Fights of Roma Teenagers Cultural Models of Violence
Trachtová, Zuzana ; Bittnerová, Dana (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
This thesis focuses on the meaning of violence within groups of Roma youth. It discusses questions regarding how they understand, verbalise and reflect on violence. Answers to these questions presented in the work are based on long-term communication with Roma teenagers visiting a low-threshold club, where I worked. Afterwards, the research was carried out outside the club, in their private space and also in a boxing club. The Roma teenagers formed a fixed group, identifying themselves with a particular Prague district. The dialogues revealed an interesting topic of "fights" among Roma groups coming from different Prague districts. The aim of the thesis is to provide answers to the questions what teenagers are actually saying when they are talking about "fighting" one another, how they assess such behaviour and what meanings it carries for them. The theoretical part presents definitional frameworks concerning the term of violence as well as the concept of physical violence appearing in different socio-scientific contexts. In literature, violence is often referred to in connection with young people, gender, masculinity, social exclusion and honour. Furthermore, this part concentrates on defining the Roma minority and outlining their situation in Prague and the Czech Republic. The theoretical and...
Facebook and Instagram as a part of teenagers' lifestyle - Qualitative study on how teenagers use social networks as a part of their daily lives
Svobodová, Lucie ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on social networks and the role they play in the lives of teenagers. My aim was to provide insight into teenagers' worlds on Facebook and Instagram. The first part provides a theoretical basis for my research and summarizes foreign research on this topic. The second part describes the research methodology that has been performed in this thesis, in addition to the sample who participated in this research. Finally the results of this research are compared with research of foreign authors. The main research question was "What are the motivations of teenagers to use social networks and how do teenagers represent themselves in these surroundings?" The next research questions focused on privacy concerns and whether teenagers take their own safety into consideration when using Facebook and Instagram. My research demonstrates that electronic social networks are primarily used by teenagers as a means of maintaining contact with their peer group rather than making new social connections. Though social networks such as Facebook and Instagram play a primary role in teenagers' social interactions, there are many privacy risks that are not easily accessible to teenagers and present long-term challenges for their electronic presence. It is important to emphasize that the results of my research...

Patterns of usage of online social network Facebook: a psychographic analysis
Pokorný, Daniel ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
In this diploma thesis I explore the topic of publics on online social networking sites. I also focused on how the concept of publics affects how users behave and present themselves on online social networking sites, taking Facebook as an example. Identity management is an extensively researched area. However, less attention is paid to understanding the ways how users define their audience and how precise such a concept can actually be. In this thesis I set to understand how teenagers think and conceptualize different types of audiences they may encounter and how such imagined audience influences the way they use Facebook. Since this is a topic considerably difficult to think of let alone speak about, especially for young people, I chose projective techniques used in a focus group to overcome these obstacles. Using this method I tried to get answers on the research questions and obtain an insight as to how people imagine their audiences on online social networking sites, what are the most prominent types of users, and how it affects, in turn, their usage of Facebook. A similar type of research can be conducted also for other groups of online social networking sites users as well as for other online social networking sites. The next possible step can be a quantitative study assessing the stated...
