The predictive validity of the state part of the school-leaving exam and the entrance exam to the Faculty of Education, Charles University
Bartáková, Irena ; Chvál, Martin (advisor) ; Kucharská, Anna (referee) ; Michek, Stanislav (referee)
This dissertation deals with the predictive validity of the state part of the school-leaving exam and the entrance exam to the Faculty of Education, Charles University. Its purpose is to find what influence these exams have on academic performance, with the criteria being the grade point average for each year of the bachelor program, cumulative grade point average and the state final examination grade. The data set consists of students admitted for academic years 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 in the following fields: Czech language, English language and Special education. The dissertation includes also a review study giving an overview of the research on the predictive validity conducted in the Czech republic and other countries. The empirical part provides the description and comparison of the individual data sets, including results from school-leaving exam and the entrance exam, as well as university grades. As for the school-leaving exams, students pass most succesfully the English exam. When focusing on the field of study, the most successful students are those of the English language, while students of Special education have the worst grades. However, these students achieve the best results in the entrance exam and they also perform best during their university studies, which can be seen in the...
The long-term impact of energy poverty and its mitigation on educational attainment: evidence from China
Martirosyan, Yervand
Existing studies demonstrate the short-run connection between environmental conditions and academic performance. However, the long-term effects of exposure to adverse living conditions on academic achievement remain underexplored. This study investigates the long-term impact of energy poverty, and policy interventions aimed at alleviating it, on the academic performance of Chinese schoolchildren starting from infancy. It specifically utilizes the Huai River Policy, which provides free winter heating exclusively to northern regions in China but not to adjacent southern regions. My findings suggest a significant positive influence of winter heating on schoolchildren’s academic performance, with a more pronounced effect for children born during winter months. The insights gained from this research could inform policy debates to enhance educational outcomes and human well-being.\n
The impact of technology in the classroom on academic performance
Vantuchová, Kristína ; Votápková, Jana (advisor) ; Secchini, Valeria (referee)
Technology plays an important role in our lives and we cannot ignore it in the education process either. Equipment often varies among schools, complicating the issue of fairness. This bachelor thesis is trying to investi- gate the impact of technology subsidies in education in Slovakia after the year 2015. For the econometric analysis we use publicly available data pro- vided by TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) from 2019. TIMSS 2019 was administered to fourth-graders in 64 countries investigating their mathematics and science achievement and collecting con- textual questionnaires completed by students, their parents, teachers, and school principals. First, we use Difference-in-Differences method to estimate the impact of the policy on learning outcomes. We use the Czech Republic as a control group to estimate the effect of subsidies in Slovakia. According to the results of this model, subsidies caused a slight increase in the achieved score. We then apply the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to assess impact of multiple variables related to the technology. The results vary across different variables. Test anxiety in perspective of the graduation exam
Slavík, Radovan ; Valentová, Lidmila (advisor) ; Pavelková, Isabella (referee) ; Grambal, Aleš (referee)
The subject of this thesis is test anxiety in Czech secondary school students in perspective of the graduation exam and its influence over their overall academic performance in this exam. Results of a study conducted in the academic year 2017/2018 among 439 graduating secondary school students in six secondary schools in Prague is presented The aim of the study was to verify a test anxiety model based on Lazarus's transactional model of stress, Ellis's cognitive A-B-C model and other subsequent models of different authors (e.g. Hodapp and Rost). The model used in this study thus approaches test anxiety as a form of a stress reaction that consists of three successive steps: (A) activating event in the form of a test situation, (B) cognitive appraisal, and (C) emotional and behavioral consequences part of which is the academic performance. Both steps B and C further consist of a variety of unique components and outcomes. Quantitative data collected with the utilization of an extensive test battery of eight self- evaluating tests, an anamnestic questionnaire and exam results allowed for a further statistical elaboration. Multiple linear regression, Spearman correlation and factor analysis were utilized to reduce total number of variables of the original theoretical model so that it would better and...

The Impact of Student Employment on Educational Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis
Kroupová, Kateřina ; Havránek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Schwarz, Jiří (referee)
Despite the extensive body of empirical research, the discussion on whether student employment impedes or improves educational outcomes has not been resolved. Using meta-analytic methods, we conduct a quantitative review of 861 effect estimates collected from 69 studies describing the relationship between student work experience and academic performance. After outlining the theo- retical mechanisms and methodological challenges of estimating the effect, we test whether publication bias permeates the literature concerning educational implications of student employment. We find that researchers report negative estimates more often than they should. However, this negative publication bias is not present in a subset of studies controlling for the endogeneity of student decision to take up employment. Furthermore, after correcting for the negative publication bias, we find that the student employment-education relationship is close to zero. Additionally, we examine heterogeneity of the estimates using Bayesian Model Averaging. Our analysis suggests that employment intensity and controlling for student permanent characteristics are the most important factors in explaining the heterogeneity. In particular, working long hours re- sults in systematically more negative effect estimates than not working at...
