Czech and Slovak Contact Lexical Phenomena in Their Metalanguage Reflection (text corpus-based)

The present work focuses on metalanguage comments in Slovak and Czech texts. The comments occur together with contact-induced phenomena employed by both languages and can be identified in text fragments, such as Áno, taký som aj ostanem, lebo vraj starého psa novým kouskúm nenaučíš - ako hovoria bratia Česi / Nebyl jsem schopen jídla, ale lemtal jsem vodu "ani ťava", jak říkají bratia Slováci. The given issue is presented in the context of research focusing on the non-theoretic (folk, naive) metalinguistic reflection. The usage of metalanguage comments, accompanying deliberately contact-induced phenomena, is a testament to the existence of the Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech language contact and it clearly shows how Slovak and Czech language users intentionally employ words, multi-word units, idioms and other linguistic devices from the other language to fulfill their communicative intention. By using the contact-induced phenomena from the closely related language the speaker can achieve various communicativ e goals and effects including actualization and refreshing of his or her utterance, being more expressive and filling in subjectively perceived intro-linguistic lacuna. Sports as a subject matter in contemporary Czech drama

Theater and radio plays and productions with sports as their subject matter offer a new thematic area in the history of Czech drama and theater. The authors of these texts are above all Petr Kolečko and David Drábek. They select primarily popular sports (football, hockey, tennis, skiing, track and field) and their world-famous representatives (J. Jágr, R. Federer, R. Nadal, H. Fibingerová). The dramatic picture of sports and of athletes is not one of adoration, but rather, a critical one bordering on caricature. The language of athletes, fans, and functionaries (see for example the text by P. Čtvrtníček entitled “Ivánku, kamaráde, můžeš mluvit?” [Ivánek, my friend, can you talk?]) is full of non-standard expressions, Common Czech and sports slang, as well as expressives and vulgarisms.

Discourse Relations in Czech

This doctoral thesis is devoted to linguistic analysis of discourse relations as one of the aspects of discourse coherence. Discourse relations are semantic relations holding between propositions in a discourse (discourse arguments). The aim of the thesis is a complex description of discourse relations in Czech and its application in an annotation scheme in the Prague Dependency Treebank. The thesis is divided into three parts: The first one is focused on the theoretical description of discourse relations and on analysis of adequacy of various methodological concepts in corpus processing. The second part describes in detail the proposed scheme for the annotation of discourse relations and the process of the corpus build- up including the evaluation of consistency of the annotated data. Finally, in the last part of the thesis, we address some problematic issues arisen with the employment the proposed scheme and look for their possible solutions.

The Current Shape of the Administrative Style (Represented by Language Analysis of Citizens' Notices to an Office)

Bachelor Thesis Magda Melichová, The Current Shape of the Administrative Style Abstract (in English) The bachelor thesis is trying to describe current shape of administrative style by analysing official notices from citizens to Tax Administration of the Czech Republic. With a support of principal stylistic works the thesis analyses collected texts mainly from the point of view of meeting the standards of administrative style. The thesis overlooks the extent of application of features and tools typical for this style, and searches for explanation of deviations and language defects. The thesis goes methodically from a formal shape of the analysed texts through a syntactic and lexical level to a morphological level of the analysed texts. The thesis maps the most common deviations and mistakes most reliable for potential misunderstanding of the texts.

Old Czech Glosses in Medieval Hebrew Rabbinic Writings

of the dissertation Lenka Uličná This study aims to present and interpret the Old Czech (so-called Canaanic) glosses preserved in medieval Hebrew rabbinic writings Arugath ha-bosem by Abraham ben Azriel, Or zarua by Isaac ben Moses and in the commentary to the Mahzor Nuremberg. So far, linguistic analyses of this language material have been based on the editions. The present work analyzes manuscript versions of the glosses and significantly refines the research. We consider the so-called Canaanic glosses primarily as a sociolinguistic subject and this attitude influenced the selection of methods used in this study. Due to the character of the language material, we had to combine the sociolinguistic methods with methods of contrastive linguistics, paleographic methods and analytical methods of diachronic linguistics. The results of this analysis are presented in dictionary entries and they provide a basis for the following characterization of the so-called Canaanic language and its position towards the so-called Jewish languages on the one hand and towards the Czech language of the Christian majority, on the other. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výukovými programy a didaktickými počítačovými hrami pro děti předškolního věku. Teoretická část definuje počítačové hry a výukové programy, řeší jejich dostupnost, rating a evaluaci jak v ČR, tak ve světě. V praktické části stanovuji svá vlastní kritéria pro evaluaci a ověřuji je pomocí pozorování. V závěru výzkumu se zabývám použitelností těchto kritérií, doporučením pro mateřské školy a hygienou práce na počítači.

