Analysis of the Czech and American News Coverage of the 2008 Presidential Elections in the U.S. and American President

The diploma thesis "Analysis of the Czech and American News Coverage of the 2008 Presidential Elections in the U.S. and American President" examined if American press, represented by The New Your Times, is influencing the coverage of presidential candidates in Czech press, which is represented by Mladá fronta DNES and Hospodářské noviny. The examination is based on the example of presidential race in 2008 in USA. The aim of the research is if there are signs of international two-step flow in Czech press. The second part of the research is focused on so called honeymoon effect in Czech press on the example of news Coverage of President Barack Obama in his first term in office. The quantitative content analysis showed that there are similar features in the coverage of presidential race in Czech and American press. The investigation also showed that Czech press is more positive in the coverage of Barrack Obama at the beginning of his first term in office and this positivity declined in the second year.

Contemporary news coverage of Radio Impuls and Radiožurnál (Comparative study)

This bachelor thesis compares news coverage of two of the most significant radio stations in the Czech Republic. The first one is Radiožurnál, the main radio station of public radio Czech radio. Radiožurnál combine spoken word and music. The second one is Rádio Impuls, the most listened radio station in the Czech Republic. Rádio Impuls combine spoken word and music, as well. In the first part of the thesis, the author describes the development of both stations in the Czech radio market and their current news coverage from theoretic point of view. The author also made interviews with editors in chief of both stations. The second, practical part is the analysis of news coverage from three different angles - thematic, genre and language during one week in the September 2015 and one week in the January 2016. The main analysis is the thematic one and comparison of news coverage in the same topics. Results of individual analysis are completed by statistics and processed in the end of every chapter. Viewers as a source of information for news stations

Viewers and other recipients are in the center of attention of all media platforms. The environment is constantly developing and consumers of media content are developing with it. They are much more involved in the process of creation of content, which they now not only change and edit, but create as well. The borderline between author and public is gradually fading. Technological convergence, which gives the public new opportunities, creates a new type of recipient. Prosumer, mix between producer and consumer, defines the directions of media activity all around the world. Public has decided to take advantage of the opportunities and power of internet and developed from simple consumers to full-bodied creators of content.

Children news coverage as a means of television education

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate on news broadcasting of the children's TV station ČT Déčko and whether this source information is suitable for their moral, physical and mental development. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the impact of television in general, or more specifically, the impact of news broadcasting (dedicated primarily to adult audience) on children. The thesis describes objectives, ideas and focus of the newly established children's TV station, with news TV show "Zprávičky", being the focal point, as a sort of media tool of education. In the practical part the thesis seeks answer to the question whether this kind of broadcasting is hitting the set target and if it follows the right path. This bachelor thesis is based on a closed cooperation with ČT Déčko TV station and after its finalization it will be at a disposal of its creative directors as a supplementary material. Economic Crisis: Media Representation and Public Opinion

This thesis deals with the current global recession, its presentation in the media, and the public opinion on the economic situation in the Czech Republic. It is based on the theory of agenda-setting. Content analysis is used to examinate the intensity of attention of two different journals paid to the subject of the recession in the observed period September 2007 - December 2011, with a special focus on December 2008. The objects of the current study are two Czech nation-wide journals: the economic newspaper Hospodářské noviny and the tabloid newspaper Blesk. The study shows that the economic journal presents the recession more intensively, from a more general point of view, and questions the causes of the recession. The tabloid concentrates on the Czech Republic, writes about the recession primarily in the context of non-economical news (especially sport), and does not use the mechanisms typical for tabloids as much as expected. A secondary analysis of the outcomes of public opinion surveys examines the readerships of these journals separately. The economic expectations of the readers of the economic journal correspond with the intensity of attention paid by this journal to the recession, but only in the first half of the analysed period. Social network sites (and new media in general) transform the relationship between professional media organizations and their audiences. My bachelor thesis "Use of social networks in improving communication with the readership on example of IHNED.cz" focuses on how the media use pages or accounts on social network websites Facebook and Twitter in order to communicate with their readership in real time. In the first, theoretical, part, I define the notion of social networks and describe the history and functioning of the most widespread social network sites, with particular emphasis on Facebook and Twitter. The basis of the thesis also touches on the description of the possibilities and mechanisms of usage of social network sites in terms of the news media. In the research segment of the thesis I examine the activity of the Czech news server IHNED.cz on social network sites Facebook and Twitter by means of quantitative analysis. The intention is to detect what content is offered to fans (followers) of IHNED.cz, whether it evokes a response in them and to what extent IHNED.cz is communicating with its readers through social network sites. The relationship between picture and text in photojournalism

This essay deals with the ethics of news photographs, specifically the relationship between an image and a text. The theoretical part summarizes the relationship between a news image and a text in general and points out the ethically problematic areas associated with it. It focuses on human perception of an image and describes the principle called Gestalt, which defines the relationship between an image and a text. It deals with the criteria by which it is possible to determine the ethics of the relationship between an image and a text and explores this relationship in terms of language. Based on the theoretical part, the author examines how the principal of changing the meaning of pictures by a text, or vice versa, is used in news photos of Mladá fronta Dnes and Hospodářské noviny, in editions of March 2011. The author then applies a created theory based on the meanings of words to specific examples and describes the ethical shortcomings of the newspaper in this area.

When the source is wrong - corrections in the czech news agency's service and on the pages of the lidové noviny newspaper

Every news medium makes mistakes. No matter if the origin of the mistake is the information source or the journalist, a trustworthy medium always notifies of the mistake and corrects it. This thesis deals with these corrections on the example of the Czech News Agency to represent the news agencies. The theoretical grounds for the thesis are: to define the demands of news coverage, to present the specifics of the news coverage by news agencies, to offer relatively complex analysis of the work with the sources of journalistic information. The application section of the thesis analyses the corrections as published in the Czech News Agency's service during the first three months of the 2011 calendar year. These corrections are categorized by several keys: by the nature of the corrected mistake, by the affiliation of the corrected mistake to the specific agency service and by the priority of the corrected mistake. The results of the analysis serve a practical purpose to journalists because they show them which type of corrections is the most common for a specific kind of the news coverage. APPLICATION OF NONLINEAR EDITING METHODS IN TELEVISION NEWSCAST

This work studies the influence that non-linear editing of visual materials and usage of digital news production system have on the final form of news programmes. I also compare these advanced technologies with the older linear editing and analog playout, illustrate it by describing the principles of both methods and explain it on a hypothetical example. Two chapters are devoted to the integration of digital archives and graphics tools. The examined period used for comparison of new and old technologies is the week from 2 to 8 April in 2010 and the same week a decade earlier. The news programme examined is Udalosti on Czech television. The aim is to point out how the technical possibilities can change the workflow and form of newscast, not just in theory but also practically.
