Architecture as an opportunity to work
Svobodová, Šárka ; Brůhová,, Klára (referee) ; Vorlík,, Petr (referee) ; Zálešák, Jan (advisor)
The dissertation focuses on the interconnectedness of architecture and visual arts in the period of 1945-1989. As the nature of the research tended to expand and its outputs were aimed both at theory (in publication outputs) and at curatorship, popularization and activism, the textual part of the dissertation is organized as a collection of published works and those accepted for publication. All five texts, provided with a common introduction and conclusion for the purposes of the dissertation, share the same overall theme and pose an identical research question – what did collaboration between women architects and women visual artists look like in the period in question? The author of the dissertation seeks answers to this question through five specific examples of creative personalities (architects Jan Dvořák and Igor Svoboda), objects (a villa with a studio by artist Imrich Vanek) and urban areas (the sports complex behind Lužánky in Brno and the Brno Reservoir). The collection of the texts then identifies and deals with current topics such as the complicated attitude of the Czech society to works created during the communist era and the related insufficient monument protection leading to an irreversible loss of material evidence of post-war architectural and artistic production in the territory of what is now the Czech Republic. The aim of the work is to point out, through concrete examples, the quality of the period production, with which the lack of protection and poor professional care by the relevant institutions is in marked contrast. Therefore, the practical outcome is a number of activities that go beyond the academic treatment of the topic. The most prominent of these include the exhibition project Rejected Heritage prepared for the Brno City Museum, the author's book of the same name and a series of accompanying public events. Popularization, media coverage and politicization of the topic, supported by expert research, are proving to be the most effective tools for saving the artistic and architectural heritage of the second half of the 20th century. The conclusion of the research is the conviction that the topic goes beyond the art history level and should be viewed from a socio-political perspective.
“Tis beautiful in the spa towns, since one finds much pleasure there for one´s health to suit one´s tastes.” The Spa Town Topos in Czech Literature in the 19th Century
Fránek, Michal
Spa towns represented a space where the middle and higher classes could take in the relaxing effects of various healing procedures but they were also important locations for making social contacts, having fun and enjoying leisurely activities not the last of which included lovers´ trysts. Our essay attempts to examine how these aspects of spa town life appeared in Czech journalism of the time (B. Němcová, J. Neruda), in literary fiction (A. V. Šmilovský, I. Klicpera, T. Nováková, F. X. Svoboda etc.) and in the opera (L. Janáček: Fate). The work also monitors how Czech and German competition and efforts to create their own, purely Czech spa town of Luhačovice, figures in literary representations.

Rilke's Novel Die Aufzeichungen des Malte Laurids Brigge in Czech Translations
Dubcová, Eliška ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with two translations of Rilke's novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. Each translation is not only conceived as a final product, but also as a communication process, influenced by a number of cultural and socio-political factors. The thesis therefore attempts to capture changes in Rilke's reception in relation to the literary paradigm and - with regards to the political situation - to the contemporary publisher policy, because during the period of socialism Rilke's work, which was highly valued in the thirties, came back into general awareness quite slowly in connection with the gradual liberation of cultural and political situation. The goal of the thesis is to map the problems of the translations' genesis with regards to the period and cultural environment and to the translators' poetic style. Part of the thesis addresses a translatological analysis, which is the base for defining both of the translators' methods.
Art and Care of Soul in Jan Patočka
Josl, Jan ; Ševčík, Miloš (advisor) ; Zátka, Vlastimil (referee) ; Frei, Jan (referee)
Summary: This work approaches Patočka's philosophy of art from the perspective of ‚care of the soul'. The first part of work describes evolution of the ‚care of the soul' in context of Patočka's philosophy of history from he 30s up to 70s. Based on this description I recognize experience of the soul as the experience of human freedom as inseparable from the ethical and methaphysical dimensions. The second part approaches art from this perspective.Patočka's intepretations of art show that Patočka saw art not only as a manifestation of human freedom, but as reflection of human position in the world and his relation to aletheia as well. However, art stays half way between myth and philosophy due to the fact, that the movement of freedom is not as absolute in art as it is in philosophy. This is evident in expressions that art takes from the fields of our emotions and experience and thus still remains for Patočka in connection with the world and our everydayness. Therefore art represents for Patočka only limited experience of the soul. It is mostly the momentum of transcendence that is important and interesting for Patočka in art, but not the results that, no matter how deep, are still insights about the things in the world. Art of the age of science and technology in the context of Jan Patočka's philosophy
Bělohradská, Anna ; Ševčík, Miloš (advisor) ; Zuska, Vlastimil (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis aims to focus primarily on the relationship of art and science in the context of Jan Patočka's art philosophy. According to Patočka's reasoning, the development of art is divided into three historical periods; older, modern and contemporary. Patočka also presents two cultural epochs. One is an artistic epoch in which religious sense and objective truth are essential to art. In the 19th century, there is a transition into an aesthetic epoch in which art is characterized by the expression of a subjective individual sense, while science excludes subjectivity and individuality. In connection with this, the dialectical relationship between art and science will be discussed. The final part of the work will focus on the analysis of Patočka's views on contemporary art, which is strongly influenced by science and technology. Key words Jan Patočka, historicity, philosophy of art, aesthetics, art, freedom, science, technology