The Pragmalinguistic analysis of Czech and French commentary

In the center of interest of this dissertation called The Pragmalinguistic analysis of Czech and French commentary lies in the qualitative methodological approach to a specific media communication form - a printed commentary. The dissertation has several objectives: firstly, it describes the methodological tools used in the francophone analysis of discourse which are consequently used to construct the author's own system as a basis for the analysis. The author has chosen the tools which create language subjectivity and manifestation of the author in the text which are in francophone areas traditionally called as a complex of "énonciation": discourse/history (É. Benveniste), "théorie des blocs sémantiques", polyphony and intertextuality, metaphors, modalisators, deictics, connectors. In the second part of the dissertation, the author uses the theoretical basis built in the first part and applies it to create her own analysis, comparison and final evaluation of two journalistic texts - one from Le Monde and the other one from Hospodářské noviny. Proper Names as a Potential Indicator of "Strangeness" in Translation of Non-literary Texts

The subject of this thesis is proper names in Czech and Spanish language and proper names in translation from Spanish into Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis comprises of an overview of the current state of investigation in the field both in Czech and in Spanish. In Czech linguistics, onomastics is a comparatively developed discipline. In Spanish, it is mostly grammatical manuals that deal with proper names. In both languages, authors tend to agree on the definition and classification of proper names into anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms; however, Spanish authors usually do not separate chrematonyms as a category under such name. Furthermore, nobody has yet defined or classified the functions of proper names in Spanish language (an action which has already been done for the Czech language). Opinions on the translation of proper names differ to a large degree. Authors recognize proper names as polyfunctional units and agree that their translation (or non-translation) is in large measure conditioned by norms and specific historically conditioned conventions; by the function of the text, text type and genre; by the relationship of the working languages and so on. The Dynamics of the Borrowed Vocabulary of Modern Mongolian

The aim of the work is to describe, based on material of contemporary Mongolian language, the acceptance of foreign words into the contemporary Mongolian language and particular aspects of their adaptation as a dynamic and constantly developing process, in which, apart from regularities stemming from the nature of the predominantly recipient language, as well as the source language, the complex of non-linguistic factors plays an important role. The loanwords that were received into the Mongolian language during the period of close relations between Mongolia and Russia or the Soviet Union and in the period following the fall of the communist regime up to the present day are examined from the phonetic, morphological, semantic, lexical, and spelling points of views, all with respect to diachrony and synchrony. The aim is also to put the borrowing and presence of loanwords in the Mongolian language into a broader historic and social context and to characterise the current attitude of Mongolians to loanwords and to certain phenomena related to the loanwords.

This thesis deals with the complex characteristics of communication that occurred on the webpages of the discount servers during Fall 2011 - Spring 2012 capturing specific combination of both, professional and word-of-mouth, advertising styles. Advertising texts produced by the advertising agent could be described as informative and persuasive with entertaining elements of gameplay and humor. Informative function is being realized by means of professional style (e.g. using words of foreign origin) associated with seriousness and literary expression, and by means of preparing different forms of advertising texts and publicity on the Internet. Realization of persuasive function happens through informal and direct communication using salutations, imperatives, emoticons, slang and domesticized terminology of foreign origin, and through presence of Czech spoken speech in these texts. Dialogue between agents and customers occurs in corresponding internet forums that is certain mixture of correct and neutral opinion on one hand and manipulative, exaggerated, emotional and often ungrammatical expressions on the other hand.
