China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment in CEE Countries--Based on Gravity Analysis

Over the past decade, economic and trade co-operation between China and Central and Eastern European countries has developed at a high rate. In the year of 2022, China has developed into an important trading partner with most CEE countries in terms of the ranking and share of total trade volume. However, problems such as trade surpluses and economic downturns in the post-pandemic era have made future cooperation between China and CEE countries facing a lot of new challenges. Based on the panel data of China and 16 selected countries in Central and Eastern European region from 2012 to 2021, this paper conducts empirical analyses and uses the extended gravity model to figure out the influencing factors of China's OFDI towards CEE countries. In addition, this paper also calculates the efficiency of China's OFDI based on Stochastic Frontier Gravity Model and finally give suggestions for the future.

Dispute settlement in the international economic law - selected aspects

This thesis deals with the dispute settlement in international economic law. Specifically, it focuses on dispute settlement mechanism within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The aim of the thesis is to examine specific features and evolution of this mechanism and to look at its functioning through case analysis. As an object of the case analysis I chose to investigate cases which have been filed by or against People's Republic of China (China) since its accession in 2001. The accession of China to the WTO was entailed with some controversy and China is well known as a state which is rather not in favor of international adjudication. Therefore, I would like to discuss why this system is more appealing to China and which consequences it might have. The thesis is divided into four main parts which are further divided into chapters. The first part of the thesis explores evolution of the dispute settlement mechanism of the WTO from its predecessor GATT 1947 and outlines main features of the dispute settlement proceedings. The second and the third parts of the thesis shift focus on China and provide a basis for the case analysis in the fourth part. Discourse Analysis of Czech Media in Connestion with Concept of Surveillance Society

This thesis deals with the concept of a surveillance society in the modern world and its representation in the Czech media. It aims to deduce the discourse of the domestic media on this issue and the narratives that form it. For this purpose, James Paul Gee's method of discursive analysis originating from the linguistic tradition is chosen. In addition to the texts, the visual representations that accompany them are examined through qualitative content analysis. The conclusions of the research are compared with the findings presented in the theoretical part of the thesis. The thesis focuses on the issue of surveillance and presents the key ideas and research that have shaped the emergence of the entire field of surveillance studies. These include texts by Jeremy Bentham, Karl Marx, Max Weber and Michel Foucault. Other contemporary theorists have then drawn on these, whose research is also the focus of the thesis, and present the dominant issues and current problems related to the main theme of the thesis. Chinese and US health diplomacy as a soft power tool during Ebola and COVID-19 epidemics

This master's thesis addresses health diplomacy as a tool of 'soft power' and focuses on a comparative analysis of the health strategies of China and the United States. It examines health policy strategy as a means of influence in three selected African countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. These countries were most affected by the Ebola epidemic, and the thesis tracks how the strategies of the USA and China changed from Ebola to COVID-19 epidemic. The study employs case study methodology and assesses the nature, scope, and course of health diplomacy initiatives of both countries. The analysis is structured according to five key aspects of health diplomacy: aid and assistance, cooperation and collaboration, communication and messaging, long-term investment and partnerships, and impact and acceptance. The findings of the thesis indicate that during both epidemics, the USA provided technical expertise and financial assistance, while China focused on direct aid and infrastructure investment. Contemporary Press Coverage of Student Protests at the Tiananmen Square

This bachelor thesis aims to analyse how three newspapers, namely Rudé právo, The Guardian and The New York Times, presented the student protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. The period from 13 May 1989 to 26 June 1989 was chosen for the analysis, as it fully covers the situation preceding the massacre, the massacre of 4 June 1989 itslelf and its aftermath. In order to achieve the most accurate results, qualitative content analysis and so-called grounded theory will be used. The questions that will be answered through this thesis concern the specific aspects on which the individual newspapers placed emphasis, as well as how often the events were covered and with what temporal sequence, then which language features were used, and which reporting principles were applied within the news and journalistic texts. Based on the data collected, it was found that Rudé právo, ideologically charting communist mindset in China, held similar views to the Chinese Government, i.e. that the students attempted to overthrow the Government and the regime, and during the actual suppression of the protests, the soldiers were attacked by the students, not the other way around. This study delves into the geopolitics of buffer states, using Mongolia as a case study, providing a comprehensive analysis of its role in geopolitics. The research focuses on how Mongolia's interactions with Russia and China have shaped its pursuit of democracy. By exploring the interplay between recent and historical events, Mongolia's Third Neighbour Policy, and its extensive mineral wealth, this study offers a unique perspective on the role of buffer states in geopolitics. Employing a multidisciplinary approach that combines soft power and buffer state political theories, the research aims to dissect the complex dynamics of Mongolia's foreign policy. The central argument of this thesis is that a nation's recent past plays a crucial role in influencing its aspirations for democracy. Through examining Mongolia's historical context, this research demonstrates how experiences under Russian and Chinese influence have not only shaped the country's political landscape but have also impacted its commitment to democratic ideals. Czechia between 'the East' and 'the West': Critical geopolitics of international relations and economic flows

In this thesis, I deal with the context of international relations and economic flows of the Czechia towards the USA and China in the period 2002-2022. Using individual indicators in the field of trade, direct foreign investment, and in research and development, I examine the dependence of economic flows on foreign connections. Foreign bilateral meetings play a significant role in the subsequent reaction of the state's economy. I examine how foreign connections affect different types of economic flows, as well as their development and variability. The course of economic flows is often greatly influenced by events (such as the global financial crisis or Covid-19), which can affect the state in a number of negative consequences. However, thanks to the efforts of government representatives, diplomatic representatives and important businessman, the subsequent development of the political- economic sphere of states can lead to successful growth, using conclusions and agreements from foreign meetings or proven procedures in mutual cooperation.

Comparison of Successfulness of China's and Taiwan's Mask Diplomacy in the Case of the Czech Republic

This bachelor's thesis examines the perceptions of Chinese and Taiwanese mask diplomacy (deliveries of medical supplies and related events) in the Czech Republic. The thesis aims to answer the research question "How and why did the perception of Chinese and Taiwanese mask diplomacy differ in the Czech Republic" through the analysis and interpretation of data obtained using qualitative content analysis of articles focused on medical supply deliveries, and semi- structured interviews with selected journalists who published some of these articles. Findings from content analysis and interviews with journalists are interpreted through the theories of public diplomacy and soft power by American political scientist and international relations theorist Joseph Nye. The thesis also discusses the limitations of applying these theories to Asian countries with different political systems compared to Western countries.

Economic and Public Diplomacy of China and Taiwan in Central America

This thesis is concerned with the topic of the Sino-Taiwanese diplomatic struggle in Central America. Specifically, it analyses 4 countries, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, which abandoned their longstanding relations with Taiwan in order to establish relations with China between 2017-2023. The work aims to find out, whether the reasons for these diplomatic switches were purely economic, or if non-economic motivations played a role as well. The main analytical section of the work consists of 4 case-studies, which analyze the relevant motivations behind the switches. In conclusion, the author finds out that economic motivations played a major role in all cases. At the same time, however, there was at least one other non-economic motivation observed in every case. Specifically, in every case we can observe power related motivations aiming to maximize strategic power of the respective country and at the same time limit the influence of the US in the region. In two cases ideological motivations in the form of ideological closeness of the domestic government with the Chinese Communist Party were uncovered. Finally, in two cases motivations regarding domestic politics and election campaigns were detected.
