Independent Heroines and Their Feministic Attitudes in New York City as Depicted in the Fiction by Edith Wharton and Candace Bushnell.

Based on Wharton{\crq}s classic novels and Bushnell{\crq}s contemporary bestseller as well as on theoretical literature on feminism, research was conducted on the development of feminism in the United States and its expression through fiction. The evolution and impact of feminism on modern society created a ground for this thesis. A presentation of the status of various women in modern New York and the different means they possess and use in their fight against the still strong chauvinistic tradition of paternalism follows. The thesis then deals with the social status these women had in America between 1890s and 1920s, as well as with the status they have had in modern times. An introductory chapter dealing with history of feminism is followed by a comparative study of the fictionalized New York female characters in the past times {--} as depicted by Edith Wharton, and the present times as shown by Candace Bushnell. The thesis concludes by showing how close these authors realistically depict the changing roles and attitudes of women, especially towards men and marriage.

A case study on public diplomacy and nation branding - the Czech center in New York City

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to determine the success of the Czech Center in New York in public diplomacy and nation branding. The thesis is divided into 5 parts and a conclusion. The main objective of the thesis was to find out the mission of the Czech Center and then to follow this up with research on whether it is successful in its activities. The thesis notes the development of the Czech Centers in general and the specifics of center in New York, then discusses the economic situation. Mainly the thesis notes what the most important activities of the centre are. I worked with sources from the Czech Centrers directly (interviews with the Director General of the Czech Centres and the Director of the Czech Center in New York), as well as with professional literature or news reports. A large part of the work also consists of research. There I found out from both Czech and American respondents what they would like to see in at a Czech Center. Then, by comparing these results with other information found, I can say whether the Czech Center in New York is effective and add short recommendations for their communication.

Peggy Guggenheim in a Cultural-Political Picture of her Time

Peggy Guggenheim belongs to the essential collectible figures of the 20th century art. She has created a unique art collection during her lifetime and she has opened up new artistic movements (in particular Abstract art) by organizing exhibitions, debates and by publishing catalogues in which she participated. She was active in many art projects and she had friendship among many after-war modern artists. Her collection included front works of Cubism, Futurism, Metaphysical art, Abstract art, Surrealism and Avantgard sculpture. Peggy moved to the Venetian palace Venier dei Leoni in 1949, where she was living following thirty years. Today her extensive collection is opened to public under the patronage of Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The Diploma thesis "Peggy Guggenheim in a Cultural-Political Picture of her Time" will outline Peggy Guggenheim's life in context of emerging modern art (particularly American art) and her diverse activities which were connected with it. Furthermore it will focus on culture-political context of post-war time and finally it will evaluate her contribution to evolution of abstract art and its approach to the general public.

Literary reportage of Miroslav Holub and Jiří Mucha inspired by the travelling in the USA in 60's of 20th century

This thesis focuses on the literary reportages of Miroslav Holub and Jiří Mucha, who were inspired in their literary works by their travels in the United States during the sixties of the 20th century. The two main analysed texts are Černý a bílý New York by Jiří Mucha and Anděl na kolečkách by Miroslav Holub. The first chapter puts into context the historical and cultural characteristics of the first half of the sixties, when both reportages were published. The next chapter explains the origin and development of the literary genre of literary reportages. The next one is a biographical chapter about the authors with short examinations of their literary style. The last chapter analyses the reportages and compares the cultural and social atmosphere of the US with the situation in Czechoslovakia, which are talked about in the texts. It also compares the stylistical characteristics of the two authors. This thesis comes to the conclusion that Mucha focuses on communities, arts and the cultural scene, while Holub's focus has a wider scope incorporating also modern civilization, science and technology and also warns against the future. The author' literary styles are influenced by their life experiences and careers.

The Concept of Place in the Context of Transatlantic Transformations: Socio-Cultural Aspects of Changes in Selected Cities during the 20th Century

This thesis deals with the concept of place and its transformation in the context of transatlantic transformations that still till nowadays stood aside the interests of the professional community. Representative place in the thesis is an example of the american bar, where the institution symbolized the newly established cultural elements gradually penetrated into the whole society and to this extent it could be viewed as a passenger concept venue. The main pillar of the thesis is to take into account sociocultural, economic, demographic and political aspects of bar environment as a peculiar manifestation of transatlantic communication. The key question to the concept of place is therefore whether the European continent was in the interwar period under a wave of Americanization, which in various locations showed a totally unique way that reflected the rising standard of living, while within the United States shaped this culture again by different way. On the other side, we meet with the complicated situation in the form of "dry" America and "thirsty" of Europe, or whether it was just an extraordinary manifestation of transatlantic relations and interaction, which would have thus secondarily been demonstrated modifications to the original concept in a European environment. Bronx as the Birth Place of Hip Hop: Locality as the Key Factor of Creation of a New Subculture

The Bachelor thesis South Bronx as a cradle of hip-hip: location as a key factor for the emergence of hip-hop subculture deals with the circumstances that allowed the emergence of the hip-hop subculture in the 1970's in the Bronx. Considering the transformation that Bronx has undergone before the beginning of this decade in terms of its reconstruction and exchange of people, the thesis attempts to examine which key events have caused this transformation that in the early 1970s created a combination of factors that formed the hip-hop subculture. The aim of this work is to demonstrate how these pivotal facets of the Bronx's influenced the emergence of the hip-hop subculture and answer the question how the subculture was influenced by social environment of the Bronx.

Modern Trends of Urban Development as a Significant Component of human-security policy in urban spaces of 21st Century

The aim of this research paper is to answer the question: to what measure, from the perspective of the human security concept, do the progressive participatory- inclusive trends of urban development, built on the principle of organic thinking about city-society, represent a cheaper, efficient and long-term preventive strategies to counter violence and insecurity compared to rather traditional control-repressive reaction using security forces and whether they are universally applicable. The direction where the urban development agenda, eventually infrastructure building, will evolve has the capacity to influence everyday security and quality of life of more than half of the global population. No matter if and how the national armies are prepared, if and where can the state allocate basic energetic resources or how is the state ready to face eventual terrorist attack. Devil Guardian: The Theme of Identity in Mexican Novel on the break of the Millenium.

The theme of the dissertation submitted is the novel Devil Guardian, whose author is a Mexican writer Xavier Velasco. This dissertation is the very first theoretical work in the Czech environment, devoted to the above-mentioned piece of literature published in 2004. In a sense, Devil Guardian represents a characteristic Mexican novel of the early 21st century, combining tradition and novelty in a surprising and original manner. A significant feature of the contemporary Mexican literature is a departure from the theme of Mexicanity, generally from a programmatic indulging in so-called national literature. Velasco's novel is an exemplary, however, not only piece of literature proving that the literary break-up with Mexico is neither an exclusive nor a dominant attribute of the contemporary Mexican fiction. In Devil Guardian Velasco focuses his mind on the theme of personal and national identity, which he treats in a considerably nontraditional manner, giving an ironical turn to speak to a hypermodern girl moving in the globalized world.
