Party press and cultural policy: district of Pardubice during the normalization

This thesis gives a comprehensive picture of the press organs of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the district of Pardubice during the so-called normalization. The first chapter describes the historical contexts of this era, particularly changes in policy after the onset of Gustáv Husák at the head of the Communist Party in April 1969. With this change is related to another topic: extensive purges in the Communist Party, which took place in 1970. The second chapter focuses on changes in the media at the beginning of normalization, in particular the abolition of some periodicals and restoring censorship, and changes in the cultural field, especially strengthening the focus on the Soviet Union, the emergence of new artists' unions and various legal regulation in order to strengthen ideological supervision of the this sphere . The third and fourth sections are devoted East Bohemian press: daily newspaper Pochodeň, published in Hradec Králové, and Pardubice district newspaper Zář. It briefly describes the history of these newspapers and their effect during the Prague Spring and subsequent developments in normalization. Directing and control of regional media in Czechoslovakia in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century based on the example of media reflection of culture events in Pardubice district

This dissertation thesis addresses the history of public relations of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia in Pardubice district. It is focussed at the period of so-called normalization. Firstly, it discusses the historical context of the time for understanding the crisis of the system in 70s and 80s. The first chapters describe so-called Prague spring and military invasion in August 1968. Next chapters stress changes in politics and media after the election of Gustáv Husák to become First Secretary of the Communist Party in April, 1969. The second part of text is case study about Pardubice district. The main topic of dissertation thesis are newspaper of Pardubice district - Zář. But there are also chapters about radio, factory newspaper, regional Union of Czech Journalists or College in Pardubice and editors of student magazine. In the second part of case study attention is focussed on cultural section of newspaper Zář and its main topics - for example political anniversaries and the role of culture. In cultural section I analyze which information and how they were, or were not presented to public. Supervision and control over the media content was one of the main regime's tools to take over the culture area and its presentation.

Czechoslovak Red Citadels between Two Wars

(in English): The thesis focuses on the regional organisation of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) in the Liberec region. In the political system of interwar Czechoslovakia, KSČ was specific in that its members hailed from all local ethnic groups. It was therefore, above all, the local Germans who formed the major part of the Liberec organisation. In the 1920s in some districts within the region, KSČ received up to one third of all votes cast, while throughout the 1930s, its support diminished rapidly in favour of the Sudetendeutsche Partei (SdP). The thesis seeks to clarify the causes of this sudden drop. It identifies as one of the major factors the mutually contradictory identities which were being formed within the local branch of the movement, i.e. the communist, the German and the Czechoslovak identity. These three came into alignment, to a certain degree, only shortly before the Munich Agreement with the emergence of a communist Czechoslovak narrative established on a supraethnic basis. The study also takes note of the developments in the KSČ headquarters in Prague as these had significant impact on the peripheral Liberec organization and further places the problem within the context of the First Czechoslovak Republic and its society. Selected samizdat magazines 1980-1987

The subject of the thesis "Selected samizdat magazines 1980 - 1987 (X Desítka (Ten)/Violit and Jednou nohou (One Foot)/Revolver Revue)" is to give a picture of how these magazines were created and how they functioned in the context of the time. The first part of the thesis gives a general description of historical events, especially the period surrounding Gustáv Husák's rise to become the head of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and the start of normalisation. This change brought about issues such as political cleansing and trials and the development of opposition. The second chapter is devoted to the phenomenon of Charter 77, its origins, the response to it by the party and state apparatus and what it meant to be a Charter 77 member in everyday life. The concept of samizdat is briefly defined in chapter three. The fourth and fifth chapters deal with the magazines themselves. In the sixth chapter they are compared mainly in terms of production and distribution.

Czechoslovak Communist Party in the Period of "Normalisation"

The dissertation analyses the dynamics of the non-democratic Czechoslovak regime during the era of so-called "normalisation". Methodologically, this is a "heuristic case study", an inductive inquiry oriented on finding a new hypothesis, focused on theory building, not theory confirming. Conceptually, it follows a "pluralistic" framework, primarily using Skilling's typology of Soviet-type authoritarianism. The aim of this thesis is to answer the following question: "What mechanism in the Soviet-type authoritarian structure had to change to induce "pluralization" of the regime?" The dissertation is divided into three parts: First, I present a description of an intellectual context of the emergence of "pluralism" in the field of so called "Sovietology". Notably, I focus on the preconditions of the "rise and fall" of totalitarian theory. Employing the "building-block technique", I consider "consultative authoritarianism" in the GDR to formulate a preliminary hypothesis on the connection between degrees of pluralism and the way leaders of the Party exercised cadre policy. The second section, derived from archival research, primarily concentrates on exploring the changes in the nomenklatura system in 1960s and early 1970s. 1968 Prague Spring in Karlovy Vary through the prism of the regional newspaper Stráž míru

This bachelor thesis deals with period of Prague Spring from the standpoint of the periodical of Karlovy Vary Stráž míru. It presents a brief historical perspective on the events and the media situation in Czechoslovakia. In the first chapter there are social and international events which preceeded the Prague Spring. Attention is focused on events after the rise of Alexandr Dubček to the head of Communist Party, Akční program of Communist party and the activity of reformists. The second chapter deals with the media situation in Czechoslovakia. There are described large changes in the media sphere during the Prague Spring, especially the revocation of censorship and the development of all types of media. This chapter includes the description of legislation and international meetings, which have affected the situation in the country. At the end of the theoretical part, there is a brief description of the weekly Stráž míru. Stráž míru was a regional periodical in the district of Karlovy Vary. The third chapter has an analytical nature as individual articles are analytically discussed.
