Sehnalová, Anna ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the influence of media ownership on media depiction of anti-government protests in 2019 organized by a civic organization Milion Chvilek (Million Moments for Democracy) in daily newspapers Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny through a comparative content analysis. Lidové noviny is a part of MAFRA media group owned by current Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš with his ownership share placed in a trust managed by his wife and other close associates. Daily newsprint and other publications in this media group found themselves in a situation where they had to report about protests focused on their de facto owner. A public debate centered around Andrej Babiš's possible conflict of interest has been ongoing since his entry into politics. Babiš's strong position in the media industry is one of the debate's focal points. According to his critics, this position could enable him to manipulate public mood which would provide him with an unfair advantage in the political arena. On a selected sample of articles about 2019 protests published in the above-mentioned newspapers, this media analysis strives to unveil to what extent the coverage, tone and space for commentaries from politicians and other public actors in Lidové noviny differ from Hospodářské noviny, which is deemed most...
Trump vs. Babiš: Comparative case study of populist leadership, communication, and party politics in the post-Gutenberg era
Húsková, Eva ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
The main purpose of this master thesis is to examine the concept of populism in the post- Gutenberg era. The research stems from a premise that the evolution of the political milieu and change of the media landscape implies a need for a different approach to analyzing populism. The decline of traditional political parties, the disappearance of political cleavages, and the personalization of politics precipitate the need to re-evaluate the debate about the right definition of populism. Based on a comparative case study of two leaders - Andrej Babiš and Donald Trump, this thesis examines how various theories of populism explain their behavior and tries to determine the most suitable option. Three definitions of populism are studied - populism as an ideology, populism as a discourse, and populism as a political style. While comparing political programs, discourse, and marketing strategies of both candidates, this thesis offers a complex insight into political campaigning on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, this research discusses the relationship between the concept of populism and personalized politics. These two concepts form a personalized leadership where the combination of populism and personality traits of the leader might influence the political programs, discourse, and marketing...
Receiving information about politics and public events in filter bubbles in the Facebook environment
Halaštová, Eliška ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Mitrenga, David (referee)
This thesis describes the acceptance of information about politics and public life in filtered bubbles through Facebook. It tries to show the new phenomenon of filtered bubbles, which may have an impact on the quality of the information awareness of the general citizenry. Considering that theories of representative democracy usually describe well-informed citizens as one of the conditions of a functional democracy, the thesis considers whether or not informational isolation caused by the bubbles may have an impact on the quality of democracy in a given country. It goes on to describe how the Facebook algorithm helps to informationally isolate users in two distinct groups - fans and opponents of the Czech Prime Minister, Andrej Babiš. It shows the difference in the reception of information in different informational bubbles. A content analysis of posts in both Facebook groups, paired with an analysis of interviews with participants, shows that opinion groups differ in their reception of information, meaning that they also differ in the diversity of information received, the quality of info, the trust in public service media and a willingness to discuss. Conversely, common themes in reception of information include a growth in the importance of Facebook as a media source, a transition from active searches for...

Babiš vs. Bakala. Comparison of the Media Image of Zdeněk Bakala in the MF Dnes, Hospodářské noviny and Právo Dailies
Trojanová, Tereza ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the media image of the influential Czech businessman Zdenek Bakala who is also the owner of the company Economia, publisher of Hospodarske noviny. Bakala is a member of a small group of Czech billionaires who have completely taken control over the most important media groups and thus all national dailies over the last decade. Politician Andrej Babis is also concidered as one of them. His entry into the media market after the acquisition of the Mafra was the most significant moment for the rise of the so-called oligarchization of domestic media. Czech media ownership changes have raised suspicions that these modern media magnates have acquired the media in order to defend their economic and political interests. There are concerns mainly because they could influence the content of the media and thus disrupt editorial freedom and jeopardize the functioning of the entire media system. They can also use their media power to influence public opinion, which is largely shaped by the media. This thesis will therefore want to verify whether the owners use their influence in their media. This assumption will be demonstrated on the analysis of Zdenek Bakala's media image. Firstly, the research examines the way his own Hospodarske noviny informed about him and finds...
