4 Elements

Through two textile objects, which are performatively brought and installed in Lužánky Park in Brno for the purposes of its defense, the diploma thesis 4 Elements reveals and further develops the designed reality and mythology of four colorful elements – principles – roles – identities – anti-heroic demons – avatars: #ccff00, #000000, #c0c0c0 and #cc99ff, as actors with symbolic potential, with whom it experiments as a form of visual scenario for a future LARP game. Part of the work is a circular object, which is a transport case for the second spherical object, with the fact that both of them function as interconnected works as well as independently. The circle is a camping blanket, map or gateway to the designed reality of the 4 elements, and the sphere concentrates their collage-like imaginative memetic picture medallions around its axis. Textile rhizomes or long fibers leading from both objects connect the objects with the landscape, with other planetary actors. The work is based on schools of thought such as posthumanism, new materialism, material feminism, climate crisis and post-anthropocentric contemporary philosophy or media theory and visual studies.

Modernity and the Holocaust

The diploma thesis builds on the knowledge gained during the preparation of the pre-diploma thesis in the previous semester. The main outputs for the thesis were the book Modernity and the Holocaust by the Polish sociologist Zygmund Bauman and the concept of „otherness“ defined by the architect Peter Eisenman when designing the Jewish Memorial in Berlin. On the basis of these findings, I prepared maps that dealt with otherness from the perspective of majority and minority societies and maps of the spread of the Jewish community in the city of Brno, which I subsequently based my diploma project on. The task of the diploma project is to design a Holocaust Documentation Centre in Moravia on a predetermined plot of land in Brno. A closed architectural competition was announced for this project. In the design of the above mentioned building, I try to capture the fluidity and changeability of the human community through the architectural language. I think of human society as a continuity and fluidity of individual cultures defined as minority and majority societies. Through architecture I try to express the intermingling, fluidity and instability of the hierarchy of minority and majority communities. In doing so, I create ambiguously dominant and submissive spaces. From one place a space may appear submissive, whereas from another it may appear more dominant.

Modernity and the Holocaust

The diploma thesis entitled Modernity and the Holocaust deals with the design of the Holocaust Documentation Center in Moravia. The project was preceded by an analytical part in the form of a pre-diploma project, which examined the city of Brno in connection with the issue of modernist thinking in society. The result of this theoretical work was, in addition to defining the scheme of the term "Otherness", also a map of the so-called "second" often rejected Brno. The diploma project focuses on the interconnectedness of the Holocaust and modern society. I try to find answers to the questions of this issue mainly through architecture and I apply my ideas to the design of the documentation center. Thanks to the findings from previous analyzes, the work gets to the topic of regulated and unregulated spaces, which the concept of the whole building is based on. The building is thus divided into two functional units. The lower part functions as an unregulated elemental structure, which becomes the life of the building. It interconnects individual functions and offers many possibilities of movement and division of space. This part is made of steel and, unlike the other part, looks much looser. The second part is the mass of the exhibition, which is lifted to the highest part of the object. This part is a controlled and regulated area. Thanks to its massive mass and concrete facade, it works looks hard and thus creates contrast not only in the level of operation, but also in the visual level. These parts work in a mutual relationship and thus create one unit, which is a combination of exhibition space and additional program such as a cafe, children's center, library or restaurant.

Modernity and the Holocaust

The topic of the diploma thesis Modernity and the Holocaust refers to the book of the same name by the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. In this book, Zykmund Bauman analyzes the relationship between modernist thinking and the Holocaust from a sociological perspective. In my diploma thesis I deal with the design of the Documentation Center, for which a closed architectural competition was announced in Brno. The topic is a continuation of the previous project, in which we analyzed mainly Bauman's work. These analyzes helped us to continue designing the center with a completely new perspective of thinking not only about the society, but also the architecture itself. In my project, I work with the issue of borders and barriers in connection with the division of people and spaces. I am looking for a ways of creatig the space that, by its very nature, call into question what is the real meaning of borders and barriers. In my proposal, I work with the idea of borders at different levels. As at the urban, service or material level.In my projcet I am disrupting som of the barriers and borders, I am creating new ones, but I am also reversing the relation ship between each other.

Emerging Voices: The Portrayal of Minorities in the Work of Willa Cather

The thesis seeks to explore the portrayal of the othered, marginalized individuals in the fictional work of Willa Cather. The primary focus of the text is the first-person narrative of My Ántonia (1917). Other complementary primary sources are Cather's remaining two prairie novels - O Pioneers! (1913) and The Song of the Lark (1915) - and two books of the author's later artistic creation - Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927) and Sapphira and the Slave Girl (1940). The former two books function as a preliminary mapping of Cather's concerns developed in My Ántonia, the latter two texts present Cather's later reflections of otherness. The thesis focuses on Cather's incessant examination of the workings of the white, male, heteronormative discourse in the context of modern American nationhood: by her "queer" writing, she aims to unearth and subvert the coercive social mechanisms, and give voice to those who were eclipsed from the project of the rising economic empire: ethnic others (African Americans, Native Americans, European immigrants), and gendered and sexual others (women, homosexuals and lesbians). South Africa through the eyes of travel programs of Ceska televize

The Thesis focuses on the travelling programs of the Česká televize that are describing South Africa in its medial content. The key are the means of showing and presenting to its spectators this exotic detination as a turistic target and if there is a wider context of social and political struggles provided next to the given information. Semiotic analysis was chosen for the research, where 13 episodes of the travelling documents were included. This type of analysis enabled us to focus on a large amount of the information comming from both visual and audial content of each episode. During the first phase of analysis it waas described what was included in the episode where the second step was to assign a conotative meaning to identified features. The outcome of the analysis was a creation of a few categories where a different strategy of the specific travelling programs is compared. They are for example the approach to the stereotypes, the artistic form including the choice of the program's main guide, parasocial interaction, to which extent they use the etnocentricity or the internal hypertextuality. Trasffered stigma of otherness in ethnically mixed partnerships in the Czech Republic

My diploma thesis on the basis of intersectionality analyzes the social construction of "otherness" in etnically mixed partnerships and how does it manifests and influences the self- conception of Czech women that are in the mixed relationships. Further, it analyzes how the partners "otherness" affects the position of the women in the society. In my thesis I work with the concept of transmitted stigma, because the etnical otherness is not constructed on the horizontal differences, but contains also classifing and assesing aspects, which may situate the mixed patnerships to the positions of dis/advantage. For my qualitative research I have chosen semi-structured interviews with women, that were born and live in the Czech Republic and are or was in etnically mixed relationship. Attitudes of women with borderline personality disorder to otherness

This thesis explores the attitudes of women with borderline personality disorder towards otherness. The aim of the thesis was to explore the relationship between different personality characteristics of five women diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and their attitudes towards themselves and representatives of otherness. For these purposes, the Semi- Structured Interview for Personality Functioning (STiP-5.1) assessing personal functioning in the personal and interpersonal domains and the experience sampling method (ESM) were used, through which the respondents recorded the intensity of emotions felt towards themselves and various representatives of otherness for 30 days. The data were processed qualitatively into five case studies. The results indicated significant intraindividual variability in emotions toward self and representatives of otherness. The methods could find application in the treatment process and therapy, whereby assessment of personality functioning could contribute to the overall current picture of the patient and the variability of their psychological attitudes in response to certain life events could be monitored using ESM.
