Visual interpretation of literary works of Jules Verne

This master thesis called Comics Paraphrase of Jules Verne´s Original Book consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part is focused on the personality of Jules Verne, his literary works and his influence on the genre of science fiction. The thesis is also dealing with adaptations of the book Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. The final section of the theoretical part is presenting comics as an art form. The practical part consists of a realization of a set of drawings in the form of a comic book, a documentation of the drawing workflow is a part of annex I. - IV.

Using Comics to Teach Natural History

This diploma thesis aims to gather information about learning styles and opportunities for using comic when teaching science/biology. 253 teachers from all around the Czech Republic filled out a form which shows their experience, suggestions and arguments for and against using comic to teach Natural History. The respondents also answered questions about their approach to visual learners in class. The results show that science and biology teachers would be interested in getting and using some worksheets including comic in their lessons. Teachers would like to use comic mainly in the fields of Evolutionary biology, Ecology and for the topic of Photosynthesis. The creative part of this thesis works with the results of the questionnaire and presents four educational comics based on the most popular topics teachers chose. Each worksheet includes a teacher's manual and recommendations.

Media transformations of Pepina Rejholsova

The work reflects one of the most popular fictional character of the first half of the 1930s, Pepina Rejholcová. Pepina Rejholcová, whose author Frantisek Voborsky, an important personality of Czech comics, has appeared in the Czech press at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s - first as a side character of humorous drawings or illustrations for popular song lyrics. Soon after, she reappeared on the silver screen, on pages of children's books, or in children's rooms in the form of toys and sweets. The transformations of the originally illustrated archetype caused by the switch among the various media are the center of interest for this work. In this context, the aspects of intermediality and transmediality are examined, both in special and general terms. It is mainly the extent to which the originally cartoon character changes, and whether the content of the message, the narrative patterns and the concept of humor is changing as well. In broader context, the work is a contribution to the theme of media and institutional integration. The work is divided into five parts and a conclusion. Theme of growing up in modern comics

This diploma thesis with the title Theme of growing up in modern comics aims to examine the modern comics with qualitative analysis and thus to deepen the insufficient academic coverage of the given topic. The analyzed pieces of work are Locas by Jaime Hernandez, Ghost World by Daniel Clowes, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware, Oskar Ed: Můj největší sen by Branko Jelinek, Black Hole by Charles Burns, Epileptic by David B., Blankets by Craig Thompson and The Playboy by Chester Brown. The analysis itself is preceded by the part that deals with the wider context of growing up in the literature and cinematography. The chapters which deals with the specific pieces of work are divided thematically and they are always represented by the pair of authors: the theme of feminineness at Jaime Hernandez and Daniel Clowes, the dreamy landscapes and relationships with father at Chris Ware and Branko Jelinek and the sexuality and religion at Craig Thompson and Chester Brown. A chapter summarizing the response of media in the Czech background is also included. The principal aim of the thesis is to increase the coverage of theoretical material of the specific comic works and to put it into the wider artistic context.

Environmental cartoon in the Czech press

This diploma thesis is focused on the analysis of humorous environmental cartoons in specific periods during last twenty-three years. In the content and semiotic analysis, I am dealing with cartoons in its various forms in the Czech broadsheet newspapers MF Dnes, Právo, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, Deník, Lidová demokracie, Svobodné slovo and Práce. I surveyed the subtopics dominating in specific periods and the frequency of envirotoons depending on particular titles and current events in the Czech Republic. The thesis deals with these media contents also in connection with global environmental issues and their public discussion. Another important part is the reflection of social problems which the analyzed topics are closely related with. Combination of quantitative and qualitative methods enables to describe and interpret media units of content and lay the foundations for the research of environmental cartoons which has no tradition in the Czech Republic. In the thesis, I point to the fact that newspaper cartoons provide not only the relaxation and entertainment, but it is also an important medium in environmental agenda-setting and its discussion.

Image of Woman in Japanese Popular Culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century

This thesis follows my previous studies of modern Japanese society and popular culture. I will especially focus on gender stereotypes, particularly negative stereotypes concerning women who refuse to bow to a substantial pressure from society endowed with a strong Confucian tradition. It was this very tradition - together with a foreign concept akin to the Western domesticity cult - what gave rise to the ideal of "good wife, wise mother" (rjósai kenbo), which at least in some form remains quite tangible even in contemporary Japanese society. One of the tasks this thesis wants to undertake is to describe how the negative stereotyping of women who stood in either conscious or natural opposition towards this ideal affected portrayal of women in Japanese popular culture (especially comics), which can be a very good perpetuator of all kinds of stereotypes. At the same time, I would like to find out whether it managed to partially subvert at least some of the negative images of women who refused to be good wives and wise mothers.
