Challenges for alternative journalism in Indonesia: A case study of Project Multatuli

From 1967 until 1998, Indonesia was under the New Order repressive regime where the media was heavily controlled by the state. After the reform, the tight control over media ended and media liberalization started, inciting media concentration, conglomeration, and commercialization. In this climate, alternative media in Indonesia has emerged to challenge the dominant narrative presented by mainstream media. Project Multatuli emerged in 2021 as the first membership-focused media in Indonesia, carrying the mission of the social movement, by introducing a new type of ethical and sustainable business model within the Indonesian market. The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges and strategies employed by Project Multatuli as well as to identify the main distinction compared to mainstream media outlets. Relying on 9 qualitative interviews and a focus group discussion consisting of 3 participants, Project Multatuli is found to fit the criteria of radical alternative media as well as public service media. Results show that challenges are structural, mostly due to the unprepared press infrastructure in the country and challenging market demography. Media representation of historical milestones and related conspiracy theories in mainstream and alternative media in Slovakia

The Diploma thesis named Media representation of selected events and related conspiracy theories in mainstream and alternative media in Slovakia is focused on media representation of historical events related to Slovak public officials, namely the death of Milan Rastislav Štefánik and the death of Alexander Dubček, which are the subject of various conspiracy theories. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on placing the phenomenon of conspiracy theories in the context of media studies, followed by the division of the Slovak media structure into mainstream and alternative based on the available sources. Last but not least, theoretical part contains overview of available information regarding selected events. Subsequently, the representation of the events in selected Slovak digital media (aktuality.sk, dennikn.sk, sme.sk, hlavnespravy.sk, kulturblog.sk, zemavek.sk) is examined using frame analysis in order to map the frames through which the events are mediated and also the identification of individual conspiracy theories related to them. Alternative media and political activism: Crooked Media's involvement in Georgia elections

Alternative media are a diverse media category, containing several different types of media organizations that in various ways position themselves against mainstream media. This study aims to explore how should alternative media be defined. Specifically, it provides a comprehensive and complex framework to distinguish them not only from mainstream media, but also from extremist, propaganda or fake news outlets. In this context, the possibility of using alternative media as tools for political activism is also explored. To effectively illustrate the use of alternative media as an activist tool, this thesis uses the American media company Crooked Media as an example. To show the audience's attitudes to partisan content, an online survey was distributed to the followers of the company. Furthermore, a content analysis of podcast episodes released by the company were analyzed to provide an overview of the specifics of politically engaged content. Lastly, this study examines the specific results of the activist initiatives initiated by the company. Islamophobia in Slovakia: fear of the unknown

The minimual amount of Muslims currently present in Slovakia are experiencing hatred towards them and Islamophobia is on the rise. Research has shown that Islamophobia is produced by prejudice and fear of the uknown. This study aims to examine factors which contribute to the negative perception of refugees in Slovakia and what contributes to the rise in Islamophobia. It builds to extend the work of other scholars which have previously looked into this issue, by testing the theory and combining numerous factors together. This study therefore asks: Do economic factors and the influence of news outlets and political parties lead to negative perceptions of Muslims and therefore support Islamophobia in Slovakia? Based on this question, primary and secondary qualitivave research was conducted to test to which extent media, politics and economic situation affect perception of refugees. Analysis of responces indicated that the biggest factors contributing to Islamophobia was prejudice conducted and spread by news oultets and politians, with economic economy playing a big role in people perceived safety of their welfare first. A motivation of the Czech alternative and revisionist media to the revisionis activity

According to the annual report of the BIS from 2017, Czech republic is a target of Russian hybrid strategy. Alternative and disinformation media can be one part of this strategy, because of their spreading of propaganda and disinformation, which jeopardize strategic interests of the Czech republic. This diploma thesis has two main aims in this framework. The first aim is a description of the czech alternative and disinformation media scene in the context of Russian hybrid strategy. The second aim is to recognize motivations, which lead to this kind of revisionist activities. The first aim is based on the analysis of particular disinformation media in the context of information about Russian hybrid strategy and Russian strategic interests. The second aim is based on semi-structured interwievs with representatives of alternative media.

