Czech Film Taste in Sociological Perspective
Smoljaková, Natálie ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee)
The aim of this work is to find specific preferences of Czech film consumers. By these specific preferences it is meant the type of stories, heroes or genres which does Czech film audience prefer. The analysis is made on the most popular films (i.e. with the biggest attendance) in last twenty years using the theory of Erving Goffman, especially his concept of frame analysis. By using the terms of frame analysis the content of the selected films is compared with the same amount of the most popular films in USA. This comparison is then used to find the differences or similarities among these two different areas, but in particular it is done to underline the specifics of Czech film audience. "Representation of the environment in Russian and Czech press" This diploma thesis deals with the representation of the environment in the Russian and Czech press. For my research I chose two news weekly papers: Respekt and Argumenty a fakta issued between the years 2007-2011. Quantitative content analysis and qualitative frame analysis were used for data processing. The theoretical part describes the development of the media, their influence on society, mechanism of news construction (agenda setting, news values, objectivity, bias, access to news, work with sources), the development and state of the Czech and Russian media, concepts of nature and the development of environmental reporting. In the practical part I found out how the environment and nature are viewed and interpreted by these printed media in the content of their messages. Key words: environment; nature; media; representation; agenda-setting; content analysis; frame analysis; framing; weekly magazíne; Respekt; Argumenty a fakta
Media Picture of Volunteering: Mladá fronta DNES and Svět neziskovek in 2011
Tichotová - Fryčová, Linda ; Pospíšilová, Tereza (advisor) ; Navrátil, Jiří (referee)
The objective of this work is to survey the media picture of volunteering as provided to the public by the two Czech media - the most read quality paper in the Czech Republic Mladá fronta DNES and the professional electronic monthly Svět neziskovek. The survey consists of analysis of articles published in the respective media in 2011 for which the framing method (also called frame analysis) was used. With regard to the complexity of the phenomenon of volunteering, this work uses the theoretical concept of three paradigms (perspectives) as established by C. Rochester. These three paradigms (civil society paradigm, non-profit paradigm, volunteering as serious leisure) are identified in the articles, surveyed and mutually compared and subsequently the overall picture of volunteering as provided by the media is compiled. Quantitative evaluation of certain parameters related to volunteering within the articles (the field of voluntary activities, organizational context, age of volunteers and so forth) is also a part of this work.
Guardians of the Public Interest: Frame Delimiting of watchdog Activism in the Context of Social scientific Discourse and in the Perspective of its Representatives
Beránková, Petra Alexandra ; Frič, Pavol (advisor) ; Kotlas, Petr (referee)
The work deals with the phenomenon of so called watchdog organizations. The increasing number and influence of these organizations indicates a creation of new social movement. The authoress defines them as a type of public benefit nongovernmental organizations focused on the controlling of the public sphere or advocating and asserting a "public interest" in relation to the democratization of society. The authoress target is to understand this type of action, so she asks herself the question: Which frameworks are used by watchdog activists for the interpretation of their acting? At first there is briefly presented the concept of watchdog in the context of wider reflections of contemporary society, mainly in the context of reflexive modernity, monitory and participatory democracy and information society. Secondly there is introduced Goffman's framework analysis and the related conceptualization of framework of social movements by Benford and Snow. The authoress highlights a definition of frames as the principles of selection, emphasis and presentation about what happens, and what matters. In the next part of this work, there are presented the methodology and results of the qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews with watchdog activists. The research is settled in the area of...
Social movement Pr-choice in Ireland and Switzerland
Mužíková, Markéta ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee)
This diploma thesis entitled "Social Pro-choice movement in Ireland and Switzerland" aims to gain insight into Pro-choice organizations as a social movement in the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland. At first I tried to define what I actually mean by term "pro-choice". I also outlined some of the definitions of social movements and theories that deal with social movements and give an insight into their research. The next chapter is already devoted to the Ireland. Here I present a brief history of the republic, political system, economy, language, religion, and especially the history of the abortion law. In the next subsection about Pro-choice organizations I am writing about the creation and development of Pro-choice organizations in this country. And finally there is also the research part of this work, which is focusing on the frame analysis of the leaflets. The third chapter focuses on Switzerland. In this section are the same chapters focused on the history, politics, economics, language, religion, history, abortion law history, Pro- choice organizations history and the frame analysis. In the last chapter, I compared these two countries from the point of view of the frame analysis, their success and I could not ignore the political and cultural system. Key words: social movement, Pro-choice,...
Lone-parent families as a public policy problem: stakeholders' frame reflection and reframing
Hejzlarová, Eva ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Krebs, Vojtěch (referee) ; Matoušek, Oldřich (referee) ; Žižková, Jana (referee)
The main theme of the work is finding an answer to the question why in the past years Czech Parliament has failed to enforce measures improving the quality of life of lone-parent families, and what could be done for these measures to be adopted. Theoretical support for answering both questions is provided by a) frame analysis (Schőn and Rein), which works with the idea of conflicting frames and bridging conflicts through reframing, and b) the theory of social construction of target groups (Schneider and Ingram). Based on an analysis of stenographic minutes from proceedings dealing with the issue of non-payment of child support (in particular with proposals for the state to pay child support first and then to receive it from the obligor) and the arrangements connected to child custody (in particular the proposal to strengthen alternating custody), conflicting frames are reconstructed (in the case of non-payment, there are three conflicting frames, in the case of child custody two). These conflicting frames, or rather the fact that they are insufficiently addressed, may be the cause of the incapacity of Czech political representation to address the above agenda. An "efficient penalizing of the debtor" is described as a possible reframing of the problem in the field of non-payment of child support....
The process of framing media content on the example of domestic violence
Homolková, Dana ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Škodová, Markéta (referee)
The aim of the thesis was to find out how domestic violence was framed in the Czech printed media. The analysis was based on the findings of Robert Entman, who defined framing as selection and emphasising of certain attributes in the media (Entman, 1993). The work brought about a theoretical introduction into the concept of framing which became a part of the media studies in the last twenty years and which currently deals with all phases of media text origination and interpretation. The framing method was applied on a chosen topic of domestic violence, in connection with the new law on protection of abused people, which came into effect on January 1, 2007. Five weeklies (Blesk pro ženy, Instinkt, Květy, Reflex, Respekt) were selected for analysis and the monitored period of one calendar year from January 1, 2007, to January 1, 2008, was set. In the practical part, a qualitative analysis was carried out, determining the frames and research hypotheses for further interpretation of framing of given topic. Subsequent quantitative analysis studied the methods of article framing by individual magazines and eventual differences in the approach to this topic from the viewpoint of prevailing stereotypes associated with domestic violence. Attention was also paid to the question whether the magazines provided...

The diploma thesis "Media Image of Lobbying" focuses on the issue of the media image of lobbying and lobbyists in the newspapers Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo in the year 2008. Lobbying is an activity which the majority of population experiences through the media only. The media may thus greatly influence the way the public perceives and evaluates lobbying. The paper further deals briefly with the effect the media have on the population and with the agenda-setting concept. Then the definition of lobbying is given, as well as the reasons and conditions for its positive and negative reputation. Positive and negative functions of lobbying are pointed out and various types and forms of lobbying are presented including indirect lobbying, which is associated with PR activities. In the research part of the paper the results of the quantitative research are presented. The aim of this research was to discover the most frequent types of lobbying and lobbyists in the newspapers studied. The qualitative frame analysis then shows the ways in which lobbying and lobbyists are presented in the media. The appendix to the paper contains a codebook...
