Media image of Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar in selected press from the period of split of Czechoslovakia
Matějková, Kristýna ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
Czechoslovakia underwent a challenging transition from a communist regime to a democratic system in the 1990s. Some Slovak citizens perceived this period as their chance to seek emancipation. This desire, nourished by some political figures, started the division process of the Czechoslovak federation, which resulted in a series of bargaining between the two national prime ministers, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar. The citizens of the federation were waiting to see how their protracted meetings would unfold. And the only intermediary that could regularly bring them information, were the media. Nevertheless, through its important role of informing the public, the media also has a considerable power to influence what people consider important and what they think about. The way in which the media covered all events that led to the breakup may have had an effect on the public opinion on the existence of Czechoslovakia. This diploma thesis offers a view on how selected Czechoslovak press in 1992 portrayed the main characters of the final split of Czechoslovakia, focusing on the perception of Václav Klaus in Slovak media and Vladimír Mečiar in Czech media.

Closer characteristics of the socio-political situation with the accent on the selected cases is outlined in the introductory part of the work together with the bias issue and the concept of public service broadcasting. Bátová, Martina ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
This bachelor thesis concerns the Slovak political system under the Vladimír Mečiar's government and its influence on the foreign policy. The aim of this thesis is Mečiar's authoritarianism and to analyse if there was an impact on the inner policy as well as foreign policy. It analyses the period from the beginning of the second Mečiar's era as the prime minister in 1992 to 1998 when his third government ended. The thesis is conducted in the form of a case study. In the thesis I specifically elaborate the theory of democratic consolidation written by José Juan Linz and Alfred Stepan which focuses on the democratic consolidation of political arena; then I elaborate the Fareed Zakaria's concept of illiberal democracy and additionally I study the Guillermo O'Donnell's concept of representative democracy. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to prove the democratic deconsolidation in political arena in Slovakia and to verify the validity of the theory of defective democracy on the case of Slovakia and also to describe the Slovak political isolationism which has been in my opinion too little analysed. In the first part of the thesis I present the three theories mentioned above and their individual components. In the following empirical part these individual components are applied to specific examples...
Comparison of acceptance and ratification of Lisabon treaty in Czech republic and in Slovakia
Müller, Joseph ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The main goal of my work is to determine which factors were the most important in process of ratification of Treaty of Lisbon in Czech Republic and in Slovakia. The lenght and the complexity of ratification were quite different in both countries. My work is based on concept saying that foreign policy of Czech Republic and Slovakia was given by domestic and foreign policy factors.1 In Slovakia it was mainly the determination to change suverenistic foreign policy of former prime ministr Vladimír Mečiar. On the other hand in Czech Republic politics were convinced that Czech Republic belongs to Europe and so they can dare to criticize EU's decisions. After analysis of stances of all important political parties in both countries, I can conclude, that concept I am using, is applicable also to the process of ratification, and therefore it was also the main reasons of different lenght and complexity of ratification. 1 Petr Drulák, Michal Kořan a Jan Růžička, "Außenpolitik in Ostmitteleuropa", Osteuropa 58 (červenec 2008): 139-152.
