The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization
Herold, Miroslav ; Petráček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee) ; Royt, Jan (referee)
The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. The recatholicization of this kingdom and its associated countries enabled the growth of St John's veneration, which by the end of the 17th century had already begun to spread vigorously beyond their borders. At the beginning of the 18th century, this...

On January 6, 2022, is 200 years have passed since the birth of Heinrich Schliemann. He is called the Founder of Mycenaean archeology, archaeologist-amateur, gold digger, impostor, and even a charlatan. Schliemann was born in a small Prussian township but lived an extraordinarily bright life, the ultimate success of which was the excavations of ancient Troy and Mycenae. Heinrich Schliemann considered himself this not only fate but he felt that he was born for this purpose. Is it so? Does the "Dream of Troy" have its roots in Heinrich's childhood? Which of what Schliemann wrote about himself can be trusted, and which is deception, exaggeration, or adoption? The thesis dedicates to the historical and philological analysis of all autobiographies of Heinrich Schliemann to bring all known biographical information to a common denominator, filtering out mystifications and obvious borrowings, separating real facts from embellishments and hyperbole as well. Valentová, Veronika ; Pospíšil, Zdeněk (referee) ; Boháč, Ivo (advisor)
The task of this thesis is the concept of restoration of the castle Zdislavice and its new use as a literary hotel, focusing on the personality of a prominent Austrian writer Marie Ebner-Eschenbach, née Dubská. My goal was to find use, which could be revived and could thus be preserved for future generations. Thanks to the personality of the writer, I decided to create site devoted to literature. I designed hotel for literary enthusiasts, linguists, copywriters and professionals. But also for visitors who are interested in the person of Marie Ebner-Eschenbach. There is also a restaurant, a literary cafe with an associated museum of the writer, chapel, banquet halls with potential uses for conference and library (three libraries). Part of the area is used as a park. It is designed as an English park, but part of the area closest to the castle is designed as a French garden. The tomb of Marie Ebner-Eschenbach is near the castle and is accessible via a staircase. Connection between tomb and castle is shown in the situration plan.

Bouchalová, Kateřina ; Zamboj, Michal (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the connection between mathematics and literature, two disciplines that may seem distant from each other. The aim of this work is to analyze whether selected students are able to improve their perception of the fourth dimension with the help of the analogy introduced in an excerpt from Edwin Abbott Abbott's book called Flatland. This thesis begins by introducing firstly, the history of the fourth dimension and the way it is conceptualized, and secondly, the author and the book Flatland. The theoretical part continues by providing a description of the occurrence of analogy, literature, and the fourth dimension in the Framework Education Programme for Secondary General Education as well as other sources focused on teaching mathematics. Next, the theory of the general models introduced by Hejný is summarized, followed by the van Hiele model of geometric thinking. The theoretical part of the thesis ends with a description of our limitations regarding the representations of the fourth dimension. This first part of the work stands as the basis for the practical part of the thesis that introduces a quantitative case study which was realized in the following way. Two tests were given a week apart to the fifth-year students of a sixth-year grammar school. The aim was to...
