Work with dreams in art therapy as a way to self-knowledge

The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to present the possible use of dream work in art therapy. The emphasis is on its potential leading to deeper self-knowledge and better orientation in human life. It observes how the artistic representation of a dream enables the understanding or expansion of its content and reference to important personal topics. The theoretical part of this study deals with the dream from the perspective of historical and contemporary understanding. It introduces therapeutic approaches to dream work in the view of some authors. It also mentions the basic terms used in analytical work with dreams and further deals with working with dreams directly in art therapy. It includes procedures of projective-interventional art therapy, on which the following practical part is based. This part presents art artifacts of the participants of this study reflecting their dreams. The practical part focuses primarily on the analysis of these artifacts and offers a possible way to creatively and interpretatively work with dream images and their symbolism.

My essay deals with phenomenon of Czech folk. Emic part traces chronologically influencing aspects involving my artistic development from the viewpoint of author, listener and repressive organs. Urban music developed from the folk revival into the subversive protest song movement. Auto-ethnographic research of myself as concerned participant merges with temporary comments, opinions, photographic documentation of generational shift of sensibility. Commercialisation leads folk movement into the mainstream pop culture. Role of gens and mems, dreams, subconscious helped folk musicians survive totality regime. Czech folk is not dead. Emerges at the edge of new subgenres, exposed to commodifications of cultural industry.

Vertiginous relations in Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms and Mourning Becomes Electra

The recurrent theme of inter-human family relationships in a state of loss and decay in plays authored by Eugene O'Neill arises in part from the author's own traumatic relationship with his parents and with his brother James. Trying to deal with his torturous memories, O'Neill seeks answers through his cursed characters, who partly derive from the writer himself, yet also offer a universal portrayal of humankind as a victim of his own mental being and system. Given O'Neill's profound interest in psychoanalysis, the plays mostly take place in the life process of the individual minds of the protagonists and of the animating effect they have on others who populate the play-texts; therefore it is essential for the understanding of the play-works under critical consideration to look at the inner lives and worlds of these enigmatic characters, and to evaluate to what extent they act on their own will and where, conversely, unconscious forms of desire from other characters, memories, wishes, objects and so forth are instead determinant. André Breton and psychoanalysis

The topic of this thesis is the connection between psychoanalysis and surrealism, an important avant-garde group. The thesis focuses on selected theoretical writings of A. Breton, leader of the surrealist movement. Influence of psychic automatism on his work is being examined along the processes revealing unconsciousness in comparison with S. Freud's fundamental works. The thesis further defines how the Freudian psychoanalysis was processed in Breton's concept of surrealism and how it influenced surrealist conceptions and procedures, provided that the basic elements of inspiration are taken right from psychoanalysis. The ultimate goal of the thesis is to determine to what extent is the influence of psychoanalysis apparent in Breton's work, and where the surrealism goes beyond psychoanalysis itself.

Approaches to Dream Reality and Content of Transsexual Peoples' Dreams

The subject of this study are dreams, specifically their content in transgender people. The study asks if the content of their dreams could be interpreted in the context of their lives. It submits a summary of historical approaches to dreaming and views of the major psychological schools. The presented empirical research has a character of a triple case study while the mixed design was used and it is based on assumption of Hall's continuity hypothesis. The core of this work is use of a dream content analysis created by Hall and Van de Castle on dream series produced by one transgender FtM person in order to seek differences in many indexes from norms. Analysis revealed many differences from male norms, especially in the Familiar Setting Percent and Dead and Imaginary Percent. The quantitative part is accompanied by a qualitative content analysis which was applied to the dreams of already mentioned person and remaining two MtF participants. It showed themes related to confusion of mental and physical identity,doubts and interpersonal conflicts which are, according to the author, directly related to transsexuality. Abstract This thesis focuses on the situation of a substantial subject in the historical development of the surrealist experience and confronts it with our original postmodern interpretation of thoughts of early Marx. The surrealist consciousness is based on a dialectical opposition between rational and irrational elements of cognitive processes. André Breton apprehends this dialectics under the perspective of love life and relates it to values of love, freedom and poetry. Nevertheless, this conception changes in the immanent development of the surrealist consciousness from Breton over the work and thoughts Salvador Dalí and Mikuláš Medek to Vratislav Effenberger. Effenberger removes positive values from surrealism and puts emphasis on the critical functions of the irrational. On the psychological field, all these ideas are based on the conception of the unconscious which means there is the substantial approach in them. It deals with the contradiction between the rational evaluation of myth and its actual influence on shaping the ideas of the modern man about the world that surrounds him, and the creation of new myths in modern times. It shows the influence of myths containing archaic symbols and archetypes on the conscious and unconscious psychic processes of man and their interaction on the border of human psychology and psychology of religion. The Imagination as a Link Between Dream and Art

Where is the area, in which dream and art unite and in which they mingle situated, and, on the contrary, where is the borderline between them? What do our inner images mean for us? Is the imagination a link of artistic creation and dreaming? If we admit this, can we consider dreaming as a form of art, as an intentionally focussed activity inside us? The form of art with its proper author-recipient, with denying its servitude? Could we achieve an aesthetic attitude to a figure, to a construct, when its fundamentals cannot be revealed? Or is that consideration absolutely misled? Besides those consideration, some people confirm, that dreams are too elusive to be judged But works of art are not? And is not the solution hidden in spaces of our consciousness? The fusion of dream and art becomes the topic of the following lines.