An Interplay of Narratives: How Do the Czech Journalists Perceive Securitized Disinformation?

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to theoretically sound concept of Peace Journalism, which combines theoretical foundations from two spheres: conflict and peace studies and media studies. Influence of journalists as intervening force and explaining factor with regard to (violent) conflict is neglected. However, Peace Journalism is not theoretically strong and builds upon dualistic definition vis-á-vis so-called War Journalism. The concept of Peace Journalism has to overcome this delamination in order to reflect theoretical underpinnings of conflict transformation theory and conflict analysis. Moreover, Peace Journalism has to differentiate media according to an involvement of given societies in a conflict. This offers an opportunity to specifically and accurately analyse news coverage of conflicts. Case studies analysing Czech coverage of Cyprus and Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts illustrates this approach. The coverage is essentially flat, distorts a reality of the conflict, pays attention to visual and physical aspects of the conflict and closes the conflicts in arbitrary time boundaries.

Development of anarchism press in the Czech republic after 1991, A-kontra and Existence

The Diploma thesis titled 'The Development Of The Anarchist Press In The Czech Republic Since 1991' takes the examples of magazines A-kontra and Existence to examine not only anarchist media as the representatives of the alternative media, but also the anarchist movement itself and its thought foundations. It further examines the anarchist groups active on the territory of the Czech Republic since 1991 and the press published by them. The quantitative content analysis is used to further examine the anarchist media using the examples of the magazines of A-kontra and Existence, for instance in the area of topics, and to look for the common traits with alternative media.

Samizdat in the post-digital era

This dissertation examines the role of material in six selected zines from subcultural, artistic and activist circles. The work deals with printed micro media with a small reach and is based on the concepts of alternative media, gives a brief overview of theoretical perspectives on zines from subcultural studies, through fan studies and participatory culture. The thesis is critical of the concepts and calls for the enrichment of existing perspectives, mostly consolidated in old (post- marxist) materialism: specifically, for a reflection on post-digital culture and new materialism, which allows us to reconsider the role of material in the production and distribution of zines. The case study combines personal interviews and content analysis with an emphasis on material and ethnography of the spaces where zines are formed and transmitted. Based on Bourdieu's field theory, the study conceptualises the zine scene as a field of zine production and seeks to radically contextualise the traffic between bodies, spaces, paper and other materials, machines, and finally capital (economic and subcultural). Transformations of the feminist zine Bloody Mary and how it was impacted by internet

The thesis' aim is to explore the changes of the anarchofeminist zine Bloody Mary and how it was influenced by the Internet, as well as by the specific blogging platform and computer graphics software used in the zine's production. The chief sources of data used in my research are the specific issues of the zine, articles and archived documents published on the blog. Moreover, I have undertaken several interviews with the zine's authors and readers, giving me insight into the zine's production. The theoretical section of the thesis focuses on the function of zines as alternative media, as well as describing zines within the larger context of the key feminist views on the media industry and the history of independent feminist publications. The following section describes the formation of the Riot Grrrl movement, which has led the proliferation of zines within feminist discourse, as well as serving as a chief inspiration to Bloody Mary's authors. The next chapter describes the context of Czech anarchist activism and names some of the key groups such as the "Feminist Group of the 8th March" or the "Anarcho-feminist Group", which Bloody Mary's authors belonged to. Hyperlocal Media in the Czech Republic

The aim of this master's thesis is to introduce hyperlocal media in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part, the topic of hyperlocal media will be presented from the viewpoint of professional and citizen-journalism, user-generated content, participatory culture, role of watchdog and civic engagement. This thesis will also provide a definition and specification of hyperlocal media, circumstance of origin, their position, financial site and their future. Furthermore, another part of this thesis will also introduce some of the external projects, whereas the practical part will carefully examine fourteen hyperlocal media bodies in the Czech Republic; one medium of each region of the Czech Republic respectively. Specifically, the analysis is aimed towards graphical editing and thematical structure of hyperlocal media. The second practical part offers qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with the creators of the investigated hyperlocal media. The subjects of the interviews are primarily from the point of view of motivation, financial site, position and future of hyperlocal media.
