The Function of Speech in Husserl and Merleau-Ponty
Puc, Jan ; Novotný, Karel (advisor) ; Čapek, Jakub (referee) ; Janoušek, Hynek (referee)
The Function of Speech in Husserl and Merleau-Ponty The submitted doctoral thesis is an attempt to describe the development of the intentional function of speech in Husserl and Merleau-Ponty. The intentional function is defined as the change of expressed meaning that is engendered by the expression itself. We trace Husserl's position from the Logical Investigations and the first book of his Ideas pertaining to a pure phenomenology and to a phenomenological philosophy, where he describes speech as the non- productive mirroring of other kinds of intentionality, to the late text The Origin of Geometry, where he discerns two functions of speech: it provides thought its ideality, which is different from the ideality of species; and it provides thought its objectivity, i.e. the form of object that lasts in history as identical. In The Phenomenology of Perception, Merleau-Ponty adopts Husserl's late position with several profound modifications. The starting-point ceases to be the linguistic sign, and speech becomes a kind of gesture. As a consequence, the difference between linguistic and non-linguistic ideality disappears. Furthermore, Merleau-Ponty holds that the expression accomplishes the meaning of what it expresses. In this way, speech becomes creative and ceases to be just an empty intention of...

From Descates' Mind to Kant's Reason
Dekastello, Petr ; Hill, James (advisor) ; Palkoska, Jan (referee)
The basic subject-matter of my research is R. Descartes' Meditations On First Philosophy and I examine the term intellect and its position within the mind and its relation to thought. My work includes a study of sensation and imagination which provide the intellect with "material" to judge. The objective of my thesis is to demonstrate the role the intellect plays in terms of reason and to present an interpretation of the way in which the mind is designated in relation to reason according to Rene Descartes in his writing and in his responses to objections. The position and functions of the intellect are understood as a logical structure of mutual dependence and as the elements essential for the understanding of the human soul substance. At the end of my thesis I demonstrate that the system of reason of R. Descartes might be considered as the basis for the transcendental conception of reason in Kant's philosophy, which leads to an idealistic world conception and is founded on thinking a priori. 1 ABSTRACT The diploma thesis deals with the attitudes of university students, who will become chemistry teachers, to chemistry and their views on various areas related to chemistry. This work follows the author's bachelor thesis, in which the public's opinion to chemistry was ascertained using a questionnaire survey. In the diploma thesis we focused on finding out attitudes of a group of future chemistry teachers through interviews. The theoretical part deals with the role of chemistry in today's world, chemophobia and the topic of attitudes. The practical part is based on interviews with respondents. This part contains basic information about the research - selection and number of respondents, questions used in the interview, the procedure for data collection and data analysis. One of the key findings was that respondents often lack the perspective and vision of chemistry in context. These are important qualities and skills that a chemistry teacher should have. Furthermore, the importance of teachers in the process of forming a relationship/attitude to chemistry was confirmed - teachers with a broader perspective lead students to a positive relationship to chemistry and they are able to enthrall pupils by chemistry. Key words: chemistry, opinion, attitude, chemophobia, interview, chemistry teachers
