop (2003) and adapted version was administered by parents of children with specific language impairment (SLI) and children of intact (I) within the project ELDEL that at European level engaged in the development of language and literacy skills. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of the questionnaire to distinguish between children with specific language impairment and typically developing peers. The main task was to compare two groups and to determine whether in single subscale of questionnaire, in total composites scores and between them there is a statistically significant difference. The sample consisted of two groups of 77 children of preschool age (5-6 years). She performed a quantitative analysis of the data, based on which it was found that among the groups there are statistically significant differences. For a more detailed analysis of the particular subscale in the checklist and mapping of the differences between them were used item analysis. The conclusions of the analysis are discussed in the context of the theoretical base, of current scientific findings, the possible limits and any possibilities for further...
Court interpreting as a communication process
Švábová, Kateřina ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Čeňková, Ivana (referee)
The aim of this study is to contribute to the existing knowledge about court interpreting in the Czech Republic, focusing on court interpreting as a communication process. The study brings an overview of findings on court interpreting in both the international and Czech context, particularly regarding the definition of court interpreting, its professionalization, institutionalisation, academisation and the fields of research. It subsequently details the specific issues regarding court interpreting in the Czech Republic, i.e. the entities connected with court interpreting, formal conditions of working as a court interpreter, the relevant legislation and ethical codex in the field of court interpreting, the court interpreter's job in practice and a focus on interpreting during criminal trials. Furthermore, the study looks into communicative situations, forms of interpreting, the process of the trial in criminal procedures and the participants in communicative events. The core part of the study includes three case studies conducted on the basis of authentic recordings and the transcription of relevant parts of the interpreted trials in criminal procedures. Each case study consists of a communicative situation analysis, contrastive structural analysis and pragmatic and interaction analysis. These...
TV-debate - argumentation and persuasion: Václav Moravec questioning's case study
Jelínková, Barbora ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Šoltys, Otakar (referee)
The diploma thesis presents own research method for examination of speech formations. It focuses on examination of televised political debates. The method applied here may be characterized as an organized hermeneutic analysis of political discourse. Through the application of an analytical - philosophical approach (e.g. application of the theory of maxima, illocutionary acts evaluation, and analysis of arguments and verification of their truthfulness), the method allows us to establish objective facts of the debate as well as some personal features of debate participants. To examine texts, the theoretical knowledge of distinguished authors (J. J. Austin, K. Bayer, T. A. van Dijk, N. Fairclough, H. P. Grice, J. Habermas, J. Kraus, G. N. Leeche, J. R. Searl, and others) have been made use of. In addition to the literary survey, the thesis also includes the argumentation in respect of selection of the method, selection of talk shows, transcript of debates from TV records, transformation of the text into an analysable form, and research methodology. Accordingly, a specific communication model of programme is drawn up, the talk show discourse is analysed as a whole, and the styles and argumentation of selected participants are examined and analysed, which is followed by a comprehensive assessment of the...
Politeness in Danish in Comparison with Czech
Halamíčková, Zuzana ; Štajnerová, Petra (advisor) ; Hartlová, Dagmar (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to compare linguistic means of expressing politeness in Czech and in Danish. The term politeness covers both norms defining socially acceptable behaviour and strategies that speakers use to achieve their goals and avoid conflicts. After defining the term politeness, I briefly introduce the most influential theoretical approaches to politeness since the 1960s. The second chapter brings an overview of linguistic means of expressing politeness in Czech and in Danish. The last, most comprehensive part of the thesis is concerned with selected areas typically connected to politeness, i.e. greetings and forms of address, expressing thanks and reacting to them, orders, bans, and requests. In Czech, a polite request usually contains the particle prosím (please). This word has no equivalent in spoken Danish; however, Danish speakers can make use of other expressions, such as particles godt, nok, lige and vel, or the expression vil du være sød/venlig (would you be so kind). They can also use some of the conventional means of expressing a request indirectly. Many of those strategies are common to both languages, especially formulating the requests as a question, perhaps in a negative form. Polite requests in Czech are characterized by the use of conditional, Danish requests typically...
A contrastive study of hyperbole in Czech and English. A corpus-based study
Macháčková, Anežka ; Klégr, Aleš (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee)
The aim of this study is to compare and contrast the use of hyperbole or exaggeration in spoken Czech and English language. The research is based on comparative approach to two samples accounting for 100 hyperbolic instances in Czech and 100 instances of hyperbole in English. The Czech sample has been randomly excerpted from the oral part of the Czech National Corpus ORAL2008, whereas the English sample has been randomly excerpted from the "spoken context-govern" and "spoken demographic" sections of The British National Corpus. The two samples are subject to analysis. Firstly, the formal realization of hyperbole is examined. Secondly, the occurrences are classified semantically (quantitative versus qualitative hyperbole) and, thirdly, the lexico-semantics is examined (hyperbolic source domains). By this, the present study tests the hypothesis of universal hyperbolic source domains by examining the situation in Czech and English. Finally, the occurrence of conventionalized instances of hyperbole as opposed to creative instances of hyperbolic nonce-usages is examined. Last but not least, it is the aim of this study to provide the overall frequency figures of hyperbole in both languages.
Power of Language in "To Respect and To Be Respected" educational method
Fialová, Lucie ; Šafaříková, Radana (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the power of language and the relation between language and thought, perception and experience. The topic is viewed through the "Respektovat a být respektován" (To Respect and To Be Respected) educational method. The main assumption of this method is that the way the parent communicates with the child affects educational success as well as the behaviour of the child and the values and attitude he or she will have as an adult. This premise is empirically tested by interviews with parents and observations in families, which show how the specific way of communication (which is based on particular grammatical and pragmatic rules) influences the behaviour and experience of both the child and the parent.
