'But it's only a children's book' - children's literature as a vehicle of manipulative ideological dissemination

The historical era between 1850 and 1950 is known to be a turbulent period reflected not only in adult literature but also in the texts written for children. This unusually rich period in terms of political, social and ideological development certainly influenced most parts of the world. However, it was particularly important for England mainly for the transition of the Victorian era and Edwardian period to the modern history initiated by the WW I. Throughout this period many new ideologies arose and scientific discoveries were more numerous than ever. In 1859, for instance, Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published and initiated the still on-going war period between Christianity and science. At the same time, the concept of childhood started to be understood in a different way and books written for children became a common commodity converting the end of 18th century in the Golden Age of children's literature. However, according to Peter Hunt's publication Understanding Children's Literature, 'all texts are inevitably infused by ideologies'. Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914.

Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914 PhDr. Jan Kočvar My Ph.D. thesis evaluates Austro-Hungarian activities in China between 1894 and 1914, especially their political aspects. I would like to explain the nature of Austro-Hungarian contacts with China and their significance for the Dual Monarchy. The main source for my thesis was constituted by the materials in Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna. Austria-Hungary concluded diplomatic relations with China in 1869, but her position in China remained weak. After the Sino-Japanese War, the Far East became a focus of interest of the Great Powers, and in 1896 was appointed the first Austro-Hungarian Minister to China. During the Scramble for Concessions in late nineties, Austro-Hungarian navy conducted survey of Chinese littoral and contemplated an establishment of a naval base in China, but finally rejected this idea. Austro-Hungarian trade and other interests in China were too insignificant to justify such an action. The peak of Austro-Hungarian presence is connected with the Boxer Uprising of 1900. EU's Imperialism: Contemporary CSDP Missions

The thesis focuses on the contemporary CSDP missions of the European Union from the point of view of critical literatures on imperialism, state-building and capacity-building. State-building and capacity-building gradually became dominant approaches towards weak and failing states which are associated with the exercise of power and influence in the critical literature, e.g. in David Chandler on whose argument this thesis draws on. The thesis develops Chandler's argument by means of analysis of intervention practices in the selected cases.

Moral Message of Heart of Darkness from the Point of View of Its Contemporary Adaptations

This bachelor thesis compares Joseph Conrad's famous novel Heart of Darkness to its movie adaptation Apocalypse Now and to its video game adaptation Spec Ops: The Line. It is mainly focused on thematic similarities, since both adaptations are loose and modernized versions of the original story. In analyzing primarily the theme of imperialism in each of the select works, the thesis uncovers the reasons for updating the settings and plot for the adaptations. It demonstrates how the theme of imperialism is presented to new audiences and the way in which each adaptation approaches the theme. The thesis studies each concerned work from an ethical standpoint.

Foreign policy of fascist Italy

This bachelor thesis deals with Italian foreign policy in the fascist period. The main aim of thesis is to analyse Italian foreign policy during years 1922-1943 and to outline its main characteristics, motives and consequences. To fulfill this aim, the thesis concentrates on the development of the Kingdom of Italy and its foreign policy since unification until the fall of the fascist regime, including the development of the fascism as an ideology and as a regime. The pivotal part focuses on the interwar period through Italian imperialism and Italian relations with European powers, such as Great Britain and France, as well as relations with Nazi Germany.

Crisis of Empire: The Great Britain during Joseph Chamberlaine at the Turn of 19th and 20th Century

This bachelor thesis deals with the person of Joseph Chamberlain, significant radical politician of the second half of 19th Century and early 20th Century. Main task of this thesis is find out, which events formed his political development from the supporter of free trade to strict protagonist of Tariff Reform and which factors led to the failure to his tariff reform campaign. On the basis of studying especially foreign, british, literature and academic articles, I analysis the topic fixed by this bachelor thesis. The campaign for gain support to tariff reform and economic protectionism was most pronounced at the turn of 19th and 20th Century and caused a dispute in the government and also in ruling coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Unionist. A failure of this campaign was at the end of political career one of the most influental politician of viktorian age. In tariff reform he saw an opportunity how could the government financed advanced social reform and esecially chance to strengthen bounds between colonies and the mother land. He trusted that the economic ties are the most infliental ties of basis imperial federation. Manifest Destiny and Its Impact on Imperialism of the United States of America at the End of the 19th and Early 20th Century

This bachelor thesis Manifest destiny and its influence on American imperialism in the late 19th century and early 20th century, is on the foreign policy of the United States during Progressivism, an era in which the country was going through crucial internal changes. The study focuses on Presidents William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft and Woodrow Wilson. McKinley administration was included in the research since he launched the American-Spanish war and that was the beginning of a greater American involvement abroad. The work does not only analyze an impact of manifest destiny on the foreign policy of that time, it also deals with the internal crisis because it is seen as one reason why American politicians abandoned the policy of isolationism. Another important influence in American imperialism was racism. The Americans considered some nations as children who need to be raised. This issue is included in the study as well. The goal of this work is to answer the question whether manifest destiny had a greater influence on expansion than desire to find new markets for American products. Postmodern image of the world by Peter Sloterdijk

7 The abstract I consider the works of Peter Sloterdijk in my thesis. I concentrate to Sloterdijk's way of understanding of the topic cynicism in the relationship to kynicism. At first I try to describe the topic cynicism which I consider as very important to understand Sloterdijk's way of understanding of the European history in the book Falls Europa erwacht. I try to explain, how the cynicism influences various parts of life, I consider particularly the military cynicism and the cynicism of power. I consider the political and philosophical vision of Europe in the second part of the thesis because the history of Europe and its state nowadays was influenced by the cynicism very strongly. I try to explain Sloterdijk's imagination of the way out from this situation.
