Effects of electroconvulsive therapy on cognitive functions
Kubinová, Markéta ; Šivicová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Kulišťák, Petr (referee)
(in English): Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a very effective treatment procedure for patients with severe and treatment resistant psychiatric disorders. This Thesis deals with the impact of electroconvulsive therapy on cognitive function, specified as a measurement of cognitive function after electroconvulsive therapy, focusing on the monitoring of cognitive function, eventually their deficits with the passage of time after ECT. At several time points (T1 week after ECT completion; T2: 6-8 weeks after ECT completion) from ECT completion the progression of cognitive performance of patients was repeatedly measured. Respondents were divided according to their diagnosis (mood disorders groop and schizophrenia group). The groups were compared with each other. The aim of the Thesis is the observance of the cognitive changes in patients over time after electroconvulsive therapy. In the final stage 18 subjects were submissed into the study (10 women and 8 men). In terms of diagnosis 39% were diagnosed with the disease in the ICD category F20-F29; 33% were diagnosed with mood disorders (category ICD: F30-F39) and 28% were diagnosed with F06.3 organic affective disorder. The MCCB (MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery) was chosen as a method for data scan, it has very good psychometric properties also...
Training in cognitive functions for adults with psychotic disorders
Kovaříková, Julie ; Dvořáková, Miroslava (advisor) ; Mühlpachr, Pavel (referee)
This work focuses on the training in cognitive functions for adults with psychotic disorders and it deals with this topic, also known as cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), within the framework of andragogy. The aim of this work is to examine the process of CRT for adults with psychotic disorders and the potential contributions for the participants. The first part presents the theoretical foundations related to psychotic disorders and the deficit of cognitive functions, as well as the particularities of CRT, such as different attitudes to the training, its didactic perspective and its effect. The empirical part surveys what contributions CRT had for the participants and whether it was effective. This part describes a qualitative inquiry using a data analysis based on interviews with participants in CRT for adults with psychotic disorders who underwent the training in the Green Doors facility, the Modré dveře therapeutic centre or the Psychiatric Centre Prague. The assessment of the empiric survey focuses on the recommendations that could help achieve better results in CRT and that could involve specialists from the field of adult education in the training. Keywords: training, cognitive functions, deficit, psychotic disorders, special andragog
The ACFS assessment approach and its use in different cultures
Šetková, Lucie ; Morávková Krejčová, Lenka (advisor) ; Rázgová, Lenka (referee)
This thesis deals with the assessment approach called the Application of Cognitive Functions Scale (ACFS) and the possibilities of its use in the Czech Republic and in other cultures. The theoretical part first briefly introduces the principles of dynamic testing, and then focuses on the ACFS assessment approach, the examination process and the subscales on which the child is evaluated. The thesis further analyses the possibilities of using ACFS for both diagnostic and research purposes. Last but not least, it will provide insight into several surveys from diverse cultural backgrounds made using ACFS. The thesis also includes a research proposal, which aims to verify the validity of ACFS as a tool for diagnosing school maturity.
Cognitive functioning in everyday life in patients with Borderline personality disorder
Krupníková, Hana ; Stehlík, Luděk (referee) ; Niederlová, Markéta (referee)
This thesis focuses on cognitive function in everyday life with an emotionally unstable personality disorder, border type and builds on the thesis, which was defended in 2011. The theoretical part deals with the cognitive functions that have a selective approach in terms of importance within the research project. Chapters on borderline personality disorder contain an overview of the historical development of diagnosis, the diagnosis and further elaborate on diagnostic models of Kernberg and Millon. Both studies link the topics that deal with cognitive functions in individuals with this disorder. In the empirical part, which describes the research project, approaching test methods used. We try to verify the relationship between diagnosed emotionally unstable personality disorder (IPDE questionnaire) and cognitive functions in everyday life using ANT and questionnaires MFQ, CFFQ and MIA in the research and control group. The relationship of cognitive functions and subjective measured depressive symptoms is studied using the BDI-II and MADRS. The research project is complemented by secondary analysis of our research project and Klára Patlichová research project focused on comparing the results of the attention test ANT. This thesis is enhanced by a qualitative part of case studies. Key words:...
