Epilepsy impact on quality of life in women

This thesis looks into the concept of the quality of life in women with epilepsy from a qualitative perspective. Epilepsy, as is a chronic neurological disease, affects not only everyday activities after the diagnosis, but also has its impact on the women's life regarding employment or family. By adapting the narrative analysis this thesis categorizes the influential factors of this concept into primary and secondary ones. Moreover, it explores in detail the issue of obtaining a driving license, which is one of the specifics of the people with epilepsy in Czechia. Also, it defines the respondents' attitudes toward the societal perception of epilepsy and fears that accompany it. In addition to that, the matter of motherhood and pregnancy for women with epilepsy is explored as one of the influential factors of the quality of life. Lastly, this thesis argues that the qualitative approach is essential for the initial examination of the selected sample for future investigations regarding the concept of the quality of life in epilepsy.
Intergenerational construction of perception of poverty within families

This bachelor thesis deals with the study of the concept of poverty and its perception across two generations. This is among those who grew up in the socialism and their descendants who grew up after the transformation. The work aims to describe the intergenerational constructions of perceptions of poverty within families, to further analyze whether the concept of poverty differs between two different generations and, if so, on what these differences is based. Qualitative research is focused on middle-class Prague families, where using semi- structured interviews and the method of projective techniques I find out the attitude of respondents in the perception of the concept of poverty and their narratives associated with it. I use the research work of sociologists and anthropologists A. Schütz, M. Buchowski, M. Kreidl and R. Inglehart as theoretical starting points for qualitative interviews. The theory and data are then analyzed by a combination of narrative and thematic analysis. The main finding of this work is the importance of personal experience with poverty, which influences the further formation of the discourse on poverty.
Transforming life experience: proposal of a conceptual framework and approach to analysis

This contribution outlines a conceptual framework and analytic tools to be used in research of how people experience crises and growth in their middle age. The starting point is narrative hermeneutic approach. Transformative experience is treated in terms of a ‘story of change’, which emerges from narrative enactment (biographical work). Key concepts are ‘trouble’ and ‘narrative transformation’, which is what narrative does with the trouble. In analysis of crisis and growth in middle age, we employ categories of narrative analysis: transformation, agency, values and convictions, reflectivity and narrative positioning. The proposed conceptual framework and analysis are illustrated using examples from previous studies (stories of change in the course of psychotherapy).
Intertextuality in Game of Thrones series

This diploma thesis deals with intertextuality in Game of Thrones series from the academic perspective. The thesis presents a comprehensive summary of selected intertexts including their classification according to the different types of semantic connection. The theoretical frame is based on the theoretical approaches of leading intertextuality theorists in literature and culture in general. In addition, it reflects the position of Game of Thrones series in the cultural mainstream, both in regards of its popularity and dissapointment of viewers over the final series. Based on national and international critical reviews, this diploma thesis analyzes the genre changes in Game of Thrones and focuses especially on the shared features with the soap opera genre. The fantasy genre specifics and its possible influence on reality is also briefly described. The methodological part summarizes the analytical tools and formulates research questions. Realism in the Czechoslovak crime films from 60's (with the emphasis on the figure of criminalist and criminalistic methods)

Films and series with criminal themes are very popular among audience. They also have quite a long tradition in the Czech (Czechoslovak) cinematography. Specifically in the 60's a lot of quality films with detective plots were made and they are appreciated among the audience until today. They are also repeated in television frequently. These films demonstrate both crime and further investigation, focused on the police activity. This representation is frequently portrayed as a reality and the audience tend to view it as such. Therefore, it is interesting to observe if this representation corresponds to real forensic practice. This diploma thesis deals with the given matter. It analyses five Czechoslovak crime films from the 60's and its goal is to determine if the forensic methods correspond to then reality. It also focuses on the figure of the investigator as the representative of the law and as the main character. The first part of the thesis is comprised of the theoretical background. It describes the principles of film narrathology and mainly the principles of forensic methodology and practice. The second part of the thesis is practical. The theoretical background is applied here to analyse each of the chosen films. The summary responds to the research question and summarizes results of the analysis.
What accounts for successful aging? – A dialogical self view

From the psychological perspective, older adults who are unsuccessful in aging (experiencing, for instance, depression, low well-being, or low life satisfaction) have been often considered unable to accept their own past including life losses. However, such an explanation may be too trivial. For example, an inability to accept the past may be a natural component of depressive thinking and not a separate variable that accounts for depression. Unsuccessful aging can alternatively be explained by focusing on processes of meaning construction of various aspects of one’s own life. The theory of the dialogical self describes these processes in terms of the development of an internal dialogue. An aging-successful older adult should develop a lifereviewing internal dialogue with adaptive features, such as differentiation or integration of various and often contradictory „I-positions.” Methods: Narrative analyses based on the theory of the dialogical self were applied to Life Story Interviews with 32 older adults (aged from 70 to 93 years). According to the presence of the adaptive features in narratives, various types of life-reviewing internal dialogues were identi-fied. The validity of these types was examined by their scores on the Reminiscence Function Scale (RFS). Respondents who used the respective types were compared in terms of well-being (Mood Adjective Checklist - MAC) and meaningfulness of life (Meaning in Life Questionnaire - MLQ). Results/Discussion: The narrative analysis yielded three types of life-reviewing dialogues according to how they are elaborated and adaptive: differentiated dialogue (low adaptive), progressive dialogue, and integrated dialogue (highly adaptive). The validity of these types was sup-\nported by differences on the RFS: participants with the progressive dialogue reported more frequent reminiscence activities to resolve past conflicts and to reconstruct their identity. As hy-\npothesized, scores indicating successful aging on the scales MAC and MLQ were higher in respondents with the integrated life-reviewing dialogue.
Life perspectives of clients from the Institutional Treatment Institut.

This diploma thesis deals with life perspective problems of clients in Institutional Treatment Institut that are captured in their several personal narratives and subsequently processed by the method of narrative analysis. The diploma thesis is focused on the partial, lively, personal, unique and subjective experience of the clients in the Institutional Treatment Institut, aiming to understand their lives within contextual connections and to reflect their future life perspectives. The thesis has a theoretical-application character. The attention of the theoretical part is paid to problems of behavioral and emotional disorders, their classifications, causes and other contexts, as well as the topic of prevention and therapy of behavioral and emotional disorders, with the greatest attention being paid to institutional education. The author is also interested in the period of adolescence. The empirical part focuses on mapping the links between the experience of staying in the Institutional Treatment Institut and the current view of the own particular life perspectives of the survey participants, wheras among other things, the protagonist's changes in attitudes about education as a life value over time are accentuated. Reflection on British invasion in Iraq 2003

The thesis deals with the British intervention in Iraq 2003 and its representation in the memoirs of four prominent representatives of Great Britain. These include Prime Minister Tony Blair, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short, and Robin Cook, Leader of the House of Commons. The text is an analysis of the memoirs of the above- mentioned persons and a description of the events that immediately led to military intervention in Iraq, as well as capturing the time of the next few weeks. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the actors cope with the events of 2002 and 2003, how their approach differs. The first part of the text is a theoretical-methodological definition, there are the specifics of memoir literature and approaches to it. The second part is a brief factual summary of those events. The third part is a memory analysis that helps readers to answer the research question.
