Lichnovský, Tomáš ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
Marek Eben is a phenomenon in the role of TV show Na plovarne presenter, which we have observed for nearly 20 years in Ceska televize's broadcast. The talk show, atypical by its form, is unique not only in terms of choice of guests, but especially by Eben's interview style. How does he present a specific group of guests who come from academic environment? And how many scientists have already visited popular "Plovarna"? The following bachelor paper answers these questions and other issues. The theoretical part is opened by explication of interview as a journalistic genre and puts stress on the area of terminology, typology and authorization. Concurrently, the author pursues the utilization of interview in different kinds of television programs and with some overlap into next chapter, containing the Na plovarne show's characteristic and Marek Eben's profile, he points out controversial aspects of designation "talk show". The practical part of the paper is based on quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis of selected show's episodes. In the last chapter, the author presents the research results concerning the rate of science popularization in the show - firstly in terms of academic guests number, secondly from the number popularized science branches point of view. He also defines Eben's...
Transformatıon of Pera into Cultural District of Istanbul in the second half of the 19th Century
Bayram, Muhammet Sami ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Martykánová, Darina (referee) ; Heltai, Gyöngyi (referee)
The second half of the 19th Century was a remarkable period in the history of the transformation of Istanbul's Pera district, which can also be detected in the history of its western type theatre buildings, passages, cultural activities, district regulations, planning and establishment of other public and private spaces. The scope of the study will focus on the period between the announcement of the Edict of Gulhane (1839) till Second Constitutional Era (1908). I have chosen the Pera district, also known as Beyoğlu/Taksim for this case study, because it had quite specific functions in the city. It had hosted various ethnical groups throughout its long history, which was also the case in the middle of the 19th century, and the cultural harmony influenced the district's social life. I intend to test this hypothesis by applying Charles Landry's creativity city concept with Pera's cultural district at the end of the thesis. I will apply the aforementioned concepts and examine the remarkable modern type constructions of the district and their history. I will show that gradual growth of the amount and intensity of interactions between the West and the Ottoman Society created a cultural infrastructure, which in turn created a cosmopolitan area in Pera. Social and daily life started to change with the...
The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.

Janoušková, Barbora ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Skalecká, Veronika (referee)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH VĚD Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky Barbora Janoušková Obraz počítače jako prostředku zábavy a komunikace v časopisech ABC a Věda a technika mládeži v letech 1980-1990 Bakalářská práce Praha 2014 Abstract The computer is a phenomenon of modern times. Nowadays, we probably can not even imagine our lives without having a one. The beginnings of computer technology dates back to the 50s of the 20th century , which is many years before our examined period . It naturally took some time to move the computer occupying a whole room to a "box" that fits on a desk. 80s of the 20th century was the era of computer technology immense development. Desktop computers slowly began appearing in ordinary households. But for the former Czechoslovakia it was also a time of political problems . How were the Czechoslovak magazines for children and youth dealing with the computer oriented themes? I will try to map the image of the computer on the example of two popular scientific periodicals of that time. In what aspects was tjhe computer presented. Was it rather a means of entertainment, or just a tool for educational purposes? Have the computer games been available? My aim is to answer these and some other questions by applying a method of the quantitative content...
'But it's only a children's book' - children's literature as a vehicle of manipulative ideological dissemination
Moravčíková, Hana ; Clark, Colin Steele (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
The historical era between 1850 and 1950 is known to be a turbulent period reflected not only in adult literature but also in the texts written for children. This unusually rich period in terms of political, social and ideological development certainly influenced most parts of the world. However, it was particularly important for England mainly for the transition of the Victorian era and Edwardian period to the modern history initiated by the WW I. Throughout this period many new ideologies arose and scientific discoveries were more numerous than ever. In 1859, for instance, Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published and initiated the still on-going war period between Christianity and science. At the same time, the concept of childhood started to be understood in a different way and books written for children became a common commodity converting the end of 18th century in the Golden Age of children's literature. However, according to Peter Hunt's publication Understanding Children's Literature, 'all texts are inevitably infused by ideologies'. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is firstly, to study the way in which ideologies are incorporated in the texts for children (overt or covert) and secondly, the extent to which the texts for children become a vehicle of...

Contemporary trends in the development of tv entertainment: tv show Prostřeno
Honsová, Pavlína ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The dissertationdeals with entertainment in contemporary Czech and foreign environments. It is composed from two parts, a theoretical and a practical one. At the beginning of the theoretical part, the theoretical foundations necessary for the essay are elaborated, in particular everyday life and the role of television in it. Furthermore, it describes several TV shows, most importantly those which are in some way related (e.g. by genre) to Prostreno, that is reality and cooking shows. It also shortly mentions similar programs in the Czech environment. The analytical part has also several chapters. Firstly, the method of analysis for Prostreno is presented. This is content analysis, which is carried out and the results are evaluated. It is then compared to the other shows mentioned above. Furthermore, the means of expression of Prostřeno are presented (editing, music…) and a summary and overall evaluation follows.
The penetration of entertainment into the news paradigm, its reflection and influence on the public sphere
Klimeš, David ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of my work is to describe the penetration of entertainment into the news and the normative reflection of this phenomenon. In the first chapter I conceptualize the phenomenon and discuss the basic literature on the topic. In the subsection I present my concept of the relationship between infotainment and other media concepts from the most general to specific ones such as infotainment. Further, I describe the Czech normative reflection on three different levels: the theoretical debate, the professional debate within political discourse (in which I also include the activity of regulatory authorities), and the debate within journalistic discourse. In the second chapter I show methodological attempts at coping with the penetration of entertainment and I suggest a methodological approach for my own research. In the third chapter I describe historically the onset of the news paradigm in the Czech media landscape, the penetration of entertaining elements into it, and the increased interpretive power of journalists in the commercialized infotainment news. After the description of the Czech normative reflection of this phenomenon and the presentation of the research, I propose a new approach to examine the fusion of entertainment and news.
Social and cultural status digital entertainment
Vnouček, Petr ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
This work uncovers perceptions of the Czech society concerning cultural and social role of a digital entertainment (computer games and videogames) as a relatively new interactive media form. The author tries to verify validity of a presumption that the digital entertainment is an object of a cultural stigma that was formed by combination of various factors which are closely specified in the work. According to the author, present perception of the digital entertaiment in society is formed by a media panic that repeated itself regularly in the course of history. Amongst other significant determinants one can find certain stereotypical viewes, efforts of a ruling class to sustain status quo and struggle of various social groups over cultural dominance which leads to hierarchization of cultural tastes. Suggested cultural stigmatisation of the digital entertainment probably leads to a social stigmatisation of players, who submit to social pressures and often adapt their behaviour to general tastes. Essential part of the work is formed by a research based on qualitative and quantitative data collected from teachers and gymnasium (high schools) and elementary school students. The research supports a presumption that the negative view on the digital entertainment is subject to specific generational...
