Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling
Pavlíček, Milan ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Činátlová, Blanka (referee)
Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling covers the six stories of the Star Wars series in relation to Emil Volek's story model whose terminology and story typology is used to describe how the stories influence one another, which is to say, how the stories influence the reception of the other stories in the series and how the reception has changed over time. The diploma thesis also examines how myth is being applied to Star Wars and reflects whether such connection is justified. Both Star Wars and myth are given a definition and the relationship between the series and Joseph Campbell's monomyth, a concept frequently connected to Star Wars, is explored. The final part of the text describes narrative elements and processes participating in the creation of the original trilogy. An appendix covers various issues in regard to the translation of the series into Czech and briefly evaluates existing translations.

Dvořák, Ondřej ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
Thesis is based on the views of authors of sociology of knowledge (Berger, Luckman, Bourdieu) and authors of discourse analysis (Foucault, Fairclough). The central assumption is that knowledge is socially constructed and that this construction has its strong ideological and hierarchic aspects. Author is analyzing books and texts of Vaclav Klaus using the critical discourse analysis. Author is convinced that Vaclav Klaus has a substantive influence on public opinion in Czech Republic. Also author is convinced the struggle in the discussion over environmental topics is based in different basic assupmtions of discussion participant. Thus author decided to analyse the Vaclav Klaus's basic assumptions for the notions of nature and environment.
Le Corbusier's Architectural and Urban Visions in perspective of Semiology
Štěpánková, Anna ; Marcelli, Miroslav (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
of Diploma Thesis "Le Corbusier's architectural and urban visions in a semiological perspective The subject of this thesis is a semiological analysis of Le Corbusier's text Towards a New Architecture. It methodologically follows semiological conceptions of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes. The main methodological source is a work of French theoretician of architecture and urbanism François Choay, The Rule and the Model (1997), in which she has stated three paradigms, which according to her, influenced forming of modern urbanism as an autonomous science: genre of architectural treatise, utopia and scientific discourse. For each of these discursive forms she has identified characteristic signs. Le Corbusier is considered as a symbol of modern movement of architecture and urbanism, who broke away from an old tradition and brought to realm of architecture and urbanism a new insight. The fundamental question of this thesis is, whether this innovative approach could be found also in his texts, in the manner how Le Corbusier wrote about architecture and urbanism, or whether Le Corbusier followed an old tradition. This question should be answered in the course of searching for the signs of mentioned paradigms postulated by F. Choay.
Media Presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI.
Pániková, Klára ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. in the Czech press. We arise from the assumtion that the way the Czech press writes about the present Pope is set by a certain discourse. That is why we use the method of dicourse analysis designed by Michel Foucault. Having carefully analysed altogether 690 articles from selected newspapers and magazines published between 02/04/2005 and 31/12/2007 we reached a number of fragmental results which in the end turned to be the parts of the searched for discourse. In so doing some hidden motives, which seem to form an esential part of the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI., emerged. Along with that the absence of the journalists' ability to assess the proper meaning of some words or to lay proper stresses appeared too. As this thesis brings out, the journalists are at the same time impossible to take a step forward in this as their way of thinking about the Pope is set by the discourse (that they themselves first created). So, we came to the conclusion that the media presentation of the Pope Benedict XVI. is influenced by, e.g. stereotypes we Czechs have about the German nationality or artificially (by journalists) connected events in Benedict's life. We also show that the present Pope is a very good object of...

Keřka, Ondřej ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
Perception of the Russian Threat in the Czech Political, and Administrative Discourse Abstract The goal of this diploma thesis is to find how the Russian threat is perceived in the Czech political, and administrative discourse. The author decided to use constructivism, and discourse analysis to achieve the goal. Concretely he was inspired by Teun A. van Dijk's approach. The author chose actors, which in his opinion are the most important for shaping of the Russian threat construct in the Czech political, and administrative discourse. There are two categories of chosen actors. First category is composed of relevant institutions: The President of the Czech Republic, and his office, and The Government of the Czech Republic. The author chose five sub-actors to represent the government: The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Ministry of the Defence and Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, and Ministry of Industry and Trade. Second category is aimed on parliamentary political parties, and movements in the Chamber of Deputies. The discourse could be characterized like fragmented. Chosen institutions mostly recognize possibility of Russian threatening behavior. They do not perceive any military threat for the Czech...
Reflection of “otherness” in international relations
Kvašňák, Daniel ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (advisor) ; Doležal, Tomáš (referee)
The current migration crisis has put significant strain on the European Union and its member states. Immigration has always been a contentious issue in societies, most often facing significant opposition. By drawing on postmodern theories of international relations and Discourse Theory, this paper analyses how immigration is being increasingly securitized by the European Union and its member states along with what makes securitization the hegemonic discourse. This is done primarily with reference to identity construction through the framing of the Other, in this case the migrant, as an unwanted and externalized element. Furthermore, the paper details how the framing of the migrant as a threat to the internal security of a country strenghtend identity politics across Europe. Finally, using the Brexit campaign in the UK, the paper analyzes how the rise in identity politics in turn raises the possibility of a successful fusion of the anti-immigration discourse with the anti-EU discourse through the exploiting of societal unease.
Soft power a zahraniční politika: nepodceňjeme nedemokratické státy?
Slavíková, Kamila ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Halimzai, Pamir (referee)
A part of academic work inspired by Nye's concept of "soft power" has adopted his conceptualisation without much reservation, while another part has contested it. Some authors describe Nye's conceptualisation of power as biased towards democracies, or otherwise challenge the concept as category of analysis. On the case study of the partial democracy of Singapore, through analysis of official discourse, the thesis explores whether Singapore's government acknowledges the idea and if so, how it interprets it. Secondly, the thesis aims to provide more insight into the use of soft power as category of analysis with the help of the selected case study.

The Expulsion of Germans Thematized in Present Czech Prose
KRLÍN, Jan
The thesis deals with the problem of the expulsion of Germans in Czech literature, particularly in novels such as Stain/Stigma, The Expulsion of Gerta Schnirch, and Lost Children. All these three works were published after 1989 and thus are not influenced by a socialist discourse. They pit, on the contrary, against it and in the way of describing the theme they follow up The Divine Rainbow by Jaroslav Durych and Adelheid by Vladimír Körner. The expulsion is relatively often reflected. Starting with Anna Sedlmayerová, through Václav Řezáč, Vladimír Körner, Zdeněk Šmíd, and finishing with Kateřina Tučková. Each of them approaches this theme in their individual way. Řezáč in the spirit of his time-discourse, which he co-creates with his work; Durych and Körner rail against Řezáč's conception; Šmíd and Tučková both feel a personal need to give their opinion, as the expulsion partly touches them and speaks to them through the land and the town. The identity of literary characters is in large measure defined by the time-discourse, in which the work originates, and the discourse of the period, which is depicted. Two types of influence arise from this. The part of the discourse is folk myths, transformed and modified for several times, so they can be used for particular aims and a particular period. How influential for the literary discourse of the expulsion were the myths created is going to be clear from the conclusions. Similarly I will try to answer the question how far are the discourse and the formation of the identity of literary characters in interpreted works tied to each other.
