Queer journalists in the Czech media space
Jezberová, Gabriela ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the feelings of queer journalists in the Czech media space. The author interviewed 13 queer journalists from different types of media. The theoretical framework of this thesis is identity theory, feminism, liberalism, conservatism and queer theory. The research is designed to be qualitative, drawing on grounded theory practices to analyse how queer journalists' sexual orientation or gender identity affects their journalistic work through open, axial and selective coding. It answers how these journalists perceive the atmosphere in the newsroom, whether there are any barriers that make their work difficult, and what coping mechanisms they use to help them deal with stressful situations caused by their orientation or identity. The analysis also focuses on their perceptions of gender and sexual diversity in newsrooms, how their queer identity is reflected in the treatment of media topics, how they perceive the treatment of queer topics in the Czech Republic, or whether any obstacles arise in their fieldwork. In total, thanks to the three-level coding, it was possible to identify four categories that shield specific categories and encompass several problematic aspects. Thus, the basic themes are the field and newsroom environment, the impact of queer identity on media...

Libayová, Barbora ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The political situation in Slovakia has undergone several significant changes since the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak in 2018. In a short period of time, there was the resignation of the long- time Prime Minister Robert Fico, the split of the Smer-SD party, the election of the former opposition government headed by Igor Matovič, which was marked not only by the pandemic and the beginning of the war in Ukraine, but also by chaos, until its fall and the establishment of the government of experts. This led Slovakia to early parliamentary elections in 2023, which to a large extent polarized society. This thesis is therefore devoted to the media image of these elections in four Czech media, idnes.cz, aktualne.cz, echo24.cz and denikn.cz, which reported on the event in considerable detail. It provides a detailed description of the political situation, changes in the party system and post-election events from the murder to the post-election period. Using a quantitative content analysis, it answers the questions of coverage and representation of political parties in the Czech media, where the Smer party was represented to up to 50 percent, and in a qualitative framing analysis it describes the most frequently occurring contexts in which the media reported on the topic, pointing out the frequent...

Hávová, Kristýna ; Malý, Radek (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This thesis deals with Milan Kundera's novel Ignorance and its Czech and French media response and critical reception. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical anchor for the analyzed texts. Therefore, it first defines the terms literary criticism and review, then offers a biographical context of Milan Kundera's work, which is divided into Czech, French and later period in the new millennium, and also introduces and interprets the book Ignorance. Then, through the characterization of the French and Czech media, divided into cultural and literary, news and opinion, and in the case of the French ones, also regional media, on which the examined response is based, it moves on to the analysis of the texts. The thesis aims to map, analyze, evaluate and compare the media-critical reception of the novel in the Czech Republic and France. The main questions the thesis seeks to answer are therefore: How is the novel Ignorance perceived and evaluated by French and Czech critics? In what aspects do the responses differ or coincide in both countries? Since the book, although written in French, was first published in Spain in 2000, then in France three years later in the spring of 2003, and in Czech translation only at the end of 2021, attention will also be paid to the possible influence that the time...

Subsequently, the theoretical part presents the specifics of science popularisation itself, including its basic formats available within the theory. The theoretical part is followed by the methodology, which presents the way in which the categories of formats are constructed and how they are analysed for the main test. Prior to this, a pilot test is included to verify the correctness of the category settings, the selected sets of scientific topics and sufficient data saturation in four selected Czech media with popularization themes. Within the main test, 612 media outputs were analysed and the results of the analysis are subsequently presented in frequency tables. The output of the thesis is an overview of media formats used in the Czech media landscape presented on the basis of the compiled categorization. In the discussion part of the thesis, the findings are placed in the further context of the theoretical part of the thesis and possible recommendations for improving the effectiveness of popularisation of scientific topics are presented.
Politicization of WHO during COVID-19 pandemic in Czech media
Hrebenár, Petr ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Stauber, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor thesis delves into the portrayal of the World Health Organization (WHO) by Czech media during the critical period of the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to understand the nature of media coverage and its implications on public perception. The study examines whether individuals with lower socio-economic status and educational levels are predisposed to engage with media that casts the WHO in a negative light. Utilizing a dataset from the Newton Media database, the thesis employs quantitative analysis to assess the sentiment of media coverage and consumption patterns across different demographic groups in Czechia. Through rigorous statistical testing, the research reveals significant correlations between socio- economic and educational demographics with preferences for negative media portrayals of the WHO, aligning with the theory that such groups may be more skeptical of international cooperation. This investigation contributes to the academic discourse on the media's role in shaping public opinion during global health crises and offers insights into the socio-political dynamics that influence media consumption.

Lacina, Jiří ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on the image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Czech media, specifically on the presence of bias in news coverage. The thesis examines what, if any, elements of media bias are present in Czech media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The theoretical part of the thesis describes bias and related concepts, and then discusses the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including a closer look at Czech- Israeli and Czech-Palestinian relations. The thesis then presents selected foreign and Czech research that examines the media portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As a method, the thesis uses quantitative content analysis and analyses news articles published in the five most read online media during Israel-Palestine crisis in May 2021. The analysis focuses on the presence of contextual information about the conflict, the labelling of actions, actors and territories, and the way in which victims are reported. The results show the picture of the conflict presented by the Czech media is incomplete and distorted from different perspectives. However, the results do not show that the coverage is clearly biased in favour of (or against) the Israeli or Palestinian side.

This includes survivors, relatives of survivors, those who are sensitive to the topic, and those who are skeptical or have a negative view towards the portrayal of sexual violence as a topic. The theoretical framework for this thesis is gender theory and cultural studies, specifically interpretive communities, which examine how the media influences our perceptions of gender and society. The research is qualitative and uses grounded theory practices, which involves open and axial coding to analyze how people with different experiences and attitudes towards sexual and gender-based violence perceive the way Czech media portrays the topic. This includes evaluating the portrayal, the emotions it evokes, and suggesting possible changes. Using the vignette technique, specific examples of media content on the topic of sexual violence are analyzed, and specific changes and adjustments are suggested. Through coding and the vignette technique, four main problematic phenomena related to czech media portrayals of sexual violence were identified. These include inappropriate portrayals of victims and perpetrators, inadequate use of...

It also balances six selected relevant websites with a sports theme (iSport.cz, iDNES.cz, Sport.cz, SeznamZprávy.cz, Deník.cz a ČeskáTelevize.cz) against each other. Additionally, it examines the only Czech sports newspaper Deník Sport. The thesis is supplemented by an interview with a representative of its editors, who reported on the event directly from the venue.
