Drug-resistance in parasitic helminths
Mertová, Petra ; Szotáková, Barbora (advisor) ; Boušová, Iva (referee)
Charles University in Prague Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Biochemical Science Candidate: Petra Mertová Supervisor: Doc. Ing. Barbora Szotáková, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Drug-resistance in parasitic helminths The development of drug resistance in parasitic helminths poses a large threat to productivity in livestock and the control of human helminths in future. Currently there are three broad spectrum classes of anthelmintics: the benzimidazoles, the imidazothiazoles (levamisole) and the tetrahydropyrimidines (pyrantel, morantel), the macrocyclic lactones (avermectins and milbemycins). Benzimidazoles act by specific binding to parasites β-tubulin, resistance in this class of anthelmintics appears to be associated with mutations in β-tubulin genes. Resistance to levamisol or pyrantel, drugs which act as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, is probably caused by amount reduction or by loss of affinity in these receptors. Macrocyclic lactones mode of action is not fully understood, but there appears to be relation with modulating glutamate-gated chloride channels present on muscle membranes of the parasites. Recent studies revelead that P-glycoprotein and others ATP transporters are involved in anthelmintic resistance. Modes of action and factors influencing the...

Studies of NK cell receptors and other proteins using recombinant expression and mass spectrometry

Charles University in Prague Faculty of Science Department of Biochemistry Studies of NK cell receptors and other proteins using recombinant expressions and mass spectrometry Summary of Ph. D. Thesis Daniel Kavan Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Karel Bezouška, DSc. Prague 2010 Daniel Kavan Introduction Introduction NK cells and CD69 as one of their surface receptors Natural killer cells (NK cells) are the subpopulation of large granular lymfocytes, which lacks the surface receptors typical for B cells or T cells. They are characterized by the presence of NKp46 and NKp30 [Moretta L. et. al. 2002], however. They were named natural killers according to their function in the organism, as they do not need any activation and nevertheless they are able to eliminate abnormal (i. e. infected or transformed) cells from the tissue [Kiessling R. et. al. 1975]. This function is dependent on scanning the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules of ambient cells. The resulting action (killing or not killing the target cell) is dependent on the balance of activating and inhibiting signals mediated by the NK cell surface receptors and forwarded to the specific signaling pathway [Raulet D. H. et. al. 2001]. Specificity of NK cells is not based only on one type of antigen receptor as it is in case of T and B cells,...

Chmelíčková, Hana ; Daďová, Klára (advisor) ; Levitová, Andrea (referee)
Title: Balance-related excercise as a preparation to cross-country skiing practice in visually impaired children. Objectives of the Thesis: The goal of this thesis is to test the possibilitiy of implementation of selected balance- related excercise in visually impaired children. Method: The testing pool consisted of six pupils attending the Special school for Visually Impaired Children between 14 and 15 years of age. Over the period of ten weeks, selected exercise geared towards the cross-country skiing was practiced with these students. The research method applied to measure students' indicators of balance before and after the excercise was an assessment of standing stability at the Footscan pressure table, as well as a walking test in terrain with blinded eyes. Results and Conclusions: This research has indicated the possibility of physical intervention in form of balance- related practice as part of the preparation before the cross-country skiing season begins. It has proven that selected balance-related excercise can be applied with no limitations during the physical education classes for visually impaired pupils. After the physical intervention, the majority of tested individuals showed improvements in their indicators of dynamic balance, as proved by the walking test in terrain with blinded...

Jan Dlask, Ph.D. Number of pagess: 68 Nubmber of characters: 118 580 Keywords: Charles Darwin, darwinism, social darwinism, Finnish Literature, race, heredity, social class This diploma deals with evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin and examines its arrival to Finland, its spreading there and mentions the first references in the Finnish periodicals, public and especially in literature during 1860-1920. The topic is viewed through a cultural-historical context which consists of influences of evolutionary theories, social darwinism, racial theories, heredity research, or distinctions between social classes. The special emphasis is placed on reflections of the main aspects of this context in the Finnish literature, mainly in the works of Minna Canth, T. Pakkala, L. Onerva, Toivo Tarvas and Maila Talvio.

Atomic analysis as the tool for understanding mental operations of students
Nuslová, Veronika ; Hejný, Milan (advisor) ; Jirotková, Darina (referee)
The aim of this thesis is familiarization with the atomic analysis method. The historical development of the method, its current use and the author's practical experience together enable a comprehensive conception of the method to be formed. A substantial part of the thesis consists of an experiment with six fourth grade pupils resulting in three distinct outputs. First, a survey of the historical development of atomic analysis. Second, educational material processed in Microsoft Class Server, which has already been used and will continue being made use of in training primary school teachers at the Faculty of Education at Charles University in Prague. Third, a demonstration of the atomic analysis of a specific video recording and accompanying written material obtained from the experiment. Keywords: atomic analysis, students' mistakes and misconceptions, constructivist approach, combinatorics, experiment

Absoption in mathematics and orientation towards mathematics
Kmínková, Eliška ; Rendl, Miroslav (referee) ; Pavelková, Isabella (advisor)
In the beginning of my dissertation me and my supervisor set out several objectives. We concerned ourselves on incentives factores acting prejudice in favour of mathematics and incite orientations for mathematics as well. Various kinds of interests (individual, situational, actual, special-interest), achievement motivation, flow experience and perceived capability for mathematics. We prepared two various lessons of mathematics for the students in graduation class of gymnasium - the first one conventional, the second one experimental, alternative method. We concerned ourselves in students' preferences - which classwork is convenient to successful 1 sudents in mathematics and which one to students which go badly in maths. Next objectiv was observing the group of students "orientated on mathematis", preparing themselves for leaving examination in mathematics and preparing themselves for study in faculties where is this subject is one of the major. What influences the love for mathematics? Situation interest - we took of both from lessons comparison by the students and of their flow experience during lessons. Students' flow experience was almost similar in both lessons, though a little bit better flow experience had students in conventional lesson. The students has been enquired which kind of lesson was better...

A third type of antiviral compounds is represented...

Personal management of university students
Dejmalová, Lenka ; Starý, Karel (advisor) ; Šebková, Helena (referee) ; Matošková, Jana (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to explore the first-year undergraduates' strategies of self-management. The thesis contains the theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part deals with the transformation of higher education in Europe and in the Czech Republic followed by the changes in the university student career and lifestyle. Special attention is devoted to university socialization, the personality of the university student and their new roles. The next chapter of the theoretical part presents the concepts of personal management and academic self-management. Effective and successful university study and personal strategies of self-management then appear to be interdependent. The aim of the qualitative research is to explore and describe how the first-year students organize their study. Firstly, the content analysis of selected study plans was carried out and the orientation questionnaire survey was conducted among 165 first-year students at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Later, also other methods were applied: the diary of study week and electronic interviews. The data were analysed through open coding and thematic coding. Two basic types of students were distinguished based on the dominant out-of-class activities and the diversity of tendencies in independent...
