"Party of the Democratic Revolution" - the upholder of the revolutionary tradition
Gebert, Jan ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Nálevka, Vladimír (referee)
At the very beginning was my indignation. The electoral campaign in Czech Republic in 2002 provoked me to explore the use of history in the political process. The elections took place right before the entrance of the Czech Republic to the European Union and several political actors took the occasion to philosophy about the threatened Czech identity, trying to "speak for the nation" (it means for the community according to most criterions I belong to), yet I could not identify with those self- appointed "speakers" of the nation or those who promised to protect it. Analyzing the electoral campaign of my country I realized that the politicians seldom hesitate to use historical references for their particular goals, so they can present their political agenda as a part of a broader ideology, some existing tradition or in extreme cases, try to present themselves as the only real inheritors of these traditions or as self- styled guardians of the nation. Watching historians as they give in the media academic backups to politicians that tried to use nationalism as a political instrument, I felt something was going wrong. I experienced how the past was (ab)used to affect my life and being a history student I desired to get to the bottom of the fact that it is mostly a politician who provokes such nationalistic frenzy...

Issues of structure Det + N1N2 in contemporary Portuguese
Matějovicová, Jitka ; Tláskal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Jindrová, Jaroslava (referee)
The aim ofthis work is to divide and analyse the structure Det + N1N2 in contemporary Portuguese. Hence we deal with expressions consisting oftwo side-byside substantives, which are not connected by preposition (cf. a palavra-chave, o navioescola, o Estado-nar;ďo ou o cantor/poeta; o Prémio Nobel). These structures are relatively frequent in spoken as well as in written language and they contribute considerably to the enrichment ofvocabulary. We can consider them as compounds or simple nominal groups, sometimes they are analysed within the framework of transposition. Authors, who apply themselves to the issue of compounds, usually deal with the distinction between compounds and simple nominal groups and with creation of criteria for their typology and c1assification. Those who study the structure in terms of transposition focus on transition of expression in the N2 position from the c1ass of substantives to the c1ass of adjectives. Generally we can say that iťs possible to find several theoretical attitudes, which blend together in some aspects and differ in others. Thaťs why we introduce in the first part different conceptions of the structure Det + N1N2 in contemporary Portuguese. In addition to the work ofPortuguese linguists we also take into consideration works ofFrench and Czech experts. In the...

Portrayal of war prisoners in american media after the election of Barack Obama
Jelínek, Jiří ; Kruml, Milan (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The US attitude towards the prisoners of war, more accurately its media portrayal, is the main theme of this bachelor thesis. The main goal of this thesis is to find out whether this attitude in real situation corresponds with the similar attitude in the US movies and series. The real one has been changing significantly since 2001 depending on the Afghanistan and Iraq situation, and also on the decisions of the Supreme Court of the US and the people opinion. This thesis is based on official documents of the US administration as well as on several movies (24, Homeland, Zero Dark Thirty and Ghosts of Abu Ghraib). The essential thesis whether the real attitude was reflected in the movies was generally confirmed, however the differences between pictures were considerable, therefore the overall generalization is not possible.