The context of sleep deprivation in the lives of adolescents
Doležalová, Pavlína ; Niederlová, Markéta (advisor) ; Panenková, Erika (referee)
Starting point is the concept of sleep deprivation. The thesis is mainly concerned in the impact on the life of adolescents. The theoretical part of the thesis analyses results of scientific studies that dealt with the relationship between sleep deprivation and various cognitive processes, such as thinking, memory, and decision making. Thesis also includes a brief outline of sleep as an objective physiological process, further defines the definition of sleep deprivation and shortly explains the importance of adolescence. The core of the thesis is consisted of impacts, risks and practical consequences of a lack of sleep in daily functioning that is not related just to juveniles. Finally, the thesis focuses on possible ways which minimize the effects of sleep deprivation. The empirical part involves a proposal of the research design that deals with individual problem arising from the general part of the work. Keywords: Sleep, deprivation, adolescents, cognitive function
The Mapping of a Relation between Cognitive Functions and Intelligence in Persons with Schizophrenia
Šimonová, Miriama ; Kulišťák, Petr (advisor) ; Šivicová, Gabriela (referee)
Nowadays, an intelligence is a widely applied concept. The authors' opinions on its possible unification with or strict separation from the specific cognitive functions vary throughout different fields of psychology. Simultaneously, schizophrenia is a mental disorder, which is often connected to a cognitive deficit. Its assessment is usually realized on an estimation of the intelligence level. The aim was to explore how the estimation of intelligence corresponds with a cognitive profile of a patient with schizophrenia. This purpose is firstly being attained by a description of various views and theoretical objects, for instance core characteristics of a schizophrenia, a description of intelligence and selected cognitive functions. The empirical part is focused on an exploration of the relationship between a cognitive profile and the estimation of actual and premorbid intelligence of a patient with schizophrenia. A total of 120 persons with a diagnose F20 were included in this study. A cognitive profile was assessed with the usage of MATRICS battery and the intelligence levels were evaluated by selected WASI tests and Czech reading test (CRT). Results indicates that despite the level of premorbid and actual intelligence level was identified within the normal range, respondents evinced a cognitive...
Time and space perception in laboratory rats
Malenínská, Kristýna ; Stuchlík, Aleš (advisor) ; Horáček, Jiří (referee)
Time and spatial information are always two inseparable entities because if anyone moves in space it also moves in time. However, spatial orientation is much more investigated than interval timing. Time perception is for survival of the individual also very important and it probably works together with spatial perception. Despite this, only a few researches have been focused on this topic and therefore we aimed on evolving a new task which would test use of both of these informations and interaction between them. This new version of AAPA task was tested on Carousel Maze where we usually test only spatial orientation and memory. However, we added also a timing part to our version of the task because we assume that in this task when we turn off the light the rats have to use more interval timing than spatial information. Next part of the task included application of drugs which should compromise timing strategies. We have demonstrated use of different strategies when animals are in darkness and light whereby parts in light depend on spatial orientation and parts in darkness depend more on timing strategies. The drugs didn't disrupt rat's abilities which can be caused by very complex design or by inappropriately chosen doses. Key words time perception, spatial navigation, cognitive function
The selected methods of social work with clients self - non sufficient in health care facilities
Kiliánová, Hana ; Krahulcová, Beáta (advisor) ; Ondrušová, Jiřina (referee)
The main goal of the thesis entitled "The selected methods of social work with clients self-non sufficient in health care facilities" was to describe and to analyze methods used in activation of the elderly suffering from dementia. It draws a comparison of different settings and explores workers's attitude to the methods of activation. The text of the thesis was mapped out into five chapters. The first chapter was set into the context of old age and ageing. The second chapter is concerned with the issues of self-sufficiency and dependency of old age and other related issues. The topic of the third chapter is old age in relation with memory. It defines memory and memory disorders in the elderly suffering from dementia. The fourth chapter is crucial and gives an idea of non-pharmacological and other possible activities which are eligible for application in practice and are intended to reduce cognitive disorders of cognitive functions and behavior disorders. The theoretical part enters into research carried out in four facilities which care for clients with dementia. The research section is represented by a qualitative research where methods of a half structured interview and observation were opted for. The interviews were realized with eight practicing experts. The outcomes gathered from the...
The Clock Drawing Test: Normative data for Czech elderly
Mazancová, Adéla ; Kulišťák, Petr (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the topic of limited normative data and its aim is to report the norms of the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) in a large sample of cognitively healthy Czech elderly (N = 501; aged 60 to 99). The CDT is a commonly used tool for screening of cognitive functions. We worked with the following version of test: clock drawing with pre- drawn circle and time setting 13.45 using three different scoring systems (Babins, Slater, Whitehead, & Chertkow, 2008; Cohen, Ricci, Kibby, & Edmonds, 2000; Shulman, Pushkar Gold, Cohen, & Zucchero, 1993). As a result, we found a significant effect of age and education, but non-significant effect of gender on CDT performance in old age. Therefore normative data was calculated considering those two demografical variables; the tables present means, standard deviations and t-scores based on defined subgroups. The results indicate that CDT performance of cognitively healthy elderly is negatively influenced by age, while directly proportional effect of education. Moreover it seems that the range of scores of the test grows with increasing age. Data collected in this thesis may be used for a more effective and standardized interpretation of CDT performance in old age in both clinical context and research. We also confirmed high inter-rater reliability...
